Ice Cream Initiative

Ben & Jerry’s business model innovation of reducing their carbon emissions directly relates to the 13th UN SDG of combating climate change. Ben & Jerry’s has various ways of reducing their carbon emissions, such as implementing a carbon tax which they have had since 2015, and carbon insetting, which “can lock atmospheric carbon in the soil or in trees” (Cooper, 2018).

Next Generation Farming

AeroFarms invented a new way of farming, producing zero waste, water recapture, and high-quality greens. AeroFarms uses a water recapture system called aeroponics to mist the roots of the plants and uses 95% less water compared to field farming. AeroFarms has a community farms program to end hunger and has partnered with cities and schools to build customized community farm programs. The business innovation is based on AeroFarms technology and how they use a new way of farming called vertical farming and aeroponics to grow the best of greens.

The Power of the Wind / El poder del viento

According to the United Nations, transport is one of the agents that contributes the most to greenhouse gas emissions, due to its dependence on fossil fuels. If the accelerated growth that is taking place continues, and no change is generated, emissions could triple by the year 2050. As indicated by the International Energy Agency, this would mean irreversible damage. According to its indicators, the increase in CO2 emissions is more than 36.3 billion tons. However, if 60% of the vehicles are electric -or hybrid- this pollution can decrease considerably.

For this reason, Eolo Motors seeks to contribute to the reduction of the carbon footprint generated by using conventional vehicles. As indicated by Mauricio Roldan, engineer, and co-founder of the company, “the world must change. If from now to 2030 it does not change, there is no going back (...) Mobility has been a clear example of this, we started with animal-drawn vehicles, steam vehicles, and then combustion. This is the time for electric vehicles.”

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Transformation of Organic Waste / Transformación de residuos orgánicos

According to data obtained by the Bogotá Environmental Observatory, in 2021, the city reported a 24% increase in waste generation with respect to 2020. In total, 2,924. 997 tons of waste were generated and, according to the Mayor's Office of Bogota2, 51.32% of this waste is organic, a discouraging figure for our environment and even more alarming if we take into account that they are being disposed of in dumps, generating an increase in air pollution (bad odors, deterioration of the quality of the air we breathe), soil (generation of leachate), surface and subway water, and intensifying the presence of insects and rodents around the dumps transmitting diseases to the inhabitants of the areas.

Given this increase in the generation of organic waste, alternatives for its treatment are required, oriented to prioritize its recycling and added value. It is in this scenario where Más Compost has dedicated its efforts to understand this environmental problem, propose and develop actions that favor the transformation and use of organic waste and involving the community to build a more sustainable city.

Eco-Innovation in the Automotive Industry

Reducing emissions, fossil fuel usage, and overall utilizing cleaner energy through electric cars has been the trademark of Tesla. Tesla launched their line of completely electric cars in 2008 and has dominated the electric car market since. Tesla’s mission is to build “a world powered by solar energy running on batteries and transported by electric vehicles” (“About Tesla”). Electric cars have been around since 1890, but Tesla is the first company to create a practical electric car for the average consumer. Tesla addresses multiple of the UN SDGs. Affordable and clean energy, innovation, and climate action. Tesla cars reduce carbon emissions, which eliminates contributions to global warming. Tesla’s first electric car was too expensive for the average consumer; however, since then Tesla has reduced its prices to increase affordable energy.

Gustavo provides around 15 percent of the business’ income to help support and maintain the Hilos De Luz foundation. He started helping around 4 years ago and has never looked back as he seeks to help as many kids as he can. His contribution at this point in time is helping around 100 kids get a better education and more opportunities. Gustavo started off by donating some of his profits to the foundation but over time, started becoming more involved. Some of his friends in Colombia are actually hands-on and help with the transportation (for the kids to get to school), teaching, and giving the supplies and other gifts to the kids.

Where Everyone Sees the End, We See a New Beginning / Donde Todos Ven el Final, Nosotros Vemos un Nuevo Comien

In Bogotá, 2.3 million tons of garbage are produced per day. Only 15% of this waste is recycled compared to 70% that could be used. The recyclers are the ones who do the most exhausting part of this collection process, working in precarious conditions, making great physical efforts that can deteriorate their health. Often, these employees are unable to secure a minimum wage despite working more than 8 hours a day.

Of the 30,500 recyclers in Colombia, 24,310 reside in Bogotá. Information is only available on 14,359 of whom 5% (1,129) are homeless, 29% (7,001) live in stratum 1 and 24% (5,813) belong to stratum 2. 25% (6,158) collect food in Zorrillo, 9% (2,146) in a tricycle and 8% (1,977) in a motorized vehicle.

For a dignified menstruation without taboos / Por una menstruación digna y sin tabúes

For some women, menstruation is still synonymous with fear or even shame, lack of information about its meaning and limited access to resources for the management of menstruation has caused this taboo to persist in each generation. The silence associated with menstruation foments gender inequality, because it prevents women and girls from experiencing their bodies as positive and empowering (UNFPA, 2021).

Menstruation is a symbol of femininity and is the result of a natural process, however, many people and cultures believe that it is the moment when a girl is ready to begin her sexual life, a situation that increases the risks of sexual violence and child marriage.

"Our goal is not to sell cups, our goal is to improve the menstrual experience...if another product comes out tomorrow, which is better, has less carbon footprint and it’s better for the menstruating person's experience, we will certainly switch." Rebecca Heredia, Social Impact Manager.

Likewise, not having complete and quality information about menstruation and reproductive processes limits their autonomy and increases the risk of girls, adolescents, and women to early and unintended pregnancies (UNFPA, 2021). Talking about menstruation, as something positive makes girls not be afraid and they can accept their nature with pride, if a girl has a high self-esteem it is much more difficult for her to be a victim of abuse (Diana Fabianova, director The moon in you in 2009).

"37% of girls start menstruating in a classroom context, a context in which neither the teachers, nor the school, nor the classmates, no one is prepared to assist that girl" - Rebecca Heredia, Social Impact Manager.

=============

Iturri and the EcoPolyFire / Iturri y el EcoPolyFire

According to the UN, it was estimated in 2018 that in Latin America and Columbia a generation of at least 33,200 out-of-use vehicles created an annual waste of about 80% of their calculated remaining materials.

According to the Environmental Guide for the treatment of out-of-use vehicles of the Ministry of the Environment of Colombia (2015), at the end of their useful life, the low recovery rates of the materials that constitute disintegrated vehicles do not maximize the reduction in the consumption of extracted resources. directly from nature or the reduction in water and electrical energy consumption associated with the production of these inputs for new vehicles.

Due to the above information, it is evident that there is a relevant problem in the region given the generation of solid waste from End of Life Vehicles that are currently polluting the environment.

*"Perspective Report on Waste Management in Latin America and the Caribbean UN 2018"

According to Eduardo Saez Caro Regional Sales Manager LATAM, "it is important to know the impact of the activity on the environment, seeking to be a little better in our production process".

_______________________________________________________________________

Fighting Inequality With Ice Cream

The innovation Ben & Jerry’s came up with is making new flavors and naming them after a social issue. The flavor names are unique and expose light to the issue they are talking about. For example, they have created flavors like EmpowerMint to shed light on voting issues. They renamed their popular Chubby Hubby flavor to Hubby Hubby to show support when Vermont legalized gay marriage. These efforts support the number 10 SDG: “Reduce inequalities in and among other countries.”

Handmade Jewelry: Elegance and Ecology / Joyeria Artesanal: Elegancia y Ecologia

According to UNEP (2021), "Plastic is the largest, most harmful and persistent fraction of marine debris, and represents at least 85% of total marine debris." In addition, other studies indicate that a plastic bottle takes around 700 to 1000 years to degrade, and aluminum takes approximately 250 years, which generates a great environmental impact. Currently, in Colombia, according to the Bogota Chamber of Commerce, the plastic sector generates 1.2 million tons per year, between raw materials and finished products. Of these, bottles and packaging account for 56%. According to the National Network of Solidarity Economy of Sustainable Flow, "2 billion weight of plastics that can be reused are buried annually", equivalent to 74% of plastic containers ending up in landfills. That is, only 26% of plastic bottles are recycled. (BEDOYA, 2016)

In the case of aluminum, the Special Administrative Unit of Public Services (UAESP), in its 2011 report, mentioned, "Characterization of residential solid waste generated in the Bogota city," which shows 2,350 tons/day of residential solid waste generated in the capital. Daily 0.14%, about 3.29 tons/day of aluminum is landfilled.

Also, based on the ECLAC publication (2018), "51.8% of people aged 70 years and older do not receive a retirement pension from a contributory system, with even higher rates for women.

"We seek to ennoble the materials, to give them a second use thinking of a better future for our generations."

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Transformación del aceite de cocina a biocombustibles / Transformation of used cooking oils into biofuel

Used oils generate a very large environmental problem in Colombia and worldwide This was established by Iñigo González Canal and José Antonio González, of the consortium Aguas Bilbao Bizkaia, in the study called Used Cooking Oils: environmental problems, where they estimate that a liter of used cooking oil is capable of contaminating up to 40,000 liters of water. This is because the density of the oil, that when it comes into contact with water it floats, creating a surface layer preventing light and oxygen from entering the water correctly, damaging all living things that inhabit in and around rivers.

Motivated by an entrepreneurial spirit that remains today, Alianza Team is a company with more than 70 years in the market, leader in the production of vegetable oils and other products. The company has more than 2,400 employees and has a presence in different countries in the region such as Mexico, Chile and Colombia. Within Alianza Team, their business unit, Manos Verdes (Green Hands), is in charge of collecting used cooking oils.

Green Hands Manager David Sanchez comments, "In the pursuit of fulfilling our higher purpose of Feeding a Better Tomorrow, we understood that there is no development and growth without a sustainable awareness during the time we all grow" .
