Meet the Sisters Planting Seeds with Coffee Beans

Brew Sisters' café is a Melbourne-based coffee business which is saving the planet one mug at a time. The sisters and baristas, Gabby and Flick have set their coffee cart apart from the rest at Melbourne University by encouraging consumers to drink responsibly (their coffee, that is). Brew Sisters provide their customers with waste-free options through the use of a mug library and their strong encouragement of keep cups. They have two locations at Melbourne University, a coffee van and a shop front, as well as a mobile coffee cart which they set up at different events and markets. Their main goal through this innovation is to educate people on the environmental impact of their consumption habits – FYI coffee cups are NOT recyclable!

Ecu is Transforming Footwear by Recycling Wasted Tires in Mexico

Ecü has transformed the way the shoe sole and socks are produced. For the shoe sole, the company uses wasted tires and PET plastic as raw materials, the mix of these materials helps to have a lighter sole. To do this they collect, recycle and finally design their products to create useful and innovative ones. For other product that Ecü has to offer to their clients use bamboo thread, which is a plant that requires less volume of water than the cotton for its harvest.

The purpose of this project is to generate a positive environmental effect by creating useful products for the community. Daniel Noroña, co-founder of Ecu, said “Our company uses wasted tires to reduce the impact in our environment and give a second use of this waste to help our planet.” It's important to highlight that as of today the company has recycled around 1,350 tires and they expect to continue increasing this amount by growing their sales volume. Ecu will help to reduce the increasing pollution problems that is caused in our country by burning tires, which release CO2. A burning tire is equivalent to the pollution that a car produces in one year. Mexico produced annually 40 million of tires and less than 4% of these wastes are recycled, the ones that are recycled are used to create gym floors, shoe soles or for the renewal of pavement roads. In addition, the company continues looking forward to innovate in other clothes by recycling materials to help to reduce the carbon footprint.

Energryn, Hybrid Technology

Today Energryn is the company with more success in sustainable innovation
in Mexico: the only Mexican company awarded with the Innovation Prize by the Pacific Alliance in the category of Environment and the only company from Quintana Roo that has won two times the Fund of Technology Innovation (FIT by its initials in Spanish) from SE and CONACYT. With 9 patents, they are the company with the most patents in the world in the fields of Solar Water Heating. With just 8 kg. of weight, Solesyto is the solar hybrid water heating system with the smallest ecological footprint in the world. Energryn has been chosen as the company with the most social impact in 2017 by the Shelter Tech Mexico program hosted by Habitat for Humanity, Village Capital and
Terwilliger Center for Innovation in Shelter.

"Energryn has helped solve various aspects of the daily lives of Mexicans. Statistics show that more than half of families in Mexico bathe in cold water because they lack a water heater and only 2% of homes in our country have a solar heater. The innovation of “solesyto” directly contributes to people with low purchasing power, to take a bath with hot water, without compromising their income or incurring orbiting expenses." This is aligned with the sustainable development goals of “GOOD HEALTH & WELL BEING”; dignifying baths for marginalized communities.

Another problem that it solves, is AFFORDABLE & CLEAN ENERGY; because it uses solar radiation to heat the water and it does it with an easily accessible technology and very friendly costs.

The heater "Solesyto" is patented as the heater that generates the lowest carbon footprint in the world, and the business has also incurred in the hotel industry for water heating, which makes the infrastructure of hotels improve with this innovation, taking care of the objective of INDUSTRY INNOVATION & INFRASTRUCTURE of the SDG's.

The ecological footprint of the solar heater “Solesyto”, compared to an LP Gas heater, reduces CO2 emissions by 80%, contributing to reduce pollution and therefore benefiting the environment in favor of CLIMATE ACTION. Additionally, the heater is produced with 100% recyclable materials, which makes it an alternative that is environmentally friendly.

Aiming for a Zero Waste Lifestyle

Bodega Cero is a concept store for the zero-waste lifestyle “where you can find everything you need to eat, to clean yourself and to clean your house, with the least packaging possible. Atexcaco: Run-of-the-River Hydroelectric Plant

Atexcaco Hydroelectric plant is the only private hydroelectric which operates on “run-of-the-river” system in Mexico. This hydroelectric plant is in Puebla and it is part of Autlan, a company mainly dedicated to exploit manganese ferro-alloys.

Different from other mining companies and also traditional hydroelectric plants, Autlan created Atexcaco Hydroelectric in order to supply their 155 MW need of energy, through a “run-of-the-river” or “no reservoir” plant.

The Atexcaco Hydroelectrectric initiative supports four of the Sustainable Development Goals:

(7) “Affordable and Clean Energy” - Through hydroelectric power, and no combustible fuels, Autlan creates its own energy.
(6) “Clean Water and Sanitation” - Without a reservoir, flooding of the upper part of the river does not take place, river flow continues. As a result, people and animals, remain living at or near the river and existing habitats are not flooded.
(12) “Responsible Consumption and Production” - Atexcaco's Plant is designed in order to only extract the correct flow amount, without damaging environmental balance.
(13) “Climate Action” - since the plant provides 100% sustainable energy, avoiding the river contamination and preventing emissions of CO2.

We believe there is an innovation and potential versus other manufacturing companies by integrating a self-service clean energy and also versus traditional hydroelectric plants. Mexico is sub-indexed in terms of hydroelectric production (1.6% versus 16% rest of the world out of total energy production) and is a country which could scale this technology through its 37 hydrological regions, and not only public but private initiatives such as Autlan. In this way Autlan group can create value with a sustainable method.
