Giving suppliers good values to share

The fashion industry is the second most polluting industry in the world. Because JBC tries to be sustainable in all areas of the supply chain, they directly contribute to solving 16 of the 17 sustainable development goals, according to Valerie Geluykens, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager of JBC. The only goal to which they do not directly contribute is goal 2: “zero hunger.”

Jean-Baptiste Claes founded JBC in 1975. Ten years later, Ann and Bart, his children, joined the company. JBC has always been a family-owned company. At that moment, they drew up a family charter with core values, which they considered most important as a family and as a family business. There is a big focus on the values of respect and corporate responsibility. This indicates that sustainability has long been part of the company because the family Claes always paid a lot of attention.

The innovation we mainly want to talk about is the relationship with the suppliers. JBC imposes a certain standard for suppliers, and before starting a partnership with a supplier, they first check whether this supplier works according to the same standards and values. By doing this, they focus specifically on several SDGs such as goal 8: “decent work and economic growth,” goal 16: “peace, justice, and strong institutions,” and goal 17: “partnerships for the goals.”

These global challenges are also addressed in AB InBev’s 2025 Sustainability Goals. These goals concern positive, measurable results in the areas of climate action, circular packaging, smart agriculture, and water stewardship. Only through collaboration can a sustainable future be reached. Sustainability is not just part of AB InBev's business; it is the company's business.

Solar Power for All

The PowerBloc is YouSolar’s main product; however several components of this device factor into the definition of forward-thinking innovation. First and foremost is their patented micro converter that connects to any brand of solar panel, and converts power more efficiently than previous models, and is more lightweight allowing for easy transportation. Because it connects with each panel individually, there is no need for a standard array display. One can choose their layout in whatever manner they wish. The PowerBloc itself is a plug and play model that can power small electrical uses such as blender or vacuums, in addition to items that require larger portions of power, such as electric cars and household utilities like heat. Because it can be used to store excess energy from these panels, the PowerBloc is mostly used as a replacement to diesel generators and is looking for footholds in markets of countries where power outages are common and are paying for temporary energy at an expensive rate. However, it is also utilized as a battery that doles out incremental levels of energy. Although the initial price of the SolarBloc setup is costlier than most generators, the cost per kilowatt-hour is nearly half the price (diesel: 50-75 cents, Solar PowerBloc: 20-25 cents) and makes a very sound business case for itself as an investment in renewable energy.

Aquaponic Farming in Downtown Toledo

Balance Farms has the ability to produce four pounds of basil, 2,000 heads of lettuce, and a smattering of bok choy every week. They then hand-deliver this produce to 30 restaurants in the area (including Balance Grille), all from an 8,600 square-foot downtown warehouse. The aquaponic farm has pushed the limits for sustainable food in numerous categories in its ability to grow in this capacity. Dan Sadoski, along with Karamachandani and Jang, are truly the masterminds behind the innovation; starting from the idea, down to the mechanics of the systems in place, these three worked together to create this remarkable Sustainable indoor farm.

The idea started with Dan Sadoski, the head designer, mechanic, and inspiration behind Balance Farms. Sadoski, previously working in the Information Technology field, has a passion for food, building personal relationships, and starting something new in the world of sustainability. “Our inputs and outputs are all reused, we compost, we use very little water compared to traditional farming, and we are able to compete and compare to distribution models because we are using less energy,” says Sadoski. “[We are] building more of an ecological system of beneficial organisms that work together, that’s how there is less loss than traditional farming.” The creators of the farm can touch on all aspects of sustainability regarding farming and agriculture because they are using their brainpower to work around obstacles that cause traditional farmers big problems.

This creation is what’s known as the Farm Fare Software Application, which helps connect those small and medium farms with different food hubs in Ohio and the surrounding area.
