Cigarette Butts - From Waste to Best

Code Effort Private Limited is India's first cigarette waste recycling company. It recycles each component of cigarette waste generated either domestically or industrially and makes a range of products like paper bags, pillows, soft toys, etc. It uses each and part of cigarette butts to manufacture their products and they are expanding their range of products to make air purifier, eye wears, etc. They work closely with major cigarette companies and collect cigarette buds from various collection points (suppliers, rag pickers). Operations are in 15 states, which cover 250 districts, and collections come from Value bins (VBins), which is a registered trademark of the organization. These value bins are provided in shops and cafés to only collect cigarette buds and to collect the waste at its source. After collection, toxins are removed from the buds, then the buds are recycled.

The business also provides employment opportunities and skill development to families of nearby areas, especially women. The business has helped women become self-reliant and financially independent. Constructing Green

India produces 150 million MT of construction and demolition waste and recycles only 2% of it. This waste presents a good business opportunity, where EverEnviro comes in and is trying to bridge this gap at the same time fulfilling SDG GOAL 12: Responsible Consumption and Production and GOAL 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, by achieving environmentally sound management of Construction and demolition (C&D) waste throughout their life cycle.

This process reduces their release to air, water, and soil and minimizes their adverse impacts on human health and the environment. Waste generation is reduced through prevention, reduction, recycling, and reuse.

Preservation through management and order

The innovation is based on the development of detailed and orderly planning for the execution of activities within working hours, generating an environment of discipline, increasing efficiency, and preserving the place or area where work is done since, with the correct functioning of the operating crew, processes that can take certain hours, can be reduced in time by the quality of work and development of activities according to the planning reports, which generates less pollution, more preservation of the environment and better use of time. This last mentioned is very important considering the type of company that PEMEX is.

Sustainable consumption meets the Eco products!

During approximately two decades, people and especially the new generations have begun to become aware of the effects that we have on the planet. Conditions are generated by excessive economic growth and a linear economic model. One of the negative impacts of the environment that these practices have caused is a global problem related with solid waste management.

By 2016, according to the World Bank report 'What a Waste 2.0: a global snapshot of solid waste management up to 2050,' published in 2018, Latin America produced 231 million tons of garbage per year, while USA produced 289 million. In addition to this, by 2030, it is projected that 2.59 billion tons of garbage will be generated yearly, and by 2050 this number would increase to 3.40 billion, representing an increase of 70% in solid waste in the next 30 years.

The solid waste management constitutes a challenge for communities and the state since it is a problem that impacts healthiness, environment, and prosperity. This is stated by Ede Ijjasz-Vasquez, Senior Director of the Global Practice of Social, Urban and Rural Development, and Resilience of the World Bank “Solid waste management concerns everyone. Ensuring effective and adequate management of solid waste is crucial for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.”

The solid waste disposal that is carried out globally is as follows: 13.5% is recycled, 11% is incinerated, 5.5% is composted, while the rest goes to landfills or open dumps, corresponding to the 69.7%. The waste that is taken to a landfill represents the 36.7% only.

In Latin America, however, these numbers are somewhat different. Only 4.5% of the garbage is recycled and less than 1% is composted, meaning that 95.3% of solid waste ends up in landfills or open dumps without any type of treatment.

In this context, the circular economy becomes a necessary model to reuse or recycle the waste generated by mass consumption. According to the World Bank report, this model hopes to achieve efficiency and economic growth while minimizing impacts on the environment. This is where eco-products could become an alternative to reuse waste and turn it into new products that are useful for different sectors of the economy.

Another aspect to consider is solid waste management which is the conditions of the waste pickers. They are described as a vulnerable population, typically women, children, the elderly, the unemployed or migrants. This population works in unhealthy conditions, generally without social security and education, and as result, a lack of job opportunities.

It is in this context that Dekonciencia has set its objectives. Both in the handmade manufacture of eco-products, and in the alliance with displaced people and recyclers so that they actively participate in the manufacture of these eco-products. Dekonciencia goal is to turn them into strategic suppliers, as well as producers.

The Varden uses much less water than traditional hydroponic systems and provides infrastructural resilience to food insecurity.

Seeing Green: Making Cannabis more Accessible

Garden Remedies released a line titled “Seconds”. The line features affordable cannabis products that still have the quality and value that typically priced cannabis/cannabis products have. By repurposing the cannabis products or byproducts that are not seen as ‘aesthetically pleasing’, Garden Remedies is able to then take these products and sell them at affordable prices instead of having to waste such product. Some of the products include ‘Shake’, leftover ground flower that tends to be leftover from handling, and ‘small buds’, which are the small flowers that tend to be left out during packaging. This contributes to UN SDG #12 of sustainable consumption and production patterns.

The transformation of so-called "garbage" into life / La transformación de la mal llamada"basura" en vida.

According to figures from Colombia's National Planning Department, the country produces around 27,000 tons of solid household waste per day, with Bogotá being the city that produces the most waste (around 6,300 tons per day) and it is estimated that waste generation will grow by 20% in the next 10 years. On the other hand, in the report entitled The State of Food and Agriculture in the World 2019, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) warns that by 2050 about 90% of fertile soils could be lost, predicting an unprecedented food crisis. With this scenario in mind, Jorge Luna, together with some investors, decided to found Eko Bojacá S.A.S. E.S.P. with the purpose of collecting 120 tons of solid waste daily and transforming it into approximately 500 kg of organic fertilizer. "Our purpose is sustainability and our vehicle is the circular economy" - Jorge Luna, CEO.

Be a Shark in a world full of Fish

“There can be infinite uses of the computer and of new age technology, but if teachers themselves are not able to bring it into the classroom and make it work, then it fails.” – Nancy Kassebaum.

The world is hyped today about Electric Vehicles and various other technological advancements. People everywhere are talking about whether the world has the required infrastructure to embrace future advancements in the field of technology. However, have we taken a step back to think about who will be driving these innovations in the long run? Is the world ready to develop skills and talents that can revolutionize and materialize bookish concepts into something tangible? Movements in that direction are fundamentally more important than innovations because we need “drivers” of those innovations. “Skill Shark” is an EdTech startup based in Telangana and established in early 2020, with the aim to mold the minds of the youth towards the force that will be driving our future.
