Inspiration

The story of Biotrailla began as a mix of necessity and inspiration for Spanish engineer Carlos Álvarez, Biotrailla’s manager. Facing an unsustainable lease that was jeopardizing the future of the family farm, Carlos sought a way to revive the business. He wanted to develop a model that not only brought financial stability but also embodied a commitment to sustainable agriculture. He recalls, “Biotrailla was born from a combination of necessity and a passion for sustainable agriculture.” However, it wasn’t just the need to create a new business model that drove Carlos; the farm’s natural bounty also inspired him.

Carlos told us in the interview that every Sunday, he would bring “boxes or bags of seasonal vegetables from the farm’s garden” back home to Zaragoza. The freshness, flavor, and quality of these vegetables struck him, as he explains: “I was continually amazed by how fresh, flavorful, and nourishing these vegetables were; they sustained us with quality nutrition throughout the week.” This experience sparked a vision in Carlos’ mind. He began to consider the possibility of scaling up this concept into a full-fledged business, allowing more people to enjoy sustainably grown, nutrient-rich vegetables produced directly from the farm.

This vision led to the official establishment of Biotrailla in 2009, long before the farm-to-table concept gained popularity in Spain. Carlos aimed to build a company that combined environmental responsibility with agricultural tradition, a philosophy that continues to guide Biotrailla’s operations. By focusing on eco-friendly practices, responsible resource use, and sustainable food production, Biotrailla has transformed into more than just a farm; it is a model for sustainable agriculture and a source of healthy food for the community.

Established in 1914 by Carlos Álvarez’s great-grandmother, Eufrasia, the farm has transformed over the decades, now encompassing 150 hectares dedicated to cultivating around 80 different seasonal products, including fruits, vegetables, cereals, legumes, and nuts.
