Overview

Madoverbiking intends to make people reclaim the control of their life and cherish time which no one seems to have today, experience and improve their physical and mental existence through this amazing sport called cycling. We are building a community-driven platform where we encourage riders to come out and ride, train themselves with the right tools, buy the right stuff and eventually get into competitive cycling. Madoverbiking offers you affordable racing with like-minded people who will act as a support system for each other and ultimately prepare themselves for tougher and higher challenges. It is a performance oriented platform, whereby the intention is not to make everyone a professional cyclist but rather keep the flame ignited and rising. The flame which will rise from you for pampering yourself, love for nature, reducing your carbon footprint and common concern for future generations of all species.

Innovation

Cyclists in Delhi have been splurging on top quality road bikes. Once they acquire such prized possessions, they look to utilize these purpose-built machines. For a long time there was a void on the streets of Delhi. Sunday morning breakfast rides are fun, but do not present a challenge. Brevets are wonderful, but are non-competitive. There were cyclists raring to go, with nowhere to go. This is where entered, Mad Over Biking, a bunch of madcap enthusiasts who decided to cater to that void and organize road races in NCR. Mad Over Biking started out in May 2018. The owners thought of creating a community driven performance platform. They thought, many people buy expensive bikes and kit, but there wasn’t a platform to race for the community, primarily for road racing. So, they decided to provide a platform to this cyclists. A week before the first race, they put up a few posters contacted a few people. Since they have been a part of the community for a long time here, they know a lot of cyclists. In the first race they got a good response. Around 30 people landed up to race. It was a decent number. After that they conducted races regularly. Trying to host at least one race every month. They would only skip racing in the monsoons for safety reasons.

Level-Up
2019 is their second season of hosting races and they are on a steep learning curve as they strive to improve with every race. Rahul tells us ‘how they levelled up their game’ at MOB:

In 2019 they started – Level Up rides. This isn’t a racing thing, but a community driven ride. The idea is to get people on their bikes and out for a ride. Basically, building a connect with the community so that we could channel those interested into racing. The idea of these rides was just to have fun. They had these rides in Faridabad, Noida etc. They spoke to groups and individuals, inviting them for these rides. Thanks to this, a lot of leisure cyclists also came to race. Those who wanted to improve themselves.

Endure It

In the second season, they added another dimension: longer rides. They call it Endure It. Unlike brevets which are more leisurely, they wanted to have performance driven endurance rides. To initiate people, they did a couple of 100 km rides, in a gap of a month. This gave participants an idea of gauging their fitness on the first ride and the improvement a month later. Instead of going the old pen-paper way they used technology and went digital. They gave the participants a barcode and this was scanned at the control points, leading to less chances of errors and faster processing of riders through these control points.

Inspiration

"Mad over biking was basically an idea that was started amongst 4-5 cyclist who were friends and it was basically to build the performance driven cycling platform in Delhi, NCR. So, what we thought earlier was that everybody cycles and people get up at 4am in the morning and then they ride, So, why not create a platform where everybody could join our events, focus on the right way to cycle and primarily focus on building performance and fitness over a period of time".

"I am a cyclist myself, I am extremely passionate about cycling. It was our love for cycling and the passion to share this love that led us to start this company. Cycling for us is a great way to not just keep fit but also a way for us to connect to the environment. With the pollution levels rising day-by-day it is important for us to use and promote eco-friendly ways of living and we aim to spread this message through every ride of ours. It is the cause as well as our passion that pushes us each day to work harder for Mad Over Biking."

Overall impact

Mad over Biking provides a platform to people to use cycling as a form of transport and has had a tremendous impact on the society. Cycling instills a sense of responsibility in people towards the environment. The company also makes cycling a fun activity to do with friends which induces people to do cycling more often. The company believes in the ideology of growth happens in inclusivity. As people are increasingly becoming health conscious, cycling provides health benefits with benefits to the environment as a whole.

Business benefit

"I think the overall journey has been exciting only. we started in May 2018. At that time, we did our 1st race. So, when we started out we used to do races but then eventually we got into rides and we did corporate rides, we did fun rides, long-distance rides. So, the journey from cycling to conducting racing across the spectrum has been a high point in our two years of inception and that is what I think I am proud of. One of the events that we did was Freedom 500 challenge. It was a PAN India cycling challenge and we got over 200 participants across the country. That was in the month of August. Organizing that event was very motivating and a high point for all that helped us do even better things going forward."

Social and environmental benefit

The basic idea behind Mad over Biking was to organize cycling races so as to build a community to network those interested in racing. It began as a medium for people to network over races but gradually led to bringing about awareness in cyclists about the positive impact it has on the environment. With the growing awareness of the health benefits of cycling, people started enrolling in larger numbers in the races. As people cycled more they were discouraged to use cars even for going to work as they became more aware about the ill effects of pollution on the environment.
