Eco-Efficiency in Coal Mining: From Waste to Eco- Friendly Bricks

Waste is one of the main problems faced by Indonesia. The type of waste is divided into organic waste and inorganic waste that is not processed often causes environmental pollution. The accumulation of waste that occurs around the environment triggered the company PT JBG (Jorong Barutama Greston) which is one of the subsidiaries of PT ITM (Indo Tambangraya Megah) located in South Kalimantan to build a place to utilize waste in eco-friendly bricks.

Since its establishment, PT. Vale Indonesia has pledged to reduce CO2 emissions by constructing a hydroelectric power plant, which commenced operations in 1979. In addition, starting in 2019, PT. Vale began employing electric boilers powered by hydropower for processing facility operations. With this invention, the usage of high-sulfur fuel oil (HSFO) is decreased by 67,047 barrels annually. The electric boiler utilized by PT Vale was also the first in Southeast Asia's processing sector.

PT Vale lowered GHG emissions by 330,688 tonnes of CO 2eq in 2022, to 1,640,387 tonnes of CO 2eq, or 17% less than in 2021 (1,971,075 tonnes of CO 2eq). Over five years, from 2018 to 2022, PT Vale reduced GHG emissions by 373,563 tons of CO2eq.

PT. Vale not only uses renewable energy for its operations, but it also helps local communities by organizing home waste management initiatives based on a circular economy, sorting economically useful garbage, and utilizing waste as an alternative fuel in the form of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF).

Ometéotl is a Mexican clay artisan workshop, located in Santa María Atzompa, Oaxaca, which has an impact on promoting decent work, responsible production, and consumption of natural resources.

Ana Martínez, daughter of two artisans from the equally renowned region for their craftsmanship in Atzompa, Oaxaca, recounts how her life has revolved around art since she was 8 years old, when she began playing with clay in her mother's workshop. Today she owns the "Ometéotl" workshop. In it, the clay used in her pieces is responsibly sourced, extracted, and treated with 100% organic materials to prevent pollution, and now provides space for other women to learn and teach other women and children about crafts in the region.

According to a study conducted by McCain, a multinational company leader in frozen food products, it was identified that among the 180 countries where the company operates, the most vulnerable farmers are in Colombia, where 75% have an income lower than a Legal Monthly Minimum Wage (US$330); 80% work informally and 70% have a low level of education, which directly impacts the country’s poverty rate.
