Summary

Since 2001, Unilever Indonesia has focused on the Development of one variety of soybeans called, “Mallika” by the local farmers who undergo Special training from PT. Unilever Tbk, in partnership with the Faculty of Agricultural Technology of Gajah Mada University. This program was run to secure the continuous high quality raw material's supply chain for Bango sauce, while improving the economy of the farmers.

Innovation

The latest innovation is the launch of various facilities for foodies through digital sources. A digital library will ensure that the culinary heritage of the archipelago can be documented and preserved well, and can be accessed easily by anyone, anywhere and anytime throughnrecipes, video cooking demonstrations, tips on places and other favorite snacks.

The Importance of Malika Soy Beans in Bango's (Unilever) Supply Chain

Inspiration

Traditional black soy is a "forgotten crop" with no professional breeding efforts and few registered varieties. The last variety registered was in 1992, but is not available on the market. PT. Unilever Tbk initiated a research program with Gadjah Mada University. This new variety identified, called ‘Mallika’, produces superior yield. It is registered as an official variety with the Ministry of Agriculture and the seed propagation co-operatives are overseen by Gadjah Mada University. The results is superior seed quality that contributes to the preservation of a traditional crop.

Overall impact

The Innovation provides knowledge enhancement for the farmers because, in addition to gaining knowledge about soy beans, they gain knowledge on entrepreneurship, self-development and post-harvest processing of black soy.

Business benefit

Having trained the farmers to sustain the high quality Malika Soybeans Production, Unilever no longer needs to worry about its raw material supply chain.

Social and environmental benefit

The fact that Unilever has agreed to purchase the farmers' domesticated Malika soy beans above the regular Soy beans and below the import price,
