Summary

Skylish relates to 'SDG 3 'Good health and well-being ' as it has innovated its products to provide healthy organic and nutritious meals for pet dogs

It relates to SDG 15 'Life on land' as it is encouraging poultry farmers to incubate healthy feed without the use of chemicals and pesticides thus improving the quality of the environment.

They prefer to have their packaging either of glass jars or biodegradable material over conventional plastic packaging and plastic bags. Thus it relates to SDG 12 'Responsible Consumption and Production '

Innovation

Handmade treats for dogs that are nutritious and ethically made. They are natural, safe, and, healthy.

Natural- Only fresh, locally sourced and handpicked ingredients go in treats and snacks.

Safe- Free of any salts, sugars, gluten, artificial agents, or preservatives - treats and snacks are 100% safe.

Healthy- No fillers and just ingredients that are super healthy. 100% human-grade food.

All products are handmade and made to order. All the meats in treats and snacks are free of any chemicals, antibiotics, or hormones and are procured from certified hygienic processing facilities and grass-fed goats.

The innovation idea came to Mrs Rachna Gujral after she adopted 2 puppies and was looking for nutritious treats to train them with. So she did research and came up with many DIY treats for her own dogs. After that, she shared the treats with her friends before going commercial with the product.

The founder explains the importance of the treats as follows, “We get paid in salaries, they get paid in treats, for them it's currency. For them being well trained is to be a good citizen, living among humans. So yeah, treats play a very important role when it comes to dogs.” - Rachna Gujral

Inspiration

“I was a Pet Parent. I had two puppies who were just four weeks old and just like any other mom, I wanted the best for them, wanted to make sure they are healthy, that they are well brought up and that they have the right physical, emotional and mental balance when they are growing up. So that was the motivation. Hence, I was looking for treats” – Rachna Gujral

Mrs. Rachna Gujral wanted the dog treats to train her dogs. She doesn’t like people using fear and punishment to train their dogs. Bonding with pets and with your companion animals is something that she believes in.

Food is the biggest motivator for dogs and the dogs see the treats as a reward, so using these treats was one of the best ways to motivate the dogs.

Overall impact

Our client Skylish is an organization that serves the pet dogs community by serving customers the treats and food items required for the healthy growth of the pet. The initiative that makes them different from other organizations is that they prefer to have their packaging either of glass jars or biodegradable material over conventional plastic packaging and plastic bags. Even though having the glass packaging adds to the freight costs, causing breakages and damages.

They prefer to redeliver the parcel or to pay a refund rather than using nonbiodegradable packaging and harming the environment. While other brands use bubble wrap while claiming to be eco-friendly but Skylish does not even use bubble wrap. Even though they have a small layer of plastic coating which helps in preventing the spillage of food ingredients, it still qualifies as partially biodegradable packaging. The organization prefers to use zip-lock bags over the cartons. Ziplock bags usually are reusable whereas the cartons once used cannot be reused. This increases the recycling cost.

Business benefit

“When we moved to commercialized treats - When we say commercially, DIY treats can't be sold commercially because you have to cater to all the pallets, where some dogs may be fussy, some dogs may be very highly motivated, and some may be in between. It has to be shelf stable, not just survive the transit time but also remain good with the customers for a long period of time. So to make a product that was free of preservatives, was 100% natural, no chemicals, no extra supplements used, or anything that can enhance the longevity of the treats. To make a product that had a shelf life of six months to nine months was a big achievement for us.” - Rachna Gujral.

The innovation helped the business to bring together all the pet health-conscious people in India together by providing a healthier and better alternative to them. The business has carved out a space for themselves by solving a problem that many pet parents were facing.“

The mission is the easy availability of such treats because right now these treats are not available in your local store, you will only find treats that are full of preservatives or full of not natural substances. So, my idea is to make sure this is available to them. And that's how we will have healthy dogs and we will give them a better life.” – Rachna Gujral.

Social and environmental benefit

They believe in promoting the local economy by procuring the items from the local farmers and distributors rather than producing the items unavailable in India and increasing the procuring cost. They are consciously picking up meat that is antibiotic-free, free of antibiotic residues, and procured from poultry farms that have all the quality controls in check.

Skylish is a brand that is very conscious about the impact its actions and packaging will be having on the environment and they also are very proud that its employees and team follow the same ethos and ethics.
