Bac à marée is a company established by Fabrice Faure. It is a network of marine waste containers called "bac à marée" intending to combat a significant problem: ocean and sea pollution. This network is a complementary tool to the actions already carried out. In addition to contributing to the collection and removal of marine debris, it is an indicator for monitoring the ecological status of the coast. This network also works upstream of the problem, both on the scale of rivers and streams and on a human scale, as there is a clear link between human lifestyle and the tons of macro-plastic waste found washed up on our coasts and beaches.
Vortex, a company dedicated to creating a digital twin of our waterways. Co-founded by Guillaume, Vortex has developed a sensor that provides water information and allows for predictions. Vortex.io sells monitoring and alert services, its data always remains proprietary. As the co-founder explains in our interview: "Today the value is not the sensor, it's the data".
The objective of Vortex, thanks to its digital twin, is to have a human toll that approaches 0 during floods and to minimize the financial repercussions as much as possible and to limit the deterioration of the various installations.

FreeWater is a company that provides free drinking water to consumers funded by advertisements on the bottle. FreeWater donates a percentage of the money from the ads to help people in need. Currently, FreeWater donates 10 cents per beverage to Well Aware, an Austin-based nonprofit that builds water projects in underdeveloped areas.

Orba creates shoes made of plant-based materials, challenging the status quo dependence on using synthetic, petrochemical-based components in footwear production. Currently, billions of shoes are made each year from harmful polluting materials, leading to enormous amounts of waste once people stop wearing them. Once footwear ends up in landfills, it can take thousands of years for the components to break down (Hoskins, 2020). This process risks toxic chemicals leaching from the waste into soil and waterways. Orba bucks this trend and incorporates sustainability into all lifecycle stages of its footwear, aiming to make its shoes fully compostable, proving that it is possible to produce high-quality, stylish, and durable footwear that doesn’t cost the earth.
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals have been adopted by Orba as a “benchmark for best sustainable business practices” to guide the company’s strategy and practice. With this, the business has identified nine SDGs to which it can make the most impact: SDGs 1, 3, 8, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16.

At Dunedin Craft Distillers, founders Jenny McDonald and Sue Stockwell are tackling Aotearoa, New Zealand’s 46,194 Tonnes of bakery sugar and confectionery waste per annum (Reynolds, Mirosa, and Clothier, 2016); one gin at a time. Gin is traditionally made by distillation of alcohol from a fermented malt wash that is then infused with botanical aromatics, including juniper. Stockwell and McDonald developed a process where varying waste bakery products, from donuts to sourdough, replace up to 90% of the malt. Demand for their premium, award-winning gin is growing, and 5.9 Tonnes of waste bakery products have been upcycled since their start in 2020. Sustainability lies at the heart of their business approach primarily through responsible consumption and production (SDG.12), enabled through partnerships with social enterprises and the wider community (SDG.17).

There is debate about whether carbon offsets are a good thing for the environment as fewer than 10% of air travelers offset their flights (Ritchie et al., 2020). While it is always best to reduce or remove emissions, there are some that are simply unavoidable. The development of technology to reduce or remove these emissions even further is underway; however, it will take time for these to come to fruition and be implemented at a meaningful scale. Carbon offsets allow for the emissions happening now to be offset, reducing negative impact.
Part of the problem with carbon offsetting, for both businesses and consumers, is that it is difficult to understand the impact of the differing offset projects as many examples of carbon offset projects do not achieve what they are say they are going to do. “At the heart of it, I’m on a mission to reduce back pain, and the disability that back pain causes”, says Bart de Vries, physiotherapist and founder of Limber, a small company in Aotearoa New Zealand building a movement for movement. What started with a desire to stop the cycle of back pain has grown to include a product range of dynamic desks, stools, posture courses and back health resources aiming to normalise the movement that comes with working and living from the floor.
Bart speaks emphatically on the enormous societal burden of back pain, explaining that “back pain is the number one cause of disability in the world, eight out of ten people experience back pain in their life, it’s the number one reason people retire early, [and] it’s the number one cause for lost workplace productivity,” claims backed by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (Low Back Pain Clinical Care Standard | Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care, n.d.). In response, Limber is working to create environments that allow us to get the movement our backs need to stay healthy without conscious effort, as part of a goal to halve back pain by 2050.
By confronting a significant determinant of work-related back pain and disability, and doing so with sustainable sourcing and circular economy-inspired business practices, Limber creates healthy outcomes for people and the planet, contributing to several of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals: good health and well-being (3), decent work (8), and responsible consumption (12).

Plantible Foods is an innovative company based out of San Diego that aims to change the food industry by developing a climate-friendly plant-based protein. This project was started by Tony Martens and Maurits Van de Ven in 2016, when they discovered RuBis Co (also known as Rubi protein). After the protein was discovered, their objective was to produce it in mass quantities in their sensitive aqaufarms. They use a flowering plant called lemna, which is high in this protein.
