Mowilex Indonesia is a chemical manufacturing company founded in 1970 based in Jakarta, Indonesia. Mowilex is a leading producer of premium paints and coating, and since first introduced, the company has received numerous awards and accolades over the years. They have taken a groundbreaking approach in their sustainability mission, and in the manufacturing industry. Mowilex became the first certified carbon neutral company in Indonesia, in 2019, and to this day is the only certified carbon neutral company in Indonesia. Their work aligns directly with UN SDG 13: Climate Action, through carbon neutrality and proactive environmental initiatives that reduce pollution and energy consumption. Additionally, their efforts support SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production by focusing on transitioning from petroleum-based to water-based products and minimizing waste in operations.

As a result, they set a high standard for environmental sustainability and ethical responsibility. We had the opportunity to interview the Chairman of Mowilex, Francesco R. Safavi, and in turn we were able to gather many insights about the company and their innovation.

Pioneering Sustainability in the Advertising Industry

In a significant move toward environmental stewardship, OpenX has distinguished itself as the first ad-tech company to achieve carbon neutrality. This groundbreaking initiative is part of the company's broader commitment to sustainability and corporate responsibility. The journey to carbon neutrality involved a comprehensive review of OpenX’s greenhouse gas emissions, including emissions from cloud services, office spaces, business travel, and even employee commuting. While OpenX has been a leader in reducing their carbon emissions, the company invested in a series of high-quality carbon removal projects in order to offset their residual carbon emissions. These projects neutralize the company’s carbon output and also contribute to global environmental conservation efforts through nature-based solutions.

The work of OpenX aligns to 3 of the UN SDGs. First, by working to reduce carbon emissions of those using the platform, and their own footprint, OpenX algins with SDG 13 and the call for urgent action to stop degradation of the environment. Second, but working with the advertising sector and raising awareness of the SDGs, they can influence beyond climate impact to sustainable consumption and production (SDG 12). The ad industry has a significant influence on consumers and can help promote a circular economy in which products and materials are designed in such a way that they can be reused, remanufactured, recycled or recovered and thus maintained in the economy for as long as possible. Finally, OpenX is seeking to encourage other exchanges and platforms to follow their lead and partner with them on sustainability, thus working on SDG 17 and strengthening the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.
