Brown Rice - The Gift of Nature

Khai Minh is a company which provides organic foods to customers who want to have a healthy life. According to the founder - Mr Vien, a long time ago Vietnamese ancients highlighted the importance of eating through idioms such as “Learn how to eat, learn how to speak, learn how to wrap, learn how to open” and bedtime stories, for example Lang Lieu King. It was said that Lang Lieu, prince of the Hung Dynasty, presented “banh chung” and “banh day” cakes made from rice and green beans to his father. After that, he was selected as a king because the father knew that his son was aware of the importance of rice and seeds.

However, this awareness has now disappeared. With the desire of reviving it, Khai Minh was established to enhance the awareness of qualitative eating in this fast-moving world. When eating clean vegetarian food cooked with the macrobiotic process during a long time, consumers would feel the difference in their body and soul. The body feels healthier and lighter while the mind is at peace. For those who do not have the possibility to go to the restaurant, Khai Minh also holds some cooking classes with the hope that many people follow the macrobiotics principles. Besides, brown rice flour is sold at Khai Minh restaurant for those who cannot cook. To have the best effect, Khai Minh offers meditation classes and consultancy, and talk shows, led by Mr. Vien, who is also an oriental doctor.

The Production of White Charcoal Among Homesteader in Kalimantan

As Mr. Nurwanto established CV Nusa Alam Gemilang in 2014, he began to use Japanese oven technology to produce white charcoal (binchotan), from the forest trees in Center Kalimantan.

The Production of White Charcoal could reduce the fire forests in Kalimantan because it needs the tree as raw materials which used to be burnt for palm oil production. So it's better to burn the trees in the charcoal oven than burn the trees in the forest land because burning trees in the forest land can cause the forest fire. Burning the trees in to the white charcoal oven is more sustainable because less of the tree is needed; just cut down some of the the tree's branches and deliver to the white charcoal oven to be burnt.

The production of white charcoal changed the homesteaders' ("Transmigran") profession, from palm oil farm workers to be white charcoal producers because this charcoal was exported to Japan and Middle Eastern Countries with a decent price which increased their life prosperity.

Looks Like Plastic, But It’s Not Plastic

Based on study published in the journal Science led by Jenna Jamback from the University of Georgia released on 2010, Indonesia produces 3.2 million tons of plastic waste in 2010 with around 1.29 million tons of that ending up in the ocean, it ranks second only to China as the world’s largest plastic polluter.

This plastic waste causes problems, for instance clogged waterways and drainage systems cause floods in urban areas after rainfalls, causing health problems such as malaria and other water borne diseases. Plastic waste also threatened marine life, hurting the country’s fishing and tourism industries, a reason for tourists to avoid these places.

In year 2016, their government regulated scheme that limited to formal retailers at first, to reduce the total plastic waste produced in Indonesia which regulate supermarkets and retailers to set the price for each plastic bag at between Rp200 ($0.01) and Rp500.
