The Korean Headquartered engineering and construction company, POSCO E&C, contributes job creation by fostering job seekers, who doesn’t have enough skill to be hired at construction site, through education of construction theory and training of actual skills in Jakarta, Indonesia. Eventually, some of the trainee could be hired at their on-going project site as construction worker.

Inspiration

While POSCO E&C has been doing their construction work in Jakarta, they found out that there are a lot of unemployed youth around their project site. Moreover, they found out that most of them are not skilled nor educated about the construction site thus can’t be hired. Due to high unemployment rate and lack of training centers for professional skills, the Company sites suffer from difficulties in obtaining skilled construction workers. In response, POSCO E&C has opened training centers to foster skilled construction workers in areas nearby overseas sites to provide the theoretical and practical training of basic construction skills such as electricity, facilities, welding, and safety for youth. After completing the training program, they become linked to the construction sites of the Company through employment as skilled construction workers, thus securing skilled labor, while also contributing to job creation and self-reliance of local youths.

Overall impact

Total 100 youth completed the training course. Among those who completed the training course can be hired at POSCO E&C’s construction site in Jakarta. There were total 4 times training course and each time 25 people can participate in the program. The program is consisted of Basic construction theories and practices (re-bar, carpentry, masonry, plastering, electricity, plumbing, etc.). Total training duration is 63 hours and while they were in the program, they were provided accommodation, meal, working clothes and pocket allowance.

Business benefit

After completing the training program, they become linked to the construction sites of the Company through employment as skilled construction workers, thus securing skilled labor, while also contributing to job creation and self-reliance of local youths. In addition, due to this positive activities are well known in the community, there were less complaints and hassles from the vicinity.

Social and environmental benefit

POSCO E&C tries to empathize with various social issues arising from local communities and takes part in addressing the issues as a reliable corporate citizen and a member of the community. They contribute towards addressing social issues related to education and employment with local governments and/or non-profit organizations. In this case, by fostering the local youth, who try to find jobs nearby their vicinity, through providing training program especially for construction site, the youth in the community have chances to learn skills they need to get job opportunity in construction site and the company have better workforce in the region.
