How a Co-operative Childcare Centre Has Changed a Community

The Growing Our Future Childcare Cooperative is the first childcare center that offers an enhanced childcare services model in the Town of Channel-Port Aux Basques. This daycare was created to address the need in the community for childcare services. This model is quite different from other capitalistic models in which the daycare owner/operator makes the decisions on the day-to-day operations. Through the cooperative model, parents and community members pay a $100 share into the daycare which gets reinvested back into the community through various services the daycare provides. This center has created positive economic growth in the community through the various jobs it provides as well as created an early childhood education learning space for the children which directly impacts the sustainability of the community. This center solves SDG #3- Good health and well-being, #4- Quality Education, #8- Decent work and economic growth & #11- Sustainable cities and communities.

Plant-based milk alternatives are usually sold in Tetra Pak cartons which is usually hard to recycle. These products contain mainly water which is transported throughout the country creating more carbon emissions than necessary. The business helps solve the problems of packaging waste, transport emissions, and production with plant-based milk alternatives.

The innovation helps to solve the following United Nations Sustainability Development Goals (UN SDGs): responsible consumption and production, good health and well-being, climate action, and industry, innovation, and infrastructure.

Giving a second life to waste/ Reviviendo los Residuos

They also offer the "Revive-Wood" portfolio, where pallets, MDF, kitchens, and deteriorated wooden furniture are recycled to create post-consumer cabins (where difficult-to-treat waste can also be eliminated), green point, and household products. They are currently venturing into a new line called "Revive Electronics", where the useful life of the equipment is extended by renewing it.

Through its innovations, this company contributes to creating a more sustainable world and encourages responsible consumption by giving a second life to what we previously thought was garbage and properly eliminating waste so that it re-enters the production chain.

Dignifying the work of bees

________________________________________________

In Colombia and around the world, there have been bad practices in the production and sale of honey, leading to adulterated products diluted with syrups. These unethical practices deceive consumers and undermine the work of bees. Therefore, one of Luna de Miel's purposes is to dignify honey in Colombia. As its slogan "Made by bees" indicates, they aim to pay a fair price to their suppliers and collaborators across the country.

Innovating education with animatronic technology / Innovando la educación con tecnología animatrónica

Colombia, like many other developing countries, faces significant challenges in education. According to UNESCO, the country is still far from achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4, which seeks to guarantee quality education for all. The figures are worrying: 17.5% of school-age children do not attend school, and the illiteracy rate among young people is 5.8%. To address this problem, Ingennova, founded by Julián, has set out to transform education in Colombia through technology. They develop animatronics and educational robots that make learning a fun and interactive experience, thus promoting children's participation in education and helping them acquire vital skills for the 21st century. "Our approach is simple," says Julián. "We want to make learning exciting. Our products are designed to capture children's attention and keep them engaged, which in turn improves their academic performance."

===============================================

Pedal Powered: The E-Bike Couriers Transforming Dunedin

As I wait outside the Pedals headquarters, it’s a typical Dunedin autumn day – Cold. Grey. Wet. Not the kind of day one would typically feel like going out for a bike ride. Yet, through the sheets of rain appears a figure on a bike. But not just any bike – a 170kg capacity 500W e-cargo bike, specially built for the Pedals purpose to provide sustainable, same-day courier services across the city. As Liam, the founder of Pedals, pulls up beside me he is drenched but wears a huge smile.

“It’s just a bit of water!” he exclaims.

And so it is that Liam’s tolerance for inclement weather and enthusiasm for the bicycle lifestyle has led to the creation and start-up success of Pedals, with Liam and his team sustainably delivering around 60 packages, over 1,500 newspapers and more than 3,000 magazines each week – often travelling over 100kms a day on their bikes.

In Aotearoa New Zealand, transport is responsible for 17% of the country’s gross emissions, a figure which Liam hopes to help curb by getting more cars off the road and inspiring people to get on their bikes. Indeed, as I would find out through the course of our interview, sustainability is deeply embedded into the Pedals mission. From contributing to the development of Dunedin as a sustainable city (SDG 11) to providing living wage employment (SDG 8) and good health and wellbeing (SDG 3), Pedals is poised to change the way people think about transportation and cycling in Dunedin.
