Summary

In Colombia, the construction sector is part of one of the pillars that have a greater participation and dynamism in the economy, dividing recent history into two blocks. Before the pandemic in 2020, and hand in hand with the government with political influence of right-wing character, it has been one of the great generators of employment generation and contribution to the growth year after year of the Colombian economy. This is both in the part of infrastructure works as well as buildings, registering an increase in the sector's GDP of 9.4% for 2021, and at the end of the first semester of 2022 the increase has been of 7%.

Although it has been one of the sectors that has contributed to the reactivation of the economy in post-pandemic times, it has also been evidenced that this sector is one of the most punished. Construction costs have skyrocketed mainly due to the rise in cost for the following raw materials: iron, steel, paint, wood, machinery and tools among others. The external contributions being the increase in maritime and air transportation costs and the effects of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Within Columbia, the added economic variable of having one of the currencies with the highest depreciation rate worldwide, and the beginning of a new government that will include a tax reform, will bring as a consequence a scenario of uncertainty regarding the economic growth of the country. This will have a direct impact to the final consumer who will have to pay more for the goods and services that are part of both consumer products as well as investment goods.

Taking into account the above mentioned variables and the innovation environment offered by WOODPECKER, it can be inferred that we are facing a sustainable housing manufacturing solution that seeks to reduce the social gap in Colombia. WOODPECKER has found a sustainable use of materials such as coffee husks (which today represents a large volume of waste in the agricultural industry and pollutes soils and water) and materials derived from PVC. The use of these materials guarantee low-cost housing, easy construction and installation, as well as the construction of schools with the sole purpose of providing the community with an impact through the improvement of the quality of life in the community. This innovation factor makes WOODPECKER contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) #1 No Poverty; #9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure; #10 Reduced Inequalities; #11 Sustainable Cities and Communities and #12 Responsible Consumption and Production.

Innovation

WOODPECKER through its innovative alternative construction system and eco-friendly product WPC, is able to assemble and deliver a house or structure that is earthquake resistant in any type of terrain in a maximum time of 7 days. Its products differ from traditional construction, through the system of assembly by parts (fitting parts similar to Lego) and easy transportation. The parts to assemble the structures are 7 times lighter than traditional building materials, which directly affects freight costs. The design and ease of assembly of the structure makes the final installation swift by utilizing tools that can be found in any hardware store (hand tools), making it possible for the community to participate in the installation as part of the access to this type of innovation. Due to the finish of the material, painting is not required, which usually increases costs. Instead, customers can choose house from a selection of different colors (colonial red, yellow ocher, chocolate, off-white). All this allows to show measurable results quickly both for the contracting organizations (government and private companies), and for the company to document them as success stories.

Sustainable Construction Projects from Colombia

Inspiration

This project began as an academic work, based on the experience of Andres Franco, father of Alejandro Franco (Woodpecker's CEO) who has worked for several decades in the traditional construction sector. On a vacation, he sat down on a bench to take a break and noticed that the seat was made of a material meant to mimic the look of natural wood. He was curious and wanted to experiment in finding a way to make it. That is where the need to create the WPC material came from and with it came tests with different natural fibers such as rice husk, grass, pine sawdust, oil palm fiber and coconut fiber, among others. Then he did the same with the polymers and made the mixture with the natural materials, which were considered coffee waste in the industrialized production part. Alejandro abandoned his work and relied on the research team of the Los Andes University, as well as the endorsement of Colciencias through the recognition with the innovation award in 2009, giving priority to creating the company from the ground up; importing machinery, testing profiles and models, etc. "It was a ten-year learning curve", says Alejandro.

Overall impact

There is a great need to create a lightweight construction system for housing and classrooms, in order to impact places in rural areas where traditional construction does not reach due to the complexity of the country's geography is a great opportunity to contribute to the reduction of poverty in our country (SDG # 1). WOODPECKER is providing access to decent housing for family groups living in rural areas hand in hand with NGOs and social programs of the Colombian government, as well as private enterprise.

This need is leveraged in the development of new ideas and the use of technology and unconventional materials such as coffee husks (CISCO). Within the parameters of introducing new ideas that are aimed at the efficient use and maximization of resources in order to generate a social, economic and ecological impact in an industry of great relevance as is the construction and in this case of high sustainable sense that goes in line with SDG # 9.

And as part of the objectives of the country and governments until 2030, this type of project needs the accompaniment of the agenda of social projects in order to reduce inequality in our country (Colombia). Taking into account the figures presented by the World Bank, we are one of the economies with the highest degree of inequality in Latin America. The possibility of innovation through entrepreneurship can contribute to close the gap and deliver the possibility of having a home for families living in poverty (SDG # 10), taking as a reference that the type of sustainable housing raised in this case becomes up to 30% cheaper than a house built through the traditional system.

Finally we can contribute with this initiative to give back the opportunity to families that for different factors (social, political or economic) showed that the only way to progress was to migrate to big cities, which has led to overpopulation in capitals and major cities having an impact on the increased consumption of natural resources, affecting the quality of life (air, food, public services, health among others), forgetting that in rural areas there are also opportunities for progress and one of them is to have a house, made of eco-friendly materials, in order to seek to complement this sustainable housing, with economic activities aligned with SDG #11 and SDG #12.

Business benefit

WOODPECKER is a company that is on the way to growth and recognition in the non-traditional construction sector, with a vision of being sustainable in the long term, supported by the EMIS report which shows that in the year 2021 the company had revenues of more than US $500. 000, with a tendency to consolidate in these times of financial and social uncertainty due to the global factors we are currently experiencing (post-covid scenario; conflict in Europe; container crisis and high freight costs; exponential increase in the cost of raw materials and not least the fact that the Colombian peso "COP" is one of the most devalued currencies since the beginning of the pandemic), which leads us to think that the current government with political influence from the left wing (first time in 212 years since independence) that will govern Colombia until the year 2026, the growth projections are highly favorable given that it wants to give greater prominence to the rural part, The growth projections are highly favorable given that they want to give greater prominence to the rural area, in which they are studying to continue in the line of sustainability, providing the different proposals of structure with solar panels, renewable energies and drainage systems to collect rainwater, as well as testing dry toilet systems where solids can be used as fertilizers, which would represent lines of extension of the current business, which can cover other problems in the local market, as well as in the international market.

WOODPECKER has made since its foundation 3456 constructions to date, and has sold more than 520 thousand square meters of WPC material, has large future projects linked to vulnerable communities. The houses already manufactured and installed are in the range of approximately USD $8,700 (for a constructed area of 60 m2).
