Summary

Chancellors Way Medical Arts Centre is a medical centre located at the University of Guelph which is made up of different professionals and health services who work together to prove the best quality of health care for their community. The centre is also a 'green' medical centre and is environmentally conscious and has many features put in place to help the city of Guelph take pride in its green initiatives. Chancellor's Way Medical Centre staff work together to achieve the goals of clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, and responsible consumption and production.

Innovation

Chancellors Way Medical Arts Centre is a public access medical centre at the University of Guelph, which offers services in dental, dermatology, pharmacy and psychotherapy. The medical centre aspires to deliver the highest quality of health care and uses a system which promotes collaboration, deep discussion and service integration by following the community health hub model of care. This model also aims to provide the right service, at the right time, by the right people.

The building is also one of the contributions to the innovations of the centre as it was built with sustainability and environmental goals in mind. The centre is eco-friendly and consistently aims to make a difference in the work environment and university community.

The innovation of the centre is not only to create a space which is environmentally friendly, calming and relaxing to patients but is also a collaboration amongst the different health care services the centre offers. The project is based on the idea that the health care practitioners put the service to their patients at the top of their business model.

Chancellors Way's mission statement is to serve the community with leadership, exceptional care, and compassion.

"The building design and our model of care through collaboration is the result of this mission."

Much More Than a Simple Medical Centre

Inspiration

Dr. Luke Boudreau and Dr. Ian MacPhee are the two founders of the Chancellors Way Medical Arts Centre. Dr. MacPhee is the Chief Executive Officer of the centre, and he and his associate, Dr. Boudreau, created the team approach to health care. Dr. Boudreau and Dr. MacPhee had originally planned to create the centre in downtown Guelph, however, as the university was looking to create innovative projects and have collaborations, they believed this was the perfect partnership.

The inspiration behind Chancellors Way was to design a public medical centre that could also serve the university, but offer more than the usual medical centre. The centre is unique in that the professionals work together to provide the highest quality of medical care within an environmentally friendly building.

"Dr. Boudreau and Dr. MacPhee have created such a positive vibe and sense that people feel when they walk into this building. It feels uplifting and it feels positive."

Overall impact

The main impact of the innovation is that the centre creates efficient and high-quality care for their patients in a sustainable environment. Each professional abides by the Chancellors Way model which was created to optimize the health of the patients where the patients feel that their beliefs and opinions about their health are important and are also incorporated into their health care. Chancellors Way is also not just about the "medicine", they purposefully offer different programs and workshops to their community such as stress reduction, various workshops, and a psychologist is also on site.

Furthermore, the medical centre also takes part in helping the city of Guelph stay green. The centre uses LED lighting, a high-efficiency HVAC system and a rooftop rain collection system feeding an on-site rain garden, amongst others. Also, the centre's landscape is also environmentally friendly as they use hearty plants which means they do not have to be watered often.

Feedback from their patients has been very positive: "I know that when our patients come here for the first time, they leave with a different feeling about the place and they want to come back. They want to be patients of this facility".

Business benefit

The main business benefit for Chancellors Way is knowing that they have helped patients and offered them care and help to the best of their ability. They truly care if their patients are feeling relaxed, comfortable and if they are willing to go back.

Also, as the medical centre is focused around the community health hub model of care, this allows Chancellors Medical Centre to stand out and be unique from other medical centres. However, Chancellors Way Medical Arts Centre hopes that their model will spread to other places because most medical centres in Guelph and around this whole region do not operate like this.

Social and environmental benefit

Chancellors Way Medical Arts Centre ultimately benefits society as they are providing patients with the highest quality of help and care. Although the centre is a medical centre, it is also a place where people can go at any time to see a friendly face and is an environment where they can 'feel at home.'

The centre benefits the environment in that the building is eco-friendly. For example, every light in the building are LED lights which initially are more expensive to purchase but save a large amount of energy in the long-run. Also, the centre's heating and cooling system are based on intelligent feedback systems. There are sensors on different sides of the centre which only cools or heats individual zones in the building based on the temperature. These efforts highlight the extent to which the centre is trying to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The centre was built with the idea of sustainability in mind: spending more but having long-term benefits.
