Saving water, saving lives

The founders of Stattus4 always wanted to have a business as entrepreneurs that: “as the business gets more successful (in terms of growth and profitability) the more benefits society and the environment will also receive”, as described by the CEO Marilia Lara Marcondes Machado de Oliveira.

The dream started to become reality in 2015 when the founders of Stattus4 worked on the development of an electronic geophone at the previous company they worked for. During the test period, the founders of Stattus4 identified that the work of listening to the electronic geophone was really hard, in the context of a street in Brazil: People talking, loud noise from cars and buses, dogs barking, etc.

Having some knowledge about artificial intelligence they developed a way to use technology to review the sounds collected by the electronic geophone, analyze that, and provide a diagnosis, isolating the other sounds and human error. With that idea they started to research hydraulic issues in Brazil and realized that it was a huge problem, generating large social impact.

Today Stattus4 is a result of this dream, experience and research. A technology startup engaged in building smart cities and sustainability, collecting and understanding natural resource data and making it available to more people.

The planet has been affected by the excessive manufacture of plastics for consumption that seems to never end. As of today, the planet is home to more than 8,300 million tons of plastic, of which 97% end up in rivers and landfills, polluting the environment.

Local inequality problems in Colombia have also increased rapidly, increasing unemployment and increasing poverty. Certain populations, including the nation's many indigenous communities, do not have adequate access to jobs and resources to survive. These communities are characterized by having mothers heads of households in charge of watching over each of their families.

It is a challenge for enterprises like sajú, to face these problems and generate a positive impact on society and the environment. It is in this way that Sajú decided to create alliances with indigenous communities and their mothers heads of families to employ them in the area of production of their accessories. In addition, these alliances for the creation of each collection, provide recognition to each of the populations involved - recognition that is traced through the designs of each of its collections of frames and accessories.

"We like to support communities and in each collection we try to put a component, an added value that makes us feel proud."

On the other hand, to face and reduce plastic pollution in the environment, sajú decided to manufacture its products from recycled plastics.

Phenomena such as climate change and the accelerated expansion of pollution makes it essential to accelerate the progress of projects from alternative and renewable sources, whose greatest potential is represented in inexhaustible resources.

Salt water is abundant covering 73% of the earth's surface. According to the article at elagoradiario.com we have a water availability of 1,386 million cubic kilometers, of which 97.5% is salt water and only 2.5% is fresh water (35 million cubic kilometers). Transforming Waste to Products with Design

INDUECON is a recycling company located in Palmira, near Cali, Colombia. They transform plastic waste into real usable products at reasonable prices, from orchards to outdoor playgrounds. Since its foundation they've focused on three key aspects which are clearly stated within the company’s mission and vision. As they mention it, they are focused on transforming the behaviors, the people, and the plastic. They work with and employ people from within a very poor sector of the community, specifically social stratum 0 and 1 from a total of 6 stratums; where stratum 6 are the wealthiest people of the community and 0 are the poorest (this is a social classification use in Colombia for all public services and residence location)

The Behaviors: Most of the people don’t have a mindset of recycling and/or thinking twice before buying products that come in low-sustainable packaging, most commonly several types of plastics. What INDUECON does is give people more knowledge of the consequences from having an unsustainable lifestyle and provide them training and possible tools to minimize this lifestyle and change their perceptions and behaviors towards these types of products, increasing awareness regarding environmental issues in social media, workshops and courses.

The People: They employ several people to work with them with activities related to building their final products. They currently employ 14 people. Some of these people who are employed thrive to survive in a community plagued with problems related to general crime, no steady income, and young mothers with children that have never known about the concept of having: a steady income, certain benefits, vacations, etc., since most of their lives they have been either unemployed not necessarily because they didn’t want to, but because the opportunities present in the community didn’t give them access to it.

The Plastic: The idea they have behind this is to give plastic another chance of becoming something useful in our lives. Instead of saturating the national garbage dumps with plastics or throwing this waste into the ocean and in the end having harmful effects for us, they focus on transforming plastic in its several forms into many kinds of final products for different purposes, such as for decoration in the house or in the office or within farms, playgrounds and in other places. They have a big catalogue with their products, for example, they have shelves, organizers, pots, benches, tables and even playground buildings for small children, all made with this plastic they use as input.
