After interviewing Nathan George, the Group Leader of Neutronics and Radiation Shielding from X-Energy, we now have a deep understanding of the innovations behind X-Energy. Their forward-thinking products entail the development of advanced nuclear reactors. Nathan said, “These innovations promise enhanced safety, increased efficiency, and reduced waste compared to traditional nuclear power plants.” This innovation stems from a dedicated team of scientists and engineers striving to be at the forefront of providing innovative and implementable energy solutions.
In our conversation, we spoke about the impact the new XE reactors will have on the energy industry. Nathan talked about the significance Triso-X (a subsidiary of X-Energy) plays in the XE line. The utilization of pebble fuel that comes from Triso-X will allow for a much safer and more sustainable reaction process. This Triso fuel has been named “the most robust nuclear fuel on Earth” by the US Department of Energy. Nathan went on to say, “It is inherently safer as it is a unique fuel form. The radioactive materials are safely encapsulated in graphite balls to ensure maximum safety.”
Nathan’s expertise and long tenure at X-Energy yielded a strong yet simple answer on what inspired the company to commence. Nathan began with an alarming explanation of the potential energy crisis. As global energy consumption will double before 2100, a stable, harmless energy source must emerge. Nathan explained, “X-Energy was founded on technology used in high-temperature cooled reactors which have been around since the mid-1900s. One of the main downsides of current nuclear reactors is the radioactive waste, but we (X-Energy) have designed a reactor to maximize output while increasing safety through Triso-X.” The enhanced safety of Triso-X comes from its compact design and enhanced protection of radioactive materials within its graphite shell.
When questioned about the impact of X-Energy, Nathan spoke on a few of the short-term wins but emphasized the long-term impact the company is looking towards. Their large investment in the XE reactors has created a massive opportunity for long-term impact on climate change. When asked about the financial gains that come with X-Energy's success, Nathan felt the environmental and societal impact of creating clean energy triumphs over any monetary gain. However, Nathan commented on how the compact and enhanced safety aspect of the upcoming XE line could bring scalability.
X-Energy's innovation has certainly benefited their business as a whole. By creating a competitive advantage through the XE line of reactors, they are at the forefront of one of the biggest solutions to climate change. With the full potential of nuclear energy years away, they are certainly in a position to capitalize off of their advanced designs.
