As indicated by Mr. Álvaro Vasquez in the interview, the innovation of his product is due 100% to the sustainable development approach in order to avoid the felling of trees and damage to the environment with the pollution produced by wanting to dispose of the stems of hydrangea, which are the input for the manufacture and commercialization of ecological pallets made from highly polluting agricultural waste.

The manufacturing process of the same begins with the collection of the hydrangea stems which are waste from the flower produced. They are crushed and molded under pressure adapting a shape that has more than 15 competitive advantages:

Tal cual como lo indico el señor Álvaro Vasquez en la entrevista "la innovación de su producto se debe 100% al enfoque de desarrollo sostenible con la finalidad de evitar la tala de árboles y daño al medio ambiente con la polución producida al querer desechar los tallos de hortensia, los cuales son el insumo de la fabricación y comercialización de estibas ecológicas fabricadas a partir de desechos agrícolas altamente contaminantes."

El proceso de fabricación de la misma inicia con la recolección de los tallos de hortensia los cuales son desechos de la flor producida, los mismos se trituran y se moldean a presión adaptando una forma que cuenta con más de 15 ventajas competitivas:

Inspiration

According to an interview with Mr. Álvaro Vásquez, Manager and CEO of the Bioestibas company, he indicates that the initiative was born “One day he was in the municipality of Carmen de Viboral located in eastern Antioquia with his respective friends and they evidenced how a truck was full of flowers that are grown in the area and they come to ask the floriculturists what they did with the stem of these flowers and they indicated that it was to be discarded because it represented high costs ”, that's where it was discovered that this material was the ideal for what they wanted to do.

Bioestibas is the third company of five that its manager Mr. Álvaro Vásquez has currently founded. A previous undertaking was born from Bioflu, which is in charge of cleaning bodies of water such as reservoirs and lakes. They collect plants or weeds, which were a big problem due to their large-scale reproduction. Since they did not know what they could do with said collected material, they began a research process in different countries to determine what they could do with that buchón and found 11 possible applications, as well as a new market niche that was the elaboration of pallets with Biomass.

It is worth mentioning that the businesses of the Vásquez family must comply with four self-imposed rules that make the innovation valid, different (principle of differentiation), large or rapidly scalable, environmentally perfect, and finally profitable.

Según entrevista realizada con el señor Álvaro Vásquez Gerente y CEO de la compañía Bioestibas indica que la iniciativa nació “ Un día se encontraba en el municipio de Carmen de Viboral ubicado en el oriente antioqueño con sus respectivos amigos y evidenciaron como un camión se encontraba colmado de flores que se cultivan en la zona y se acercan a preguntar a los floricultores que hacían con el tallo de estas flores e indicaron que era un encarte para desecharlo pues representaba costos elevados”, ahí fue donde se descubrió que ese material era el idóneo para lo que querían hacer.

Bioestibas es la tercera empresa de cinco que actualmente ha fundado su gerente el señor Álvaro Vásquez, nace a partir de Bioflu un emprendimiento previo el cual se encarga de la limpieza de cuerpos de agua como embalses y lagos, esto por medio de la recolección de plantas o malezas, las cuales eran un problema grande por su reproducción a gran escala, al desconocer que podían hacer con dicho material recolectado, inician un proceso de investigación en diferentes países para determinar que podían realizar con ese buchón, encontrando 11 posibles aplicaciones, como también un nuevo nicho de mercado que era la elaboración de estibas con Biomasa.

Cabe mencionar que los emprendimientos de la familia Vásquez deben cumplir con cuatro reglas autoimpuestas que hace que la innovación tenga validez, que sea diferente (principio de la diferenciación), grandes o rápidamente escalables, ambientalmente perfectos y por último que sean rentables.

Bioestibas is ensuring the active participation of all women from eastern Antioquia, allowing equal participation in the collection and distribution process. Currently mothers who are heads of the family are benefiting from this activity and are entering the world to work for former guerrillas after the signing of the peace agreement.

Bioestibas contributes to economic growth in the department of Antioquia. Currently 1,100 families are benefiting from safe, full, and active job with representative pay that allows for professional and personal growth and a future to linking people to the world labor due to its innovative process producing hydrangea pallets.

Bioestibas is an innovative and competitive company in this market. It is always in search of new technologies. Through three factories in China it was possible to have knowledge of the production operations of this type of pallets and put it into operation to create new products and be at the forefront of sustainable development issues in Colombia.

By generating employment, Bioestibas allows the community to have an adequate quality of life in terms of health, food housing, among other factors that contribute to making it more sustainable.

With the collection of hydrangea stems that make approximately 250 tons (month) for the elaboration of their products, Biosestibas contributes to the environment since currently hydrangea stems are incinerated by floriculturists in order to dispose of them, which causes enormous environmental pollution.

Bioestibas contributes to preventing the felling of more than 775 trees and the emission of 1,260 tons of greenhouse gases, therefore, it contributes to a better ecosystem since it produces products with recycled materials or waste (hydrangea stems).

Social and environmental benefit

The benefits of innovation are diverse, both in the society and the environment.

• Bioestibas is currently carrying out the process of collecting 90 tons of hydrangea stems from crops in the eastern Antioquia region (La Ceja), generating an economic benefit for flower growers that reduced the costs of the final disposal of organic material by 75% and the environmental problems that this burning generates.

• A clear example of benefits present in innovation is the contribution made by two companies that belong to the business group of which Mr. Álvaro Vásquez is founder and manager, they generate a double environmental impact, avoiding the felling of trees of approximately 775 per month as the Illegal incursion into the Colombian jungles for the extraction of wood causing the extinction of native species and consequently loss of biodiversity, and they generate an important contribution with the extraction of invasive plants, such as the buchón, which proliferates rapidly with serious effects on nature as loss of oxygen in tributaries and as the death of aquatic species that live in bodies of water.

• It helps to minimize the emission of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and hydrogen cyanide generated by the clandestine burning of hydrangea stems.

• Reduces 25% of air pollution from pallet transport, given that they are stackable and take up less space than traditional pallets.

• Reduces water pollution since it has a proper management of hydrangea stems, minimizing pests and eutrophication due to excess nitrogen and phosphorus from raw material waste.

Los beneficios que aporta la innovación son diversos, tanto en la sociedad como en el medio ambiente.

• Bioestibas actualmente realiza el proceso de recolección de 90 toneladas de tallos de hortensias en los cultivos en la región del oriente antioqueño (La Ceja), generando un beneficio económico para los floricultores que disminuyeron del 75% los costos de la disposición final del material orgánico y los problemas ambientales que genera esta quema.

• Un claro ejemplo de beneficios presentes en la innovación es el aporte que realizan dos empresas que pertenecen al grupo empresarial del cual el señor Álvaro Vásquez es fundador y gerente, ambientalmente generan doble impacto, evitando la tala de árboles de aproximadamente 775 al mes como la incursión ilegal a las selvas Colombianas para la extracción de madera causando la extinción de especies nativas y por consiguiente pérdida de la biodiversidad, adicional genera una contribución importante con la extracción de plantas invasoras como el buchón la cual se prolifera rápidamente con efectos graves en la naturaleza como perdida de oxígeno en los afluentes y por cuanto la muerte de especies acuáticas que viven en los cuerpos de agua.

• Uno de sus aportes sociales se da en la generación de empleo que Bioestibas da desde hace más de 6 años contando con más de 1000 empleos directos e indirectos que se enfocan en garantizar ingreso mensual a madres cabeza de familia recolectoras de los desechos de hortensia.

• Contribuye a minimizar la emisión de gases de efecto invernadero como dióxido de carbono y cianuro de hidrógeno generado por la quema clandestina de tallos de hortensia.

• Reduce el 25% de la contaminación en el aire por el transporte de las estibas, dado que pueden ser apilables y ocupan menos espacio que las estibas tradicionales.

• Disminuye la contaminación de agua ya que tiene un manejo adecuado de los tallos de hortensia minimizando las plagas y la eutrofización por el exceso de nitrógeno y fósforo procedentes de los desechos de la materia prima
