Going Circular: From Wood Waste to Biocoal

From the very beginning, the company was challenged to solve the technological transition issue in a very narrow and very old conservative sub-sector of charcoal production. "To date, the company has fully mastered the technology of its own conveyor pyrolysis and production from sawdust, that is, from sawmill waste, which no one in Russia now needs," Pavel told us. This coal has high quality, which allows Siberian Biocoal to compete with basic charcoal. In addition to developing a technology, the company develops its equipment at its own site in the Tomsk region, which will further improve the process to the ideal state.

The technology of conveyor pyrolysis of briquettes is the only one in the world and is patented by the Siberian Biocoal. With this innovation, the company aims to contribute to the achievement of SDG 9 "Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure" by supplying brand new equipment for biocoal production, as well as SDG 13 "Climate Action." Reducing the amount of wood waste will positively affect the state of environment in the future.

A Mission to Clean the Waterways

The solution is to clean up as much ocean land as possible by using supplies such as work gloves, water coolers with enough water to keep workers properly hydrated, especially in warm temperatures, first-aid kits for minor cuts and scrapes. Depending on the weather, sunscreen and bug spray may be needed.

In rich countries, cutting off the flow of plastic into the sea will require policy changes to encourage better waste management, a circular plastics industry, banning single-use plastics, and incentivizing reusable options. In poorer places, it requires all that and more widespread waste management.

People living in lower-income countries generally produce far less plastic waste per capita. People often dump their garbage in the street where rain and wind wash it into rivers, which eventually carry it to the ocean. Estimates of how much of the plastic at sea first floated down a river vary widely. A study funded by Ocean Cleanup put the range at 0.8 to 2.7 million tons per year. A growing population means that the number of people without garbage services will nearly double by 2040, compounding the problem.
