Less Pesticides, More Sustainability In Agriculture

"The vocation of this innovation is to reduce the use of phytosanitary products used in agriculture and to promote the implementation of alternative solutions, in particular the use of auxiliaries means to combat pests." E-Gleek therefore promotes better health (SDG 3) by encouraging a reduction in the use of pesticides on the products we consume. In addition, there are fewer pesticides and chemical containers that end up in the water tables and rivers, so the innovation promotes clean water and sanitation (SDG 6). Finally, E-Gleek protects life (SDG 15) present on agricultural fields, especially insects, but also all the biodiversity that depends on them (birds, etc.).

Stay Warm With Thermal Storage

Neothermal Energy Storage is a home supplemental heating and hot water system that stores heat using sodium acetate trihydrate. Its innovative, clean, and sustainable electrical thermal storage (ETS) heater is designed to reduce oil consumption in homes by 80-90% while also reducing costs. Their patent-pending smart-grid compatible electric thermal storage operates efficiently, reduces heat loss, requires no electrical panel upgrade, and can be coordinated with renewable energy.

A Pathway to Decarbonizing the Concrete Industry

Concrete is everywhere; it is used to build our roads, schools, hospitals, and water systems. In fact, concrete is the most abundant human-made material in the world (CarbonCure's eBook). The widespread use of concrete is a testament to its efficacy, and it is expected to be used increasingly as population growth and urbanization trends result in more densely populated cities (CarbonCure's eBook). However, there is one major problem. Concrete production is one of the largest industrial emitters of carbon dioxide (CO2) and is a major contributor to the global climate crisis (CarbonCure's eBook). There is, thus, an urgent need for greener concrete. At the forefront of such innovation is CarbonCure Technologies Inc. (CarbonCure), a company that specializes in carbon dioxide removal technologies for the concrete sector.

Helping Solve the Global Sanitation Crisis

Kimberly-Clark aims to lead the world in essentials for a better life, and the company believes that helping people live better lives means serving unmet societal needs. Kimberly-Clark is working to help achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 3 (Good health and well-being); SDG 5 (Gender equality); and SDG 6 (Clean water and sanitation). Solving these goals and others is part of the company’s ambition to improve the lives of 1 billion people in underserved communities around the world with the smallest environmental footprint by 2030.

Striving for Justice

Just Us! may not have created the concepts for their innovations, however the innovations they take part in are largely un-adopted. The key innovations for the business are founded on the concept that business can be a vehicle for change. First, the business is a worker cooperative which is uncommon in the North American business world. A prime example of a democratic organization, the workers at Just Us! own the business and make the decisions. Additionally, the business was the first fair trade roaster in Canada, which is a large innovation in terms of international development and capacity building of producers in the Global South. They have maintained this innovative work through the Small Producers' Symbol, or SPP by its Spanish acronym. This is a little known fair trade label, but more importantly it is a platform created by small producers of democratically organized coffee and other product cooperatives.

Gravity Payments – Purpose Over Profit

For most American businesses, money is the motivator. The drive to increase profits at all costs has left many employees in pain, as their salaries are seen as expenditures to be kept as low as possible. People, employees, are relegated to a column in a spreadsheet, their lives characterized as ‘human capital. While this is true in many places, it is not true for Gravity Payments.

In 2015, CEO Dan Price decided to do something unheard of – he implemented a plan to raise salaries to $70,000 for every one of the 120 employees of his company, in part by taking a pay cut himself. Dan had come to believe that the company would be better served by happy, dedicated employees who felt valued, lived free of economic stress, and ultimately stayed at the company longer. He was right.

This is that story, as told to me by Jessica Moore, Director of Sales for Gravity Payments.

A Holistic Approach To Absenteeism

Ms. Altman started her career as a teacher and immediately discovered that absenteeism was a fundamental challenge affecting quality education.

The lightbulb moment happened at a parent-teacher night when the parent of a student named Alexander was surprised and embarrassed to find out from her daughter's report card that her daughter was missing almost 50% of the school day, and she had never received a call.

Ms. Altman went the extra mile to save Alexander's mom's number in her phone, which eventually blossomed into a wonderful parent-teacher and student-teacher relationship resulting in a positive turnaround in Alexander's academic life, and the birth of the KiNVO App.

Ecuadorian Company Leading The Path To More Sustainable Business Practices

Santa Priscilla became a pioneer in Ecuador when it established protocols for the use of probiotics and the elimination of antibiotics in production. Even at a time when some biologists argued that it was impossible to produce without them, Santa Priscilla showed compromise and resilience to eradicate their use. It became an example to its sector and, eventually, to the world.

Thinking "Outside the Box"

MonkieBox is a company located in Pamplona, Spain, and founded in December of 2020. MonkieBox offers a self-storage service, adapted to the reality of people's lives. MonkieBox facilitates a new way for students and other individuals to store furniture and clothes, among other commodities, in case consumers move cities or apartments during their professional/academic life. This allows for mindset shifts toward more responsible consumption, as individuals now can buy higher quality goods that they will hold onto for longer periods, instead of cheap, low quality ones that they get rid off when moving locations. Thus, MonkieBox contributes to Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG12).

A Durable Business Model

This innovation is represented by the durable business model that COPAG has developed. As mentioned earlier, COPAG does not have traditional suppliers of raw materials. Instead, it is a cooperative with members and adherents who provide it with its raw materials, which then are converted by COPAG's factories to the final products it provides to its customers. This reflects how COPAG's members are the backbone of its success, and thus COPAG is concerned with the satisfaction of its members just as much as it is with its customers. Mr. Elalaoui, COPAG's marketing director, said: “We are always in touch with our members throughout meetings, workshops, travels… This way, we get to listen to them, understand their problems, and work on solving them. That is the sense we carry as a cooperative.”

With that in mind, COPAG has assigned itself the mission of providing multiple services to its members and adherent cooperatives. This way, COPAG manages to grow itself as a for-profit company while ensuring the perfect environment for its members simultaneously. The services COPAG provides to its members go hand in hand with some of the SDGs as they contribute to fighting poverty and hunger, limiting gender inequality, as well as providing quality education. By doing so, COPAG is actively helping to achieve socio-economic development in the region and Morocco in general.

Recycling Computer Parts for Less E-Waste

The innovation in question is the collection of old DELL computer units donated by both the everyday customers and corporations in order to re-use and recycle the components into new computers. This avoids having those components go to waste and lessens the need for DELL to make more parts for future computers thus saving both money and the earth's limited resources by reducing waste. This allows for consumers to recycle some of the existing waste present in their everyday homes and businesses.

This innovation not only achieves the responsible production goal, but also has a positive action on the climate by reducing the amount of toxic e-waste produced yearly. In 2020 alone, e-waste was estimated to be around 50 million units.

When compared to similar recycling programs in other technology companies, DELL has a broader reach as they offer its recycling program globally instead of limiting it to a few countries. DELL also offers more varied programs not only limited to old computers; for example, the company has a program responsible for the collection and recycling of old ink cartridge and another for old batteries. Overall, DELL's innovation has an expansive reach and is available to everyone with less caveats to participation.

Empowering Women One Piece of Clothing at a Time

The Compassion Fund is a complex innovation founded in 2002 with a mission to support community-based organizations that help disadvantaged and homeless women become self-sufficient. The Fund has given back to nearly 100 organizations across the country while donating nearly 700,000 pieces of clothing to women in need. The efforts of the Compassion Fund directly relate to four of the SDGs, including gender equality, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, and partnerships for the goals.

Best of Both Worlds: Fashionable and Sustainable

This innovation manufactures its jewelry using eco-friendly material, and promotes sustainability and responsibility through slow fashion. Furthermore, engaging local artisans in the business aligns with the first SDG which is about eliminating poverty, as consumer behavior shifted towards purchasing daily needs during the pandemic.

The First Moroccan Eco-Friendly Sneakers

The innovation in question is that of combining two unlikely resources that are the Moroccan traditional craftsmanship and repurposed materials such as plastic and VHS. AMAZ works on rekindling the fire of Moroccan craftsmanship by giving it a new modern look through their colorful sneaker designs that are both vegan and eco-friendly. This innovative idea touches both the environmental as well as the social aspect seeing how the company creates stable jobs for artisans and contributes to the reduction of waste output through repurposing.

Extracting the best of nature and converting it into liquid extracts that food and beverage companies will use in their products is how Kalsec is able to help feed the hungry in a healthy and sustainable way. Food and beverage manufacturers rely on spice and herb extracts to consistently flavor the foods they make. Kalsec’s portfolio includes flavors for meats, pickling, and even pepperoni seasoning. Inclusive Circular Fashion / Moda Circular Inclusiva

Sandra Acosta, Manager of the initiative, is an entrepreneur and social manager. With more than ten years working in Spain in the social sector in projects of conscience, the seed of a company with the social sense was sown: "to promote in our country the conscious trend of consuming and manufacturing with responsibility is possible and, of course, the sustainability of the brand and the stakeholders who accompanied the project from its birth to its maturation as a business." La Beltrana promotes improvements in the quality of life of the people who participate in the project. The product is made by people in vulnerable situations.

The project, led by Sandra Acosta Beltrán, was born in Bogotá-Colombia at the end of 2017, motivated by finding a solution to two current problems:

1. Decrease textile industry pollution by using remaining or in-disuse textile materials in a process known as Upcycling.

2. Lack of opportunities in vulnerable population (specially victims of armed conflict), including them in the productive process and offering them good job conditions.
