Summary

The transporting and bunkering of LNG are becoming increasingly important to the energy strategies of archipelagos and coastal communities across the world. The LNG Floating Transfer Terminal (FTT) has been developed to allow for small to mid-scale LNG operations at a significantly lower cost than a traditional jetty-based fixed terminal. The FTT is a flexible, quickly deployable solution that, thanks to a low draft barge and floating hoses, can operate in the widest possible range of locations at a fraction of the cost of fixed infrastructure. Houlder and its partners are already discussing a range of applications in the Americas and Asia. Importantly, it also has a significantly less environmental impact in comparison to a traditional fixed terminal. These communities have a limited appetite for major civil works required for new terminals, quaysides, and jetties due to environmental sensitivities and lack of readily available investment. Recognizing this, marine design consultancy Houlder, power generation experts Wärtsilä, and hose supplier Trelleborg have combined their talents for innovation to develop an alternative solution. Houlder’s LNG Floating Transfer Terminal (FTT) solution is a cost-effective solution for transferring LNG between receiving ships up to 800m off the coast and shore-based facilities. The system can be ordered and installed in a much shorter timeframe than a conventional LNG terminal, without the need for large civil works. The system can also be easily redeployed to other locations. The Self-Propelled FTT Barge is efficiently designed using simple steel or concrete barge.

It provides sufficient deck space to allow safe operations of the LNG equipment. Trelleborg’s Cryoline Floating Hoses are used for the transfer of LNG and the Boil Off Gas (BOG) from the shore to the barge. Bolted together 12m sections in 220m strings provide an efficient and safe LNG offshore transfer option with minimum BOG generation. They combine high flexibility, reliability, and long service life meeting LNG operators’ and contractors’ offloading requirements related to safety, flow rate capacity, and operational availability.

Innovation

The KHOBRA Floating Transfer System (FTT), originally developed by HOULDER and later refined in collaboration with KLAW LNG, facilitates the transfer of LNG from one vessel to another in a safe and controlled way. The system consists of a deployment crane, a motion-compensated deployable Emergency Release System (ERS) manifold, and a Gas System. The system is based on a compact floating barge that connects to the LNG Carrier using HOULDER transfer system and to the shore by Trelleborg’s cryogenic floating hoses. Key to the success of the KHOBRA transfer system is a tensioner and compensation system that monitors and mechanically compensates for vessel motions and changes in the draft. It protects the receiving vessel manifold from excessive forces during transfer and monitors the manifold position to check for vessel drift and trigger emergency shutdown or, ultimately, release through breakaway couplers if limits are reached. Simpler, quicker to operate, and safer than current hose-to-hose operations, the KHOBRA transfer system utilizes a standard ship crane to deploy a manifold connection and emergency release system to the receiving vessel. The KHOBRA, developed by H HOULDER and KLAW LNG, provides a safe and efficient hybrid hose handling solution for small to mid-scale LNG applications.

Inspiration

Ferdinand Lisaldy, APAC Regional Business Development Senior Manager said that Houlder always serves the customer by giving them access to the combined know-how of over one hundred professionals –all with a passion for the industry you work in. He was invited as a speaker at a conference on maritime innovations in 2018 in Surabaya. This event was attended by more than 80 participants. He has shared the new technology and innovation for the LNG industry called Floating Transfer Termina (FTT). The event was organized by the UK Embassy in collaboration with Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember Surabaya, widely known as ITS

The issues discussed in the conference are around the innovations those would enable Indonesia to develop its maritime potential as well as developing the nation’s capabilities and capacities. Technology transfer was one of the major interests and the UK Ambassador himself supported the idea.

Being one of the UK companies invited, Houlder expressed their support to the Indonesian government and people by allowing its technology to be licensed and developed in Indonesia, giving the chance to support local content maximization and development of Indonesian engineering capabilities. Houlder also welcomed the opportunity to accommodate interns from Indonesian universities to work in one of the UK offices.

Overall impact

Overall impact

• Value for Money by reducing CAPEX and OPEX

• Complete flexibility to fit your needs by offering a wide range of configurations and providing a solution for most application

• Proven LNG components by Trelleborg, Klaw, and other world-class component providers

• Reduce Impact by Protecting marine environments with a floating jetty, leaving the seabed undisturbed.

• Save time by Accelerating your energy project by enabling a speedier permit process with a floating jetty.

• More flexibility by Tansferring solution is easily transportable and can be chartered to suit fluctuating market demands.

Business benefit

Traditional energy infrastructure projects are high-risk and expensive investments, sometimes in environmentally sensitive areas. The floating transfer solutions unlock fast-track market opportunities and support the full lifecycle of the customers' assets. The technology that enables safe and efficient transfer of fluids such as LNG, ammonia, biofuels, and CO2 (for carbon capture and storage) between a carrier and an offshore or onshore terminal without the need of a jetty. The aim solution is prefabricated at a shipyard, eliminating the environmental impacts of the time- and resource-intensive construction of a jetty or a quay. The innovation is changing the energy import and export landscape, making projects possible without the cost and inflexibility of traditional fixed-jetty infrastructure. Its flexibility and mobility enable energy distribution to areas previously considered infeasible due to high costs or challenging geography. Contribute to major cost savings when compared to the traditional fixed infrastructure of jetties and quays, it also offers tremendous environmental benefits because it floats - leaving the marine environment where it operates completely untouched. Cleaner energy should be cheap and accessible by providing cost-efficient solutions to clients worldwide.

Social and environmental benefit

Environmental protection with special attention to meet the strict Indonesia regulations for environmentally responsible handling of cargo between vessel and the floating offshore transfer terminal. Having its nature as a floating asset, there is no need of timely dredging at the port.

There are at least two distinctive operational schemes for the FTT: unpropelled and propelled. In the unpropelled models, the Floating transfer terminal (FTT) is towed out in the open sea and moored alongside an arriving vessel. In certain scenarios could also be moored to a pile with pile rollers or simply with chains or ropes. In the propelled model, the Floating Transfer Terminal (FTT) is equipped with dynamic positioning thrusters.
