Summary

Colombia presents an environmental, political, and social problem with bees. In the first instance, rural apiaries are in danger of the misuse of chemical pesticides for agricultural use, which is why bees have migrated to cities and these are vulnerable and rejected by the population due to the fear they generate. In recent years, about 16,000 hives have been lost per year. (Humboldt Institute - 2020)

“Andrea owner of Melifera, says that the biggest problem in the world is the society that doesn't know how to take care of the environment and within it the bees. They mention that for every 10 foods sold in the country, 7 are pollinated by bees and that is one of the most important activities in the world”

In the political arena “Colombian beekeeping doesn't have a beekeeping law that exclusively regulates the development of the activity and that adopts specific measures for the management and control of bees and their products. However, there are other rules of a general nature, that are related to the management of some of the activities carried out in the different phases of the production process” (Alexander von Humboldt Biological Resources Research Institute - Sustainable Biotrade - Year 2008). To this scenario we must add the difficult political environment that this issue has in our country, there is a huge legal void due to the private interests of large business.

The approach that Melifera has as a company dedicated to beekeeping in the city is to improve the interaction between citizens and bees and this integrates environmental aspects, having a main focus on the academic and social aspects. Today the company has three apiaries in the city with more than 50 hives.

Innovation

Melifera's Innovation is the process of change that it is bringing to the beekeeping sector, applying urban beekeeping to rural beekeeping. Melifera carries out large urban beekeeping, with bees from rescues or withdrawals. They respect their reproduction and natural feeding, they do not improve them genetically or buy nuclei from other beekeepers. Its honey and derivatives production process is carried out within the premise of keeping the bees in optimal conditions, without modifying their behavior or state. This gives Melifera a competitive advantage over its competitors, which offer adulterated or processed honey, removing the natural characteristics of the product. According to Melifera, 56 swarms have been rescued, which is equivalent to approximately 3,360,000 bees in 6 years.

“Andrea and Alejandro, owners of the enterprise, have been doing this job for 6 years and they love it, they are convinced that it was the best option for change they have been able to make in their lives, in the workplace, and professionally”

Inspiration

Alejandro manager of Melifera, frequently visited his father's farm, located on the outskirts of Bogotá - Colombia. He wanted to create his own business of natural products, without chemical additives, which affect people's health. He told this to his father on one of his visits to the farm. Hours later, Alejandro walking around the crops, found a hive of bees and this led him to think that he could dedicate himself to being a beekeeper, taking advantage of the space he had on his father's farm. This is how he began with the project of profiting from selling honey, which months later, his partner Andrea wanted to join and together they embarked on the path of establishing Melifera.

Days passed and this couple visited the swarms on the outskirts of the city every 2 months, but on the last visit, there was a big surprise. The bee business was over, as all the hives had died, due to pesticides applied to a nearby potato crop. At that time, Andrea and Alejandro discovered the great threat that bees had in rural areas, since these chemicals used to protect crops from pests cause damage to the nervous system of bees, leading them to a slow and painful death.

We must find a different strategy so that our bees are not threatened”. This is where this couple decided to learn from developed countries about urban beekeeping, which was the solution to keep the bees in a safe place.

“Andrea and Alejandro, owners of Melifera, tell us that the most important thing for them is the bees and their well-being. Now they rescue, care for, and preserve swarms in their urban apiaries, on terraces in the city of Bogotá”.

==================================================

Overall impact

The bee population has been affected by 20% in the last 15 years (Hernandez, 2018). Melifera's actions aren't only focused on stopping the loss of ecological biodiversity (SDG-15), to protect this threatened species and prevent its extinction, but also to increase the number of bees with the expansion of 3,000,000 members per year and be sustainable for the next five years.

Melifera works constantly in training the inhabitants of Bogotá - Colombia, her approach has led them to use their social networks and according to her own studies, the population with the greatest empathy and emotion are between 22 and 40 years of age, to they are taught the different ways in which we can maintain well-being and harmony with nature (SDG-12) and sensitivity regarding climate change mitigation (SDG-13), focused on swarm rescues and their management, as well as the morphology, habitat, customs, and relationship of the bee population with humans.

"For Melifera, the most important thing is to impact the largest population possible about the well-being that bees provide to everyone as a society, they want to intensify and publicize SDG 12"

==============================

Business benefit

Melifera is a business that is at a point of equilibrium, guided by the cycle of the bees, currently it has 56 hives, which, being in their productive stage, allow up to 220 kilos of honey to be sold in a 2-week fair. This reaffirms the quality and taste of this product, which represents a monthly sale of USD 1,050.00. These monthly sales cover the costs of renting the terraces, supplies, materials, and salaries.

Now, within the company's projections, they expect that by the end of the year they will have a total of 100 hives, which would lead to an increase in sales of around USD 1,800.00 per month. Additionally, Melifera has studied the possibility of exporting honey in the medium term, to countries such as the United States. This has an annual per capita consumption of 273,000 tons (Customs Strategy, 2021), and values honey for its natural characteristics. This is why it is necessary to grow the number of hives of the company, to achieve a considerable production of honey to be exported.

“Andrea owner of Melifera reconfirm us. The more hives, the more honey, so by the end of 2022, our goal is to have 100 hives and in this way be able to dream to export our product, raw honey, to the United States"

===============================================

Social and environmental benefit

Bees are generators of more than 70% of the planet's pollination actions, so their care and maintenance in urban systems help maintain the balance in the ecosystem with trees and sustainable sowing. Melifera works on the responsibility of educating citizens about the care they should have for the bees that live in the city, because by not having these active members, we could end the species and degrade the natural production of trees and flowers. This educational work towards the community, Melifera carries out within its apiaries, where they have approximately 3 million bees, which live in a safe environment and fulfill their natural function of pollinating in the city of Bogotá.

"We love (Meliferas´s founder) bees and for this we want everyone to know about their work so that we don't become a threat to them."

==========================================

Melifera was born in 2016 within the beekeeping sector. This name is given thanks to the protagonists of this company, who are rescued by a couple of beekeeping engineers. Andrea and Alejandro are dedicated to removing honeycombs and bees located around the city of Bogotá and giving them a safe home on a flat roof within the city itself. Melifera provides responsible care for bees, preventing them from being exterminated by the population and agricultural pesticides. Therefore, the hives found are relocated, they are given a raise where they can continue with their natural process. Finally, Melifera markets the honey that the bees have left over in a natural way without adulterating or processing it, and provides training and tours within the rural apiaries, to make citizens aware of the importance of bees in our ecosystem and how we can preserve them.

“Andrea and Alejandro, owners of Melifera tell you that they climb roofs, balconies, and trees to rescue bees. We help them to build their hive again and we hope that they are in their productive process so that they can share their honey with us. We do not force them to work, nor do we adulterate their honey. We hope it happens naturally."
