Summary

Today, Thibodaux Regional Health Systems has a large reach across our region, but it started in one doctor's home almost 100 years ago. The first true hospital building established in 1930 was known as St. Joseph Hospital and only had about 26 beds. On April 14th, 1975 St. Joseph Hospital closed its doors for a new Thibodaux General Hospital with 101-beds on 602 North Acadia Road. Today’s staff includes over 1200 employees with more than 250 physicians on medical staff.

Thibodaux Regional opened the doors of their Wellness Center in November of 2016. It happens to be the first of its kind in the region as it addresses wellness at every level, including prevention, education, & rehabilitation, combined with medically directed services. A phase 2 for a Wellness Center expansion is underway.

Innovation

The Wellness Center addresses Goal Three of the UN’s SDGs. The vision was pioneered and driven by CEO Greg Stock. His goal was to create a space for the community that serves the people in it. The Wellness Center is the opposite of a hospital. It is a place of sickness prevention. Exercise is crucial in preventing illness down the line such as high blood pressure or heart disease. Mr. Stock's purpose was to be a leader in not only healthcare but also wellness.

Inspiration

Greg Stock prides himself on being a visionary leader. The community surrounding the Thibodaux Region Health System is amongst the highest rated in preventable diseases. Greg Stock explained that, “Leaders need to have a vision. And that vision should be linked to your purpose and how it serves people.” This dedication of servitude to his community is exemplified by his commitment to keeping his community out of the hospital and into action. Greg Stock mentioned that this proactive approach to health is designed to “identify and reduce healthcare disparities based on demographic and social determinants of health factors and spoken and written language preferred for healthcare by patients and their legal guardians and the impact of those efforts.”

Overall impact

Since its opening in 2016, the Wellness Center has grown tremendously. In addition to several doctor's clinics, the Wellness Center holds a nutrition center, a large gym, an Olympic-sized swimming pool as well as a rehabilitation pool, and several volleyball/basketball courts. Phase two of development created a new outdoor space which includes a soccer/football field, track and field, sand courts for beach volleyball, clay tennis courts, and an outdoor basketball court.

There are several classes available in the pool area including water aerobics and swim classes. The Hydroworx therapy pool is utilized by the in-house rehabilitation office to get patients back on their feet at an accelerated pace due to the convenience and availability of state-of-the-art facilities.

The fitness center accommodates those with children by offering childcare in the space. This makes keeping up with one’s wellness more achievable for those who would normally be suffering from a poverty of time otherwise. They also offer education programs for those that are not familiar with the equipment which eases the intimidation of going to a gym. They also create individual fitness programs for new members if they want one.

In the last years, youth volleyball and basketball teams have been created with the goal of creating better opportunities for young athletes to receive the best training possible. Athletics often opens doors in higher education. By providing the community with a quality program with the best coaches the wellness center has the potential to create new pathways for the future of the communities youth. These are just a few of the programs in place at Thibodaux Regional’s Wellness Center that directly impact its community.

Business benefit

Thibodaux Regional Health System’s innovation in healthcare delivery and wellness services has significantly impacted the business by driving growth and enhancing its reputation. The organization prioritizes community health by implementing a comprehensive Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA), and because of this, it has been able to expand its services strategically. This facility addresses health challenges while also generating revenue by attracting patients and current members seeking wellness programs, creating a sustainable business model.

Thibodaux Regional has invested in innovative programs like WellFit and Partnerships with schools, and universities, and enhanced employee and community well-being while expanding its market reach. They sponsor different events like educating children, and healthy lifestyle choices which opened up engagement within the community while maintaining the organization's reputation and trust. These sponsorships have improved patient satisfaction and outcomes while keeping the employees actively engaged in the community. These business goals of improving health have consolidated its leadership position in the region, opened new markets within wellness care, and created growth opportunities.

Social and environmental benefit

Thibodaux Regional’s innovations have positively impacted society by addressing critical community health needs and improving overall well-being. The organization has developed targeted programs to overcome these challenges by prioritizing mental health, chronic diseases, etc. The wellness center provides resources for exercise, and preventative health empowering others to take control of their health which will reduce healthcare costs in the long run.

The intention within schools is to demonstrate a forward-thinking investment in the next generation. Thibodaux Regional promotes healthy habits from a young age, helping children while also positively impacting their families and communities. This created a strong foundation for lasting improvements in the overall community health. The organization helps reduce waste and ensures meaningful distribution of resources by supporting food banks and improving access to essential resources. This creates a positive image for Thibodaux Regional and extends beyond healthcare and improving the community.
