Miijidaa cafe + bistro is a Guelph staple, known for its conscious efforts toward a more environmentally sustainable business practice and running a socially responsible business. Their efforts also include their dedicated participation in ‘The Neighbourhood Group’ which is a Canadian organization aimed to promote restaurants that source locally crafted foods and beverages while championing the farmers and producers that made them.
Miijidaa has made it their mission to be a respected, local restaurant from day one, six years ago. Miijidaa focuses on native Canadian cuisine, starting with the influence of the First Nations, followed by the French and English traditions. Being a part of ‘The Neighbourhood Group’ has allowed Miijidaa to have lots of opportunities to connect with local farmers and food producers that supply the bistro with fresh, sustainable ingredients. Miijidaa is also a Certified B Corporation which ensures that they meet social sustainability and environmental performance standards. The Cafe & Bistro is very community-oriented and has lots of activities and opportunities for the community to feel involved with the restaurant such as, the Northern Lights Food Festival, and Miijidaa’s Reusable Library- a place where customers are welcome to checkout reusable dishes as an alternative to single use items. Miijidaa also has conducted many green-planet initiatives like reusable straws, takeout containers to reduce food waste, as well as a brand new food waste conservation system.

Miijidaa has been a socially and environmentally responsible business ever since they opened their doors to the community. Right from the start, they knew that Miijidaa was bound to be an amazing addition to the community due to their involvement in the B-Corp organization. They’ve always been an active member in ‘The Neighbourhood Group’ since they opened, which requires them to always have the best interest of the community, customers, and CO2 output at the heart of their operations. They’ve been environmentally conscious from the beginning, and six years later, they continue to advance in their outstanding environmental efforts. Everyday more methods of reducing negative impacts are released and Miijidaa is still known to be one of the first to get the ball rolling with new products that coincide with their eco-initiatives.
Miijidaa’s social and environmental initiatives certainly don’t go unnoticed by the community. Miijidaa organizes many community-oriented events to bring in new customers and retain their current customers. They have many themed food festivals, holiday meals, as well as charity events and donation efforts toward local community charities such as Hope House. They also have many themed nights for customers to indulge in, with deals for two.The manager, Veronica, explained how they have a close-knit group of loyal, regular customers that keep coming back for the friendly atmosphere of close friends and good food.
As for environmental efforts, Miijidaa must be one of the most ecologically conscious businesses in Guelph. They are constantly looking for new ways to improve their carbon footprint with the newest eco-friendly, recyclable trends. For the new year, Miijidaa has taken a challenge upon themselves of making one change a week in their restaurant that reduces their environmental impact. Their first change was creating the “Reusable Library’, a collection of donated mugs and cutlery for customers to use and take with them rather than single-use cups and plastic cutlery, given that they return it during their next visit to Miijidaa.
Discussing Miijidaa’s financial success as their social and environmental initiatives increase with Veronica, she explained that the more they do for their community tends to broaden their own customer base with more people wanting to support their business. The events planned for the community allows neighbours to feel welcomed, therefore encouraging them to visit the restaurant. Their environmental impacts get eco-enthusiasts quite excited and many others are more than happy to support a local business that is striving to go above and beyond in all social and environmental aspects.
The business has been following these environmental and social standards since the day it opened, however it’s clear that these initiatives benefit the business at the end of the day. As previously stated, many people are more likely to support a business that is working hard to make a positive difference in the community and our global climate change initiative.
The community-driven initiatives encourage inclusion and community involvement within the neighbouring areas of Miijidaa. Customers are encouraged to come together at these events and celebrate alongside close friends over good food. Miijidaa is changing the game when it comes to being an environmentally conscious and friendly business, with new products and methods of recycling, they are making quite a difference. They share eco-friendly business practices with directly competitive restaurants simply to ensure that together we can create a greener downtown Guelph.
