Global Goals

12. Responsible Consumption and Production

Summary

The SDGs number 12 goal is to ensure sustainable business practices and consumer behavior. TIPIAH embrace this goal in its business core. First, TIPIAH is fully committed to minimizing waste generation through all its production chain. TIPIAH has a positive impact on its suppliers by promoting new ways of product delivery. Second, from workshops to shopping advisory, TIPIAH is educating its customers and creating awareness about their environmental footprint.

Innovation

TIPIAH's business strategy is its innovation. TIPIAH was born thanks to Pamela’s desire to spread out her zero-waste lifestyle and Jurgen’s will to start a business of his own. Together, they conceived a business model that is totally focused on giving a different grocery shopping experience to customers by providing to them a variety of eco-friendly products in a way that helps to reduce their environmental footprint. But as we mentioned before, TIPIAH's goal is to help reduce waste along the production chain. So, let me explain how TIPIAH does this. Before the product is displayed on TIPIAH’s shelves, TIPIAH’s management works in collaboration with their suppliers to seek a way, package or container, that can be reused every time to deliver the goods to the store. Once the product is in the store, an experienced customer knows that he must bring his own bottles and containers to carry out the products, but what happens with the newbies? No worries, TIPIAH fosters a campaign called “adopt your bottle” where people can leave their empty bottles, and after a good cleaning process, the bottles can be reused in the store. So far so good. Through this process, TIPIAH has been able to prevent multiple-plastic packaging that the majority of products come with, but what happen to products like the eco-toothbrushes that have a finite utility cycle? Well, TIPIAH offers workshops and guidance so the customers can learn what is the best way to recycle these products. In conclusion, by helping to reduce waste along the production chain and educating its customers in a zero-waste lifestyle, TIPIAH embraces the number 12 SDGs goal: to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.

Inspiration

Inspiration for This Innovation

Pamela: “Our core motivation is our care for the environment. We are also moved by the easiness of how the people can be involved in the movement. They can learn from it today and began to apply it tomorrow - it doesn’t involve a huge change in your way of live. Therefore, we want to support all our clients with the tools on how they can also adopt this awareness and movement."

Jurgen: “Also, to start your own business is a big motivation. You’re fighting for what you want to accomplish, and I agree with all that Pamela said. Besides helping our society, we’re pushing a change. It is our way to put our little effort for a change. At the end, if we’re helping the environment we are helping ourselves. We care for the next generations. We are living all this big environmental impact, so we need to do something about it now.”

Overall impact

As Pamela mentioned in the interview, “We can calculate how much waste we are preventing to end in the landfills.” So far TIPIAH has prevented an amount of plastic waste generation equivalent to 1.6M straws, 851K plastic bags or 490K toothbrushes.

In the short term, TIPIAH's focus is to minimize the waste through all its productivity chain. And in the long run, TIPIAH wants to create a zero-waste culture along its suppliers and customers.

Business benefit

Because TIPIAH's focus is to give to the customer a new grocery shopping experience, it has take advantage of the eco-friendly market plus it is growing its customer base by educating new customers and by pioneering as the only eco-friendly market/shop that sells products without packaging.

Social and environmental benefit

As we mentioned, the main impact that TIPIAH has in the environment is directly correlated with the prevention of plastic waste its suppliers and customers can have by collaborating and shopping with TIPIAH.
