This is an innovation to the company's supply chain that consists of eliminating intermediaries and generating an inclusive business model in which independent recyclers are adopted as direct suppliers of raw materials. This change involved major adjustments within the company since this population is not normally banked and the people often require training in money management and business organization.

A reengineering was carried out in the area of ​​supply and raw material, which grew accordingly to be able to take charge of the new challenges encountered. This allowed the a large number of suppliers to be captured who have a very strong level of loyalty, which generates a win-win relationship for the company and for this community.

Esta es una innovación a la cadena de abastecimiento de la empresa que consiste en eliminar los intermediarios, generando un modelo de negocio inclusivo en que se adopta a los recicladores independientes como los proveedores directos de materia prima. Este cambio implicó grandes ajustes al interior de la empresa, pues esta población normalmente no está bancarizada y requiere capacitación en manejo del dinero y organización empresarial.

Se hizo una reingeniería en el área de abastecimiento y materia prima, que creció acorde para poder hacerse cargo de los nuevos retos encontrados, permitiendo captar una gran cantidad de proveedores que tienen un nivel de fidelización muy fuerte, generando una relación gana-gana para la empresa y para esta comunidad.

Inspiration

In 2006, Empacor S.A. faced a crisis since its supply chain was concentrated solely on intermediaries, who, by managing the market, can generate agreements among themselves to retain raw material, deliver in dosed manners, and set very high sales prices. This crisis generated a need for the company to reinvent itself and prompted the company to carry out a market study and fieldwork to understand the first link in the recycling chain.

After the market study, Empacor S.A. started the corporate social responsibility program that worked hand in hand with recyclers' associations, and provided support that guarantees that environmental reclaimers are successful and are kept in the market that is constantly changing.

En el año 2006, Empacor S.A. se enfrentó a una crisis debido a que su cadena de abastecimiento estaba concentrada únicamente en los intermediarios, quienes al manejar el mercado, están en capacidad de generar acuerdos entre ellos para retener materia prima, entregarla de forma dosificada y fijar precios muy altos de venta. Esto les generó la necesidad de reinventarse y los impulsó a realizar un estudio de mercado y trabajo de campo, llegando al primer eslabón de la cadena del reciclaje.

Por consiguiente, Empacor S.A. inició el programa de responsabilidad social empresarial, trabajando de la mano con las asociaciones de recicladores, brindando un acompañamiento que garantiza que estos recuperadores ambientales sigan siendo exitosos y estén vigentes en un mercado que está cambiando constantemente.

Overall impact

Empacor took eight commitments because of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They are a company that complies with the principle of sustainable production and consumption, since the 90,000 tons of paper it produces annually come from recovered waste, and since it promotes recirculation processes of water and use of co-generated energy as a model of Circular Economy. The business also has the commitment to build together, innovate, motivate, support and accompany the whole family and contribute to the reduction of waste in landfills. (SDG 7 and 9)

Likewise, they reintegrate 80% of the direct waste generated in the production process, to later recycle this material, thus guaranteeing a reduction of their carbon footprint. Also, they are making correct use of fuel gas, generating emissions below the Atmospheric Pollution Unit - UCA accepted, while aware of the importance of consuming less than 3m³ of water per ton of paper produced. Empacor achieved articulation with organizations at the regional, national, and international levels, strengthening the social and environmental axes that compete within the production of 100% recycled cardboard. Empacor asumió ocho compromisos de cara a los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS), siendo una compañía que cumple con el principio de producción y consumo sostenible, ya que las 90.000 Ton de papel que produce anualmente provienen de residuos recuperados y promueve procesos de recirculación de agua y uso de energía cogenerada como modelo de Economía Circular, con el compromiso de construir en conjunto, innovar, motivar, apoyar y acompañar a toda la familia y contribuyendo a la reducción de residuos en los rellenos sanitarios. Asimismo, reintegran el 80% de los residuos directos generados en el proceso productivo, para después reciclar este material, así garantizan la disminución de la huella de carbono, haciendo un correcto uso de gas combustible generando emisiones por debajo de la Unidad de Contaminación Atmosférica - UCA aceptadas y siendo conscientes en consumir menos de 3m³ de agua por tonelada de papel producida. Empacor logró la articulación con organizaciones a nivel regional, nacional e internacional, fortaleciendo los ejes sociales y ambientales que competen dentro de la producción de cartón 100% reciclado. Business benefit

By removing middlemen from its supply chain, Empacor S.A. eliminated the high-cost overruns that it had to pay them in times of scarcity. They are no longer harmed by the practices and can obtain more raw materials at lower prices, without running the risk of a supply crisis like the ones that intermediaries generated in the past. This has made it possible to obtain greater profitability and the growth that they have been achieving in recent years. They are even achieving a scalable model that is already being carried out in the cities of Medellín and Cartagena. Since the implementation of this innovation in its supply chain, the company's profits have grown by 39%.

Al quitar a los intermediarios de su cadena de abastecimiento, Empacor S.A. eliminó los altos sobrecostos que debía pagarles en época de escasez. Ya no se ven perjudicados por las prácticas y pueden conseguir mucha más materia prima a buenos precios sin correr el riesgo de volver a tener crisis de abastecimiento como las que los intermediarios les generaban en el pasado. Lo que ha permitido obtener una mayor rentabilidad y el crecimiento que han ido consiguiendo en los últimos años. Logrando un modelo escalable que ya están llevando a cabo en las ciudades de Medellín y Cartagena. Desde la implementación de esta innovación a su cadena de abasteciminieto las utilidades de la empresa han crecido un 39%.

Social and environmental benefit

Recyclers are receiving support to improve their levels of technology, and disability insurance and a project is being led to replacing animal and human-powered vehicles with battery-powered bicycle carts. Empacor has focused on dignifying the work of a sector of the population that has always been highly marginalized by providing individuals with stability and tools so they can be successful. It currently works with 16 associations that each began with an average of 8 people and today are made up of between 50 and 100 each. The size of the business is reaching levels of business organization that has not been seen before, and they are replicating their learning process on their initiative alongside other members of the community. It is also committed to the eradication of child labor, which is often seen in these informal lines of work, and is in partnership with the district, to provide resources to two AMAR centers that work during school hours. Their support helps to provide care for the children of these people who carry out their work mainly at night.

They are also committed to the environment. Empacor S.A. generates 0.7 Tons of CO2 per ton of paper produced when the industry average in Colombia is 1.04 Tons of CO2 and the world average (the USA and Europe) is 1.5 Tons of CO2. Using 100% recycled raw material, each month prevents the felling of enough trees to fill 10 soccer fields and 7,000 tons of waste from reaching landfills. The water used in its processes recirculates up to 25 times, and the heat from the mill boilers is used to generate energy, providing 20% ​​of the total required.

Los recicladores están recibiendo acompañamiento para mejorar sus niveles de tecnificación, seguros por incapacidad y se está liderando un proyecto de sustitución de vehículos de tracción animal y humana por bicicarretas con baterías. Empacor se ha enfocado en dignificar el trabajo de un sector de la población que siempre se ha visto muy marginalizado, brindándoles la estabilidad y herramientas para que puedan asociarse y ser exitosos. Actualmente trabaja con 16 asociaciones que empezaron con un promedio de 8 personas y hoy en día están conformadas por entre 50 y 100 c/u, llegando a un nivel de organización empresarial que no se veía antes, donde replican por iniciativa propia su proceso de aprendizaje con los demás miembros de su comunidad. Además está comprometido con la erradicación del trabajo infantil que se suele ver mucho en estas líneas de trabajo informal, y en alianza con el distrito, entrega recursos a dos centros AMAR que funcionan en contrajornada escolar para brindar atención a los hijos de estas personas que realizan sus labores principalmente en las noches.

También están comprometidos con el medio ambiente. Empacor S.A. genera 0,7 Ton de CO2 por tonelada de papel producido, cuando el promedio de la industria en Colombia está en 1,04 Tons de CO2 y el promedio mundial (EE.UU. y Europa) en 1.5 Tons de CO2. Al usar materia prima 100% reciclada evita cada mes la tala de suficientes árboles para llenar 10 canchas de fútbol y que 7000 toneladas de residuos lleguen a rellenos sanitarios. El agua que utiliza en sus procesos recircula hasta 25 veces, y el calor de las calderas del molino se aprovecha para generar energía aportando el 20% de la que requieren en total.
