Mr. Clinton Vaz idea is in 19th year of its operation now, his innovative idea is based on his expertise which he has gained by going through the journey. Vrecycle has also gone many ups and downs during its course of time. Mr. Clinton also shared that how the processes have changed over time, what was not recyclable few years back can be recycled now.

He also shared that the major challenges he faced included dealing with GST, dealing with legal issues of treating waste management as business in Goa. On a social level, he shared that creating awareness among people and educating people on proper separation of waste was also challenging because many people expect waste management as a free service.

Inspiration

The idea of Vrecycle striked Mr. Clinton accidentally when he was moving from city to a village. He noticed that was no proper method of waste disposal apart from the conventional ways to get rid of waste by burning it, dumping it on the land or by throwing it in a river. Mr. Clinton was not in favor of any of the three methods and decided to contact garbage pickers. He found out that these garbage pickers can convert 75% of the waste into compost, Mr. Clinton checked his surroundings and found out that many of his neighbors wanted him to manage their garbage. He decided to help them and it eventually led to the business when he started giving waste management services to the clients.

Overall impact

Vrecycle is creating an impact on society which is majorly divided into three groups :

1. Gram panchayats which is a group of 5 villages in Goa. Vrecycle picks up their waste at a household level

2. Housing Societies which range from 10-80 homes. Vrecycle currently handles about 50 housing societies in Goa

3. Individual homes which range from 75-100 homes, from where Vrecycle directly picks up waste

4. Vrecycle is helping the range of 10-15 kms in its area of operation to manage waste properly and contribute to the ecosystem.

5. Vrecycle is using different technologies in managing recyclable and non-recyclable waste. Vrecycle segregates recyclable waste into three categories, high value, low value and no value. High value recyclable waste includes paper and cardboard which can be recycled easily. Low value recyclable waste includes plastic bottles, glass, tetra pack which are heavy and difficult to recycle. No value recyclable waste includes electronic waste and tube lights which are very difficult to recycle.

6. Vrecycle is also helping cement industry which uses waste as a replacement of coal (10%-20%) and incinerate waste and recover the heat energy generated, which is used for production of cement. Also, the residue left is mixed with cement, in this way 100% disposal takes place.

Business benefit

Vrecycle operates in a range of 10-15 kms from its location, which makes the business very cost effective in terms of transportation cost . Vrecycle is successfully managing all kinds of waste, including plastic, in its operating range of 15kms. Vrecycle makes profit by charging a nominal fee for their services.

Vrecycle is currently operating at its full capacity, Mr. Clinton said that he cannot take any new clients unless he loss on some older ones. Thus, he is really looking forward to duplication of his idea by someone else as a franchise.

We have personally talked the ground staff of Vrecycle, we found out that Vrecycle is providing a work life balance to its employees. They looked very happy working in Vrecycle, as they knew that they are contributing to the ecosystem. They were highly motivated and explained us the process of waste management by live demonstrations. Vrecycle believes in gender equality, providing equal wages to male and female employees which is also higher than average wages. Employees are also provided with regular health check ups.

Social and environmental benefit

Vrecycle is solely based on the idea of contributing to society and environment. Vrecycle has created awareness in about 10,000 households, who are now following proper waste segregation methods, which ultimately leads to an easy process of waste management. Mr. Clinton has also taken many seminars in educational institutes where he has created awareness among students that how the volume of waste is increasing due to our consumption pattern. He told students to reduce the quantum of waste by controlling the urge of impulsive shopping and buying products of minimal packaging.

Vrecycle also went out of miles when it took the initiate of cleaning islands. Vrecycle has cleaned three islands where scuba divers went under water and pulled the garbage out. Thus, Vrecycle has made significant contribution in creating a sustainable environment.
