Creating Energy from Waste

Organic waste comes in many forms, agricultural, food, sewage, and usually it gets thrown in landfills or incinerated, but who says organic waste has to be wasted? What if our organic waste could be turned into energy that could power our future homes, farms, or even cities? The company quasar energy group, which uses lower case letters in their name, is using our waste to create clean, natural gas energy through a process called anaerobic digestion. The company quasar energy group builds and operates waste-to-energy facilities in Ohio, Massachusetts and New York.

Sustainable Coffee: From the "Grounds" Up

It is widely estimated that more than 2.25 billion cups of coffee are consumed in the world EVERY DAY. That incredible number makes coffee the second most valuable commodity export in the world, only behind crude oil.

Yet, the 25 million small producers that rely on coffee for a living only see a fraction of that value and are handcuffed by a volatile global coffee market.

But over the past few decades, the desire for specialty coffee has taken root and is transforming the market. Once considered solely a commodity—an economic good where demand has no qualitative differentiation across a market—the “third wave” of coffee has created a specialty market where variety, quality, transparency and traceability is highly valued.

This trend in the market is better for farmers as fair trade certifications have been established, ensuring farmers more money for their crop, but Café Nor—an economically viable, and socially and environmentally sustainable coffee company out of Matagalpa, Nicaragua—is working to do much more.

Café Nor focuses on giving technical assistance for improvement of production output, sustainable farming and certification in order to improve the socio-economic and environmental sustainability of the participating farmers and their communities.

These efforts not only give farmers above fair trade prices for their goods, but also the opportunity to learn the broader scope of the international business and give opportunities for Nicaraguans to develop their owns businesses with access to micro-financing in an industry mostly owned by Europeans.

Lighting a Brighter Future

Cleanlife Energy's purpose is to provide custom LED technology to businesses and niche markets too small for major light manufacturers, such as General Electric and Philips, to service.

The company's primary clients include vending, gaming, signage, food service, and the aftermarket automotive industry. These businesses require lights in specialized sizes and smaller batches, which scares away many major suppliers of LED lights. Because of Cleanlife's presence in the market, these industries are switching from power-hungry and pollutant-rich fluorescent light bulbs to LED's.

Curl Calls

Kaleidoscopic Kurls is a for profit company which hosts community events at a minimal charge in order to enlighten the South Florida community about the effects of the consumption of chemical products on the human scalp such as hair relaxers and hair dyes. This company has definitely made strides in the community by helping a lot of women turn from chemical processes in order to better their overall health and the community as a whole. I myself am an employee at Kaleidoscopic Kurls and partner with many of the other local companies with the same goal in mind such as Mimi's Hair Salon, Shea Moisture, Alikay Naturals, and Thank God I'm Natural to name a few. The ultimate goal is to educate the community on good health and well being practices, facilitate programs which provide quality education to urban rural areas, educate women on the potential hazards of hair chemical processes, all while making sure that inequalities for all people are not to be tolerated and working to reverse the impacts on behaviors which continue to be perpetuated.

According to naturallycurly.com, By definition, a hair relaxer is a lotion or cream that makes the hair easier to straighten and manage. It reduces the curl by breaking down the hair strand and chemically altering the texture (Gonzalez, 2010). The definition could be a bit deceiving for it says a relaxer is a lotion, but this is no typical lotion because the main ingredient in a relaxer is sodium hydroxide. Sodium hydroxide has many adverse effects when it interacts with just about anything skin and the environment included. Starting with the body, according to epa.com, Sodium hydroxide is a very corrosive substance and is extremely irritant to skin contact, ingestion, eye contact and inhalation. It can cause severe burns and damage to any tissues of the body because there are two things that cause sodium hydroxide to damage the skin. Firstly, the reaction of sodium hydroxide with moisture generates heat and causes thermal burns. Secondly, the reaction of sodium hydroxide with organic molecules result in chemical burns (Joye, 2010).

Even more fascinating and devastating is the effect sodium hydroxide has on our environment, according to epa.gov, Sodium hydroxide exposed in the atmosphere could be very dangerous since it readily reacts with other chemicals since it is subject to wet deposition . It can readily react with water vapour in the air and produce aerosol or mist which are very corrosive. Concentrated aerosol compounds (silica, asbestos and etc) may result in a number of diseases such as silicosis and black lung when exposed to it since it can severely irritate upper respiratory tracts (Joye, 2010). “ I was completely blown away!” said Mireille. As I interviewed her I was actually blown away too. I had no idea a hair “lotion” could reek such havoc upon a consumers body and the environment.

Knitting Economic Impact Into Communities

Plastic bags litter the streets and fields of Cambodia - posing a threat to the health and well-being of humans and livestock. It can take decades, if not longer, for a single plastic bag to decay. FunkyJunkRecycled repurposes plastic bags by partnering with local communities, whose citizens are trained to sanitize the plastic, cut it into strips, and knit it into products - bags and household goods - that are sold as fair trade products internationally.

The World's First Braille Smartwatch

If the whole population of the world is 100, then about 4 people are visually impaired, and 0.7 people are totally blind. There are 285 million visually impaired people in the world and 39 million are totally blind. If there are 100 books in the world, only one book is translated into Braille. If there are 100 visually impaired people who need Braille readers, only five of them have the readers. If there are 100 visually impaired people who can be better connected to the world by knowing Braille, only ten of them know Braille.

Who can solve this problem? Dot Inc. founded by Eric Ju Yoon Kim, a young entrepreneur based in Seoul, Korea is nearly solving the problem and is about to launch the first Braille smartwatch in the world at an affordable price of USD 290.
