Summary

Papringan is no longer used as a village to dump garbage by local people, so the place is no longer dirty, smelly, and a source of disease for its surroundings. The business's effort in sharing knowledge, insight, and competence in processing bamboo into products with higher value is essential to create pride for the villagers.

Innovation

Spedagi is a famous brand name for bikes made of bamboo. It is inspired by the morning bike-routine activities by Singgih Susilo Kartono every morning around the streets of Kandangan Village, Temanggung. Spedagi becomes the icon for the village revitalization movement.

Singgih Susilo Kartono is the man behind the success story of bamboo bike. He is a designer graduated from ITB in 1992, who chose to return to the village rather than work in the city. Together with his team, he worked hard for his 'dreams' of promoting Bamboo. Year 2012, is the birth of the spedagi movement which revives the village. The bamboo bike becomes the mascot of the village. He also held the International Conference on Village Revitalization's first biennial conference in Kandangan in the year 2014.

From my interview with Singgih Kartono, he told me that it has all started when he was riding his bamboo bike as usual in the morning on his normal route everyday. He told me that In the past, the road was narrow, and full with rugged stones. He just realized that the place looks like a bamboo tunnel. The location is called Papringan. People dumped their waste to this place. Its dark, dirty, and looks like an unwanted place. But he knew bamboo is the future mascot. And he started to build his dream of a bamboo haven.

Bamboo

Inspiration

Village is a perfect answer to the future life where ideal living is defined as a life where people can fulfill their physical, social, and spiritual needs in balance by living in a way that minimizes the negative impacts towards nature. Living in a small community where most of the living needs can be fulfilled from the nearest resources will not only minimize the carbon emission, but also develop the awareness of nature.

Bamboo as an amazing material is truly a beneficial material in the village. The effort in sharing knowledge, insight, and the competence in processing bamboo into a product with higher value is essential to create a new source of pride for the villagers.

Overall impact

Papringan Market Idea is the preservation of bamboo gardens. "We want to inspire many people, to our own citizens, and outsiders. Actually, it has inspired many people. Some had created something similar like this in a much wider area. Here, it's only 1,200 meters. Interestingly, from this very small field we can actually make something very positive".

Business benefit

Started In the land of approximately 25 × 75 meters there were at least 20 sellers. There are handicraft, culinary, and farm products. Handicrafts include batik, bamboo products, magno, merchandises. Culinary offerings such as kupat tahu, gudeg, soup, coffee and herbal medicine. Agricultural products are organic, mushroom and ornamental plants. Singgih shows that village products are generally eco-products, can be of high value. Engkrak or serok garbage collector from bamboo with a touch of creativity can be sold at multiple prices.

And the latest information that I had during the interview there are now around 86 sellers from the community nearby or the villagers of Ngadiprono. There are 200 family in the village, and 99% was getting involved in the morning market until today. One year ago Caruban Village, was not widely known. Thanks to Papringan Market, this village is now the subject of conversation, especially among young people through social media. Ministers, governors, celebrities took time to come and visit. There are about 13,000 content on the internet associated with Papringan Market through the Google search engine

Social and environmental benefit

Papringan market place is a way to uphold the value of bamboo clump by utilizing it into a market for local products without hampering the bamboo clump itself. Bamboo clumps in Indonesia usually grow with spaces in between. These spaces makes a shady atmosphere. These empty spaces are designed into a cleaner area with ease of maintenance while still lets the bamboo clump grows naturally can help to make a unique atmosphere of Pasar Papringan.

As Singgih said, "the village promise a better quality of life. Carbon emissions can be pushed as low as possible. It is very easy to obtain healthy food from nearby sources. One can generate energy through the renewable energy options and of course build good social relationships."
