Group Machiels is a Belgian company globally active in renewable energy. Together with its talent and strong partnerships, the company wants to reinforce further its leading position in sustainable solutions. One way of doing this is through their new business innovation – energy sharing.

Energy sharing is the cross-border sharing of energy with other parties. By spreading the production and consumption of renewable energy across different entities, many new opportunities arise.

Energy sharing is not a product-level innovation but a company-level innovation of renewable energy. Business innovation contributes to SDG 7 – affordable and clean energy; SDG 9 – industry, innovation, and infrastructure; SDG 11 – sustainable cities and communities; and SDG 13 – climate action.

Building a future for generations

Vandersanden, located in Belgium, has been producing bricks since 1925. Even though Vandersanden is innovating rapidly, everything still revolves around bricks. Vandersanden has had the ambition to be CO2-neutral by 2050 for a while now, but as of late, they turned this into a promise (together to zero), and a promise made is a debt unpaid.

They recently invested in developing a new factory producing CO2-negative bricks. We will link this innovation with eight UN Sustainable Development Goals. These are the blueprints for a better and more sustainable future for all.

The business we chose is a car body shop that tackles climate change by introducing greener alternatives and techniques in their work, especially committing to the UN SDG 12 “Responsible Consumption and Production.”

They do this as they have become aware of their role in building a greener world for future generations. It aims to prove to the world that one can definitely combine sustainability and economic activity in the automotive sector.

Green is the new grey: Aperam’s vision for sustainable steel production

Eleven years ago, Aperam, a global player in stainless steel, was born as a spinoff from ArcelorMittal. Aperam is unique for its agricultural division, “BioEnergia.” It produces its charcoal, aiming to cut back the use of fossil fuels in the energy-guzzling process of steel production. We will link this innovation with the following 4 Sustainable Development Goals (hereafter: SDG): Climate action (SDG 13), Responsible consumption and production (SDG 12), Affordable and clean energy (SDG 7), and Clean water and sanitation (SDG 6).

CNI’s design aims to not only find all-encompassing solutions to common industry/community problems but also build a harmonized geographical network to overcome discrepancies. The company aligns with SDG 17 of ‘Partnership for Goals’ as its primary goal, as it aims to become a stepping stone towards a collaborative economy. The Incinerators solving Indonesia’s Waste Problem

The company specializes in waste management consulting and the production of sustainable and environmentally friendly trash disposal equipment. In Indonesia, there is a significant problem managing garbage due to the public attitude toward waste and the scarcity of landfills. As a result, the business aims to create waste processing techniques that could provide a solution to the current waste crisis affecting Indonesia aka the Emerald of the Equator. Their innovation includes a steam-fueled incinerator, called the Hydrodrive Waste Destroyer, that helps the country dispose of waste, and reach its climate goals. Some of the SDGs that the company is helping to solve are:

3D Printed Alternatives for a Sustainable Future

Cocuus is a company from Navarra that develops industrial solutions to produce plant/animal alternative protein analogues (mimetic food) using their 3 main areas of expertise: 2D/3D laser printing, bioprinting, and robotics; and combining more than 5 granted technological patents. The supporting cause of this innovation is to prevent the lack of proteins that is expected by 2035 (Cocuus is still trying to reach economies of scale), and improve the lives of people with swallowing difficulties (production is already underway). The aims outlined above go hand in hand with eliminating genetically modified foods and trans fats in the Spanish market and thus, reducing the risk of heart disease, the leading killer of adults. It aligns with SDGs number 3 (Good health and well-being) and 2 (Zero hunger). This new way of meat production, in turn, also contributes to SDGs 12 (Responsible production and consumption) and 15 (Life on land).

The mine, another neighbor of the Baztán valley

The innovation of the firm for the following triennium, from 2023-2025 is a mixture of several actions, but the main project is called Artesiaga. In this project, MAGNA Magnesitas Navarra is going to develop a plan in order to remain practicing their mining activity but in a sustainable way regarding three main axes: the economic, the social, and the environmental ones. The two first axes are deeply connected with SDG 11 (sustainable cities and communities) and the environmental axis has a deep relationship with SDGs 13 (climate action) and 15 (life on land). With the Artesiaga project, the company will keep on extracting magnesite from the ground (used in many different areas) and at the same time will keep generating wealth and employment.

The core idea of UWILL was to make a business club on payment basis just for women, because there was a demand for such a community, as other business clubs involved mostly men. The founder of the community wanted to empower women and give them more opportunities through UWILL society and nowadays it is a growing and prosperous community.

UWILL project contributes to the 5th SDG implementation, specifically, to its 5.5 Target. Its goal is to ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic, and public life.
