Summary

An initiative that promotes a responsible tours in Colombia and fosters peace and culture that has been obstructed by violence in our country.

Tourism is developed by former members of criminal gangs, women involved in this conflict and urban artists who show the transformation of previously dangerous neighborhoods avoided by tourists.

"We help convert people who participated in criminal activities such as armed violence, torture and other socially disruptive activities that significantly prevented or affected the country's growth (leaving wounds that extend from generation to generation) into good citizens."

They lead tours through their communities, showing them how their lives have been transformed thanks to their engagement in the tourism movement.

Innovation

"No sabían nada mejor".

...........

A regenerative and inclusive tourism that incorporates people who, in the past, were members of highly dangerous groups dedicated to all kinds of illegal activities, such as extortion and drug trafficking.

They wanted to step into change. They were frightening at first sight, but once we got to know them better, we realized they were people who were given no other chance than getting trapped in their parents' traditions. “They didn't know better”.

One of them said: “If I see that my father is a doctor, I want to be even a better doctor. But when I see my father as the best drug dealer, the one who best kills people, deals with weapons and has women here and there ... well, that's what I want to do. "

All of them are now part of a tourism that shows the beautiful face of this country and have already attracted hundreds of tourists, which allows the economic development of the communities in Colombia that have been transformed and come out of the crime.

“Our theory of change is the way we identify our problems and convert them in the Results that become our measure of success!”

Children living in these communities, who were directly exposed to criminal activities, now witness tourist guides bring great positive change to their neighborhoods and cities.

They are showing a face of transformation that is meant to last for the rest of their lives.

Inspiration

..................

Sebastian Rodriguez was a child and he now remembers:

“I'm 26 years old and I remember war was already going on in our country. I also remember our parents telling me that going on a short trip to a place like Melgar was dangerous (due to existing guerrillas and paramilitary), and going to the coastal area was worse because the trip was long and kidnappings happened on a daily basis. All of it made me live without peace.”

“This innovation emerged as a result of violence in our country: Fear of traveling was a permanent mental state. Having the opportunity to travel peacefully in our country was the best way to break down the barriers caused by fear. We realized we were losing too much!”

“We now want to destroy those barriers for the rest of the world”

Impulse Travel breaks down those barriers resulting from fear, by encouraging travelers and locals to use cultural exchange and supporting peace leaders (former gang members) as the means to internalize those differences and to maintain safe destinations.

We understand the challenges of traveling. Many times we are limited by language, short vacation time and the frustration that results from the fear of loss.

“In the midst of so much violence, why not chip in to help our country by making things start to get better in our cities and countryside, by doing responsible tourism, by including people, who once were in one way or another, part of the conflict and have seen in this a vehicle to live productive lives and a way of getting rid of the bad in their lives.”

Overall impact

................

The greatest impact of this innovation was bringing peace leaders and cultural guardians, into the value chain of tourism, which establishes the platform for two important results:

1) Making destinations safer and more prosperous.

Tourism is an amazing tool to maintain peace and improve communities.

2) Diversity is embraced: Meaningful experiences result from contact between cultural guardians, peace leaders and travelers. This in itself creates demand for other destinations as well as for the generation of products. Also making possible an effective inclusion of more of the interested parts, thus creating a loop of positive feedback.

“We can go to any person with an initiative for doing things the right way. We have peace leaders and culture guardians such as a lady who makes arepas and if she dies before she passes on her skills to one of her children… that treasure is lost! What she has is culture! she is a guardian; along with peace leaders such as Calabazo (in Egypt town) who was willing to transform his own life's reality."

"These leaders are established as independent business entities. In addition, Impulse Travel generates direct income and commercial interactions that allow, for instance, those mothers whose only source in the past was by breaking the law, to commercialize the bags they make instead."

"Today tourists stroll along with them while they get to know their stories and how their lives have been transformed. A very inspiring tourist product for those who at a time only knew violence, could discover a world that looks at them in a different way.”

Business benefit

............

The short term effect has been the transit of hundreds of tourists, every year, allowing the economic growth of communities that have steered away from crime in Colombia.

The long term effect will be a sustainable tourism that will be seen as a model and an opportunity that are worthy to be brought to other countries.

Social and environmental benefit

“We have the traditional tourist guides who give the traditional tour and on the other hand, we have other projects of social transformation such as:

Egypt Town in Bogotá which used to be one of Bogota´s most dangerous towns, overtaken by gangs like “La Diezma”, led by Jaime (a.k.a. Calabazo) who chose to stop his criminal ways and to participate in reactivating the town's economy in a different way.

These former gang members took the initiative to involve the local priest as a liaison with Universidad Externado de Colombia, which assisted them in developing the project.

In order for the project to make commercial sense, the university connected these leaders with Impulse Travel who has continued to help them.

Three years have passed, and thanks to their involvement in the tourism business, they have transformed their lives from gangs members, to being law abiding tourist guides.

Artists and people working in the armed conflict in Comuna 13 of Medellin and Bogota, come to tell their stories about how they are knitting peace.”

There are 24 communities that have received continuous benefits:
