On every cutting of material, Tulisan always tends to make it efficient in any possible way. They also use recycled material for their inner materials. But there's more innovation in colouring sections.

Tulisan created large screens that make the process impossible for consistent colour application. These large screens require two serigraph technicians to apply the pigment in synchronisation. One needs to trust and be brave to let go. The other needs to be reliable and vigilant in every print setting. Our open-air studio provides an unpredictable humidity level and disturbing dust particles, so there is always a tendency for 1-2 cm shrinkage in every colour application. The set-up of the studio prompts another challenge for registering the layers of colour. They can never predict what they get from one printing process, and they always need to have the agility to make adjustments when printing the next colour set.
Tulisan uses water-based pigments, certified environmental-friendly inks, and binders which are the best quality components available for this industry.
Melissa Sunjaya is the founding artist and CEO of Tulisan. It is her long-term dream to create handmade products in Indonesia with an original twist. Tulisan is an honest and clean company that is dedicated to empowering others, celebrating individuality, and caring for our world. Every product in Tulisan designs is also underlined to always use eco-friendly materials, sustainable methods, and fair work ethics. The organizational structure has been designed to reflect a guild that accommodates artists from different disciplines and honours all forms of art from illustration, literature, music, cinematography, dance, ceramic to woodwork. The manufacturing methodology has been planned carefully to showcase Indonesia’s finest artisanal craftsmanship and excellence in production process quality. The design principles of their base products have always been simple and pure, which appeal to a universal audience.
Tulisan is designed and made in Jakarta by Indonesians. Melissa built her team slowly and organically, by selecting willful individuals who honour their intuitions and follow their hearts. Many of them have crossed over from their academic or professional background to doing what they do today for Tulisan. Together they empower each other to do things that they never thought were possible to do. With this groundwork set in motion, Tulisan is preparing a blueprint for a stage that is ocean deep. A stage where a label imprinting ‘Jakarta’ will tell a different story about this city and will be a spotlight witnessed by many nations for the first time in history.
1. No Poverty & Good Health and Well Being : Pepe is designed by Tulisan as a sustainable project, made by the children of the streets for themselves. Tulisan conducts art workshops for a group of children from Kampus Diakonia Modern (KDM) who have committed their time to this projects in hope that this entrepreneurial experience will give them inspiration and confidence to be independent.
All profits of each Pepe doll will be donated to Kampus Diakonia Modern (KDM), a nonprofit foundation dedicated to rescuing the children of the street in Jakarta since 1972. Every year they save a number of deserted children of the street – some are orphans, some run away from home and many are victims of child abuse and exploitation. The sale of each doll provides a child at KDM with, a proper meal for five days, a week of schooling, 6 months’ worth of learning materials, or ten visits to the local healthcare centre. All sales proceeds benefit the welfare of these misfortuned children who are sheltered under KDM.
2. Decent Work and Economic Growth : Tulisan trying to upgrade the dignity of Jakarta’s serigraph industry. They hope to bring forth a new podium for ‘serigraph in Jakarta’, where it becomes a stage for dignified skill, ethical job, and artistic merit.
3. Reduced Inequality : TULISAN AIR 2020 (TULISAN Artist In Residence) is a program dedicated to creating a sustainable cycle of art editions for aspiring artists. Their core objective is to support and nurture the artist’s potential during this residency period. Tulisan curate the artwork to manifest a collection of limited edition prints, from Giclée to other wearable art pieces which light our homes and delight our souls. Farand Rasyid Hazfanur is a gifted young painter with a Cerebral Palsy disability. Cerebral Palsy does not prevent Farand Rasyid Hazfanur from augmenting his talents in contemporary art. This birth condition prompts severe life challenges. Farand endures disabilities in mobilising almost all of his body parts and in speaking. Despite these difficulties, Farand discovers his passion for painting. He became a Tulisan artist in residence in 2020.
4. Responsible Consumption & Production : Every product in Tulisan designs is also underlined to always use eco-friendly materials, sustainable methods, and fair work ethics.
Because the business established eco-friendly processing and made an impact on the artist communities and their society, these good things have happened:
NGULIK TransTV, September 2 2012 : It is a weekend feature show on one of Indonesia’s national TV channels, Trans TV.
The Peak, May 2012 : An interview with Geraldine Tan for a local magazine.
The Ernst & Young Entrepreneurial Winning Women 2013, October 2013 : An award for a national competition and executive leadership program to help accelerate the growth of female-led businesses.

Tulisan constantly trying to upgrade the dignity of Jakarta’s serigraph industry. They hope to bring forth a new podium for ‘serigraph in Jakarta’, where it becomes a stage for dignified skill, ethical job, and artistic merit.
They also constantly use eco-friendly materials in their production and they had international certification from Bluesign. A small part of Tulisan dream has come true, but the journey is not over yet.

We might hear top global brands that care about communities and the environment. But, a local brand that endorses and does all those things is rare. Tulisan begins as a home-based art studio in Jakarta filled with dedicated people who simply believed in each other and were determined to follow their dreams. We can see the passion from every line stroke of traditional and contemporary elements that come from varying cultures in their work. That kind of expression started the communication on how this brand wanted to be known. The conversation would lead us to the values of empowering others, celebrating individuality, and caring for our world. Those values do not stop as a tagline only, but also create innovation and inspire their customer. From using zero waste and eco-friendly material to collaborating with disabled local artists, Tulisan impacted the community more than they made a profit from their business.
