Summary

The purpose of this business innovation is to provide energy-efficient solutions that conserve natural resources and promote individual and community self-reliance. The company can custom design any solar solution with high-quality equipment and components. This is an innovation that is much needed in a society like ours, as we immensely depend on the use of technology but often fail to recognize the consequences of doing so. The use of solar technology is something that can help create a better future for both local and global communities, as well as for generations to come. This is evident in the company's accordance with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals related to affordable and clean energy, as utilizing solar power rather than fossil fuels helps to ensure that energy can be relied upon now and in the future.

Innovation

In 1973, during the gasoline-scarce oil embargo, John Parry was inspired for the company concept while waiting in a gas station line. He wanted to find a more effective solution for energy needs aside from the typical use of fossil fuels. In 1986, Solar Works was born when Parry built a solar hot water business, which he later expanded to offer renewable energy and resource-conserving services with a focus on solar electricity.

Today, Solar Works has installed more solar systems in Sonoma County, California than any other local installer. Solar energy currently generates 10% of all of the state's electric energy today and reduces the need for fossil fuels, which reduces emissions. The use of these solar panels has already created a difference within Sonoma County and can do so in the rest of the world. The effects of utilizing other sources of power are evident. With the UN implementing this practice, we can improve upon those effects and move towards an energy-conscious society.

Solarizing the Future

Inspiration

While waiting in line at the gas station, John wondered what other, less harmful sources of power could exist. He was inspired by discovering solar energy, as he had been searching for a cleaner and healthier energy source to lessen reliance on age-old fossil fuels. He understood the impact that fossil fuels had on the environment and decided to take action. Though he had no idea where the business was going to take him when he started it, he was able to build a very successful organization.

Overall impact

From a short-term perspective, the innovation helps to reduce the reliance on fossil fuels and the overall carbon footprint, which is a requirement in California. The long-term effects of the innovation include the improved health of Californian residents due to using a cleaner energy source and less reliance on foreign entities for fuel. The implementation of this law in California and the difference it has made show promise that the rest of the world can follow the same path to a better and cleaner tomorrow. Additionally, the innovation actively participates in the community. Solar Works supports Community Alliance with Family Farmers and Slow Food Russian River to help better the community and the planet. The fact that this organization continues to grow shows that it is making a difference and reaching people. If that were not the case, many would not be so inclined to switch to solar energy.

Business benefit

Solar panels were only utilized by 1% of people with the common concern of high cost. People chose to put panels on their roof because they wanted to and were able to afford it. Now, solar panels are much more cost-efficient and more people are able to install them, which is especially true in places like Arizona that receive a lot of sunlight. Although the cost of installing solar panels may still seem high to some, they have a longer and better turnaround rate. In the long term, one would pay less for electricity bills, as their electricity would be provided by the sun. Additionally, users of solar panel energy help reduce their carbon footprint, making a difference in the world.

Social and environmental benefit

Solar Works' goal was to improve the environment by helping their customers become more energy self-reliant by meeting their energy needs efficiently, effectively, and in ways that are good for the planet. Solar Works helps society by ensuring that there are cost savings afforded to families by switching their electricity needs from fossil fuels to solar. Solar Works' mission statement is to "provide energy-efficient solutions that conserve natural resources and promote individual and community self-reliance." The environmental benefit of Solar Works is to reduce the reliance on fossil fuels, which leads to a reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases. At the same time, families can enjoy a lower monthly bill. Looking at it from both ends, it seems like a benefit at the end of the day for all parties involved. In witnessing Solar Works and many other solar power companies thrive, it is clear that switching over to using solar power from classic energy sources (oil, coal, and other fossil fuels) is advantageous.
