Summary

‘Tamuku’ is a Telugu/Tamil word meaning Thandora, which is an instrument of the olden times generally used for announcing & scheduling of important meetings in a society. And as the name suggests, Tamuku, started in 2017 by Arunabha Bhattacharya and Narendran T, uses a subscription-based model to find, curate, and distribute high-quality and relevant information, opportunities, tools, and resources for NGOs and Development Sector Professionals in India. Learning new ideas and sharing them so other people can benefit from them. The company focuses on UN SDG 8 & 9, Decent work and Economic growth as it promotes development-oriented policies and decent job Creation.

Innovation

Tamuku's innovation relates to how they have identified the gap and implemented practices to provide a unique yet straightforward alerts service that focuses on sending the latest updates and opportunities specially designed for the business development sector and NGOs.

Tamuku realised the gap between people's reach on the various platforms and the opportunities available in the market. They have shown innovation in developing a bridge between the gap by channeling the options to the relevant people and NGOs. They focused on Identifying the various problems the NGOs are facing and the people for job opportunities, as well as for the problems faced by the opportunity provider. These include job opportunities, fundraising, upskilling workshops, educational courses, social work opportunities, free\low-cost licenses & equipment. They developed a strategy to connect the two parties with minimum effort and time and push content to people using existing tools like WhatsApp – Broadcast. The advantage Tamuku gives to its user is by reducing the cost of discovery for them and doing marketing for Tamuku and the associated organizations simultaneously.

There are scenarios where organisations need opportunities in one go, but they are difficult to find & compile as the sector is unorganized. However, Tamuku resolved this problem by innovating a donor mapping system that makes the service highly customised and relevant for a particular organization by mapping all the opportunities for that particular organization.

Also, a critical problem for NGOs & development sector businesses that were facing difficulties was raising a continuous flow of funds on their own. To address this issue, Tamuku started to develop e-products that work as a guide for NGOs to work independently and generate capital through various sources.

Inspiration

This idea dates back to 2006, when the founder, then working in the business development sector, had thought of sharing the news and opportunities with people working in the same/similar industries so that society does not lose the benefits from sustainable and social work. 2017 Tamuku started working on the same informally, looking at the presence of 30 lakh NGOs seeking help in various sectors. What motivated the founders was their passion for giving back and working for society for the greater good. They found that there are many genuine organizations like The Azim Premji Foundation that want to work for society at the greatest level but don't know enough spaces & structures to apply their human and financial resources, which really helps the society in the end, and the through Tamuku they wanted to work on & solve this problem. The founders say they feel blessed and happy to work for society as this is their passion, and to be happy and make others happy is the ultimate goal of life.

Overall impact

The sector was very conservative because Tamuku people started getting opportunities daily on their hands without any effort. Tamuku provides funding alerts, jobs alerts, etc., to the subscribers every day at a specific time without fail. They are responsible for reducing the cost and efforts to discover jobs and funding for their clients. As per the subscriber's experience, most of the platforms have a bulk of unorganized data, which tires the reader and could lead to a miss of a worthy opportunity and a waste of valuable efforts. On the other hand, Tamuku provides the data in bite-size, where it becomes very simple for the reader to figure out whether they are eligible or not. The complexity of the system is significantly reduced and has helped many NGOs.

It has connected with 30 lakh NGOs around the country and currently, 25% of them are active subscribers. Pulling members was difficult because of a lack of support, but Tamuku has a great work in ensuring the right opportunities reach the needful organization.

Some people want opportunities in one go. To resolve this problem, Tamuku developed a donor mapping system and monthly digest for a particular organization by mapping all the opportunities for that particular organization which has helped many organizations and fund providers for immediate response and action. Along with that Tamuku has created more than 20 e-products and planning to launch 30 more such e-products, which is a guide to help NGOs to do the work on their own, enabling them to become self-reliant and sustainable.

The company realizes they have the ability and resources to help generate funding and job opportunities for the NGOs. They are also looking forward to providing consulting services in the future to educate the NGOs about fundraising methods. They continue staying true to their mission and company values through their impact.

Business benefit

Tamuku works on a subscription-based model. It helps businesses by providing relevant information, opportunities, tools, and resources to NGOs and Development sector organizations in India. It works on the principles of the UN SDG 8, Decent work and Economic growth. They help businesses grow by finding them opportunities they didn't know existed. They help NGOs by telling them about fundraisers they don't know that they are eligible for.

Social and environmental benefit

Its work with NGOs and other such areas is making these organizations achieve their goal of social service and development much faster. They are creating a space that anyone can access with just a small amount to create awareness about different social benefits happening around them and ways in which they can access them. Working with multiple spectrums of organizations ranging from healthcare, wildlife, rural development, environment, etc., is bringing change. A change for the betterment of society and the environment at a broader level.
