Pasar Sejahtera

Bank Danamon, thorugh the Danamon Peduli Foundation, launched a Corporate Social Responsibility program called "Pasar Sejahtera" aimed at improving the cleanliness, hygiene, and performance quality of traditional wet markets, and also to improve capacity building of Micro-Small-Medium Enterprises throughout traditional markets in Indonesia. This program creates sustainable development of the marketplace community; at the end improved lifestyle and in turn can generate wealth for the community.

The traditional market is part of the history of Indonesian civilization and population. Further, it is also a public place where the majority of the population meet each other on daily basis. In the suburbs, traditional markets are the backbone of the local economy.

Most traditional wet markets are dirty and unpleasant, especially in the area of meat and fish stalls. Cleanliness and hygiene factors are overlooked and make people nowadays reluctant to visit traditional markets anymore.

“Over the past few years, the traditional markets have been facing severe competition from the modern retail shops — swalayan, supermarkets and mini markets. There was no other way to survive, except to strengthen the traditional market’s competitive edge by improving its conditions, such as cleanliness, hygiene, and convenience,” said Mrs Restu Pratiwi, The Executive Director – Danamon Peduli Foundation.

Preventive Healthcare With an On-field MR Machine

General Electric (GE) Healthcare, a subsidiary of GE, has collaborated with a multitude of organizations to create a Magnetic Resonance (MR) machine designed for the National Football League (NFL) to detect concussions. I was fortunate enough to talk with Barry Black, a key innovator and head in the MR division at GE in Milwaukee about this innovation and its future implications for not only the NFL but for multitudes of people worldwide. In fact, one of the leading problems in road traffic accidents is concussions. Concussions, as an invisible injury, often leads to neurological problems and unpredictable deaths. With the ongoing concussion research and the creation of this device, many lives would be saved. This work by GE impacts the UN's goal to halve the number of global deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents by 2020. I was also fortunate enough to gain additional insights of this work from a GE engineer perspective via Namratha Reganti.
