Power to the Plant and People

Plant&People was developed by a Black mother and daughter plant-loving duo, who aspire to share their passion for plant life and support their hometown community of West Philadelphia by providing wellness and self-care tools. With SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) in mind, Plant&People believes that the addition of plants into one's lifestyle, combined with the nurturing of plants, can offer alternatives to the management of stress and mental illness; both of which have long-lasting impacts on the community they serve. SDGs 10 and 11 (Reduced Inequalities and Sustainable Cities and Communities) also drive the mission of Plant&People, whose owners note the absence of plant nurseries and wellness spots in Black communities. Co-Owners Cherron and Amma strive to answer the question "why do we always have to leave our communities to heal?"

See & Spray Select

The See & Spray™ Select system benefits society in a multitude of ways. The innovation aligns with the Life on Land sustainable development goal from the United Nations. The system reduces the number of herbicides used by farmers by only targeting weeds and not spraying unnecessary areas in the field. Thi system helps “Life on Land” because herbicides can affect the ecosystem. Organisms can ingest these herbicides, and the toxins can then travel up the food chain via consumption. As a result, larger animals such as birds and mammals accumulate the toxins in higher concentrations. By reducing herbicides, the negative impact on life reduces significantly.

This company generates jobs in the communities that are part of the biosphere reserve through the tours. Not only do they receive economic retribution, but they also provide continuous training to each of their strategic allies for mutual benefit such as valuing their product, having a fair price and not undervaluing it, labeling the origin of the products, following protocols for the food, and among other things so that the service is adequate and they are enriched with new knowledge. In addition to continuing environmental education, working in family gardens and plantations of native plants instills gratitude for the land, which influences the creation of local leaders and guardians of their natural resources.

What makes this organization different is the human treatment; visitors have repeated the experience several times due to the quality of the service. These actions are achieved by conducting environmental education courses in schools in the area and continuing training for its business partners, contributing to quality education (4- quality education), and generating sources of work and reasonable remuneration through the tour (8 - decent job and economic growth) in the populations that make up the biosphere reserve. In turn, responsible production and consumption are generated through family gardens and respecting their natural resources (12-responsible consumption and production), taking into account respect and gratitude for the land (15- the life of terrestrial ecosystems) to continue preserving its wealth. Naturally, this is achieved through alliances with business partners from the visited regions (17 - Alliances to achieve the Goals).

Luxurious Fish, Luxurious Habits

The innovation that Pederson had was quite simple: create a world where fish could be farmed, sold, and eaten with good business and natural ethics. The innovation emerged when Pederson realized his passion for not only fishing, but the ocean environment as a whole. The innovation became a reality once he built an aquarium system in his basement using his wife's crystal salad bowl.

In our interview, Pederson explained “My wife believed that I was willing to test our marriage by using her crystal salad bowl… that was the turning point to becoming fully invested into the company.” Pederson used his resources and contacted Pentaire, a pool and spa equipment company that helps maintain these areas and ensure a safe and healthy environment. He wanted to use these water treatment practices for aquaculture. Sooner than later, the two committed to the industry in 2016, began building a facility, started stocking fish in 2017, and selling fish in 2018.

“We are not farmers, we are food producers, marketers, and distributors.” Pederson uses this innovation to be different from his competitors and innovate a new and improved level of farming that distributes luxurious fish while using aquaculture habits that are environmentally and economically ethical.
