This innovation is dedicated to "mitigating the impact of debris on the streets and also avoiding the use of natural aggregates such as stone and sand. The result is a 100% recyclable waste mix". The innovation is to give a different use to this waste than reusing it in the same thing. With the creation of this furniture, a reduction of materials that are not suitable for certain areas is generated and the impact that debris already generates is reduced. María Fernanda mentions that they are reusing approximately 300,000 kilos of debris per year and that only 2% of the 25,000 tons of debris is reused nationwide. Likewise, this innovation generates furniture that is highly resistant to different environments and temperatures, which helps it to last over time and there is no need to change it more frequently. For example, wooden chairs in humid or very rough areas are replaced by concrete chairs with a unique design that will last many more years and does not need constant maintenance. This way, common areas will last much longer and many more people will be able to enjoy these places.

IgNeo uses recyclable CDW, which includes stone waste composed of ceramics, concrete, bricks, sand, gravel, blocks, or fragments of rock, tile, and mortar. The CDW is currently collected from the street in places where it has not had adequate final disposal and is taken to the company to be carefully separated, crushed, screened, and converted into coarse and fine aggregates, which will then be used in the concrete mixtures in which the urban furnishing products are developed.

Since the creation as a company in October 2017, we have transformed around 30 Tons of debris that were collected from the street from works of natural persons and builders, waste used in concrete mixtures (Cement, Water, Coarse and Fine Aggregates from RCD) with which we have manufactured Bollards, Reflectors, Decorative Lighting Poles, Lamps, Signs, Benches, Tables, Counters, Sinks, among others.

Esta innovación se dedica a “mitigar el impacto del escombro en las calles y evitar también el uso de agregados naturales como piedra y arena. El resultado es una mezcla 100% de residuos reciclables”. La innovación es darle un uso diferente a este residuo que reutilizarlo en lo mismo. Con la creación de estos mobiliarios se genera un reducción de materiales que no son adecuados para ciertas zonas y así mismo se reduce el impacto que ya generan los escombros. María Fernanda menciona que ellos al año están reutilizando aproximadamente 300.000 kilos de escombros y que a nivel nacional solo el 2% de las 25 mil toneladas se le da un nuevo uso. Así mismo, con esta innovación se generan mobiliario de alta resistencia a diferentes ambientes y temperaturas que ayudan a que perduren en el tiempo y no haya necesidad de cambiar con mayor frecuencia. Por ejemplo, sillas en madera en zonas húmedas o muy agrestes, son remplazadas por sillas en concreto con un diseño único que durará muchos más años y no necesita un constante mantenimiento. Así zonas comunes perduraran mucho más y muchas más personas podrán disfrutar de estos lugares.

IgNeo utiliza RCD aprovechables en los que se destacan los Residuos Pétreos compuestos por cerámicos, concretos, ladrillos, arenas, gravas, bloques o fragmentos de roca, baldosín y mortero. Los RCD actualmente se recogen de la calle en sitios en los que no han tenido una disposición final adecuada y son llevado a la empresa para ser cuidadosamente Separados, Triturados, Tamizados y convertidos en agregados gruesos y finos, que luego se usarán en las mezclas de concreto en las que se desarrollan los productos de amoblamiento urbano.

Desde la creación como empresa en Octubre del 2017 se han transformado alrededor de 30 Toneladas de escombro que se recogieron de la calle de obras de personas naturales y de constructores, residuos usados en mezclas de concreto (Cemento, Agua, Agregados Gruesos y Finos a partir de RCD) con los que se han fabricado Bolardos, Reflectores, Postes Decorativos de Iluminación, Lámparas, Letreros, Bancas, Mesas, Mesones, Lavamanos, entre otros.

Inspiration

This innovation came from a group of friends who there are designers and engineers living in Barranquilla, Colombia. They began to see the transformation of the city, how the river boardwalk and other common areas of the city were being recovered, but they were seeing that many of the materials that were being used after a short time were already damaged or had already been changed because they no longer worked. This is because the environment in Barranquilla is very humid and there are many salts in the environment that damage many materials.

Seeing all this, this group of friends began to think about how they could create a material that could resist everything, that had design and that was sustainable. So they came to think of concrete, which is already used in many parts of the world to make furniture, but the challenge and the dream were to find a sustainable way to create concrete. So they saw the opportunity in the rubble, which is concrete waste and other materials used in construction. With this waste, they began to conduct tests in order to achieve concrete again without using new resources such as sand and stone, which are the basis of concrete. After two years of testing, they were able to arrive at the right mix that would be used for urban furniture.

Co-founder Maria Fernanda tells that "We started in 2016, we divided into two fronts: one the research and formulation of concrete mixtures with these wastes, and two the design of a portfolio of products where they would be used, so we launched into the market in 2018. We substitute sand and stone for rubble in our mixes, avoiding the exploitation of natural resources, and transform them into final products with Design, hence we are the first company in the Caribbean Region of the circular economy dedicated to the reuse of Rubble for the development of functional products with the added value of Design. Our solutions have high resistance to weathering, and low maintenance cost, especially in coastal areas like ours where it is attacked by corrosion and moisture. Applied in products for urban planning, decoration, and architectural finishes in which stand out: benches, tables, planters, walls, sinks, floors, walls, lattices, among others, for use in public, commercial and residential spaces."

Esta innovación surgió en un grupo de amigos donde hay diseñadores e ingenieros que viven en Barranquilla, Colombia. Ellos comenzaron a ver todo la transformación de la ciudad, como se estaba recuperando el malecón del río y otras zonas comunes de la ciudad, pero estaban viendo que muchos de los materiales que se estaban utilizando después de poco tiempo ya se encontraba dañado o ya había sido cambiado porque ya no funcionaba. Esto se da porque el ambiente de Barranquilla es muy húmedo y en el ambiente hay muchas sales que dañan muchos materiales.

Al ver todo eso, este grupo de amigos se puso a pensar que como podrían crean un material que resistiera todo, que tuviera diseño y que fuera sostenible. Así llegaron a pensar en el concreto que ya en muchas partes del mundo se utiliza para realizar mobiliarios, pero el reto y el sueño era encontrar una forma sostenible de crear el concreto. Entonces, vieron la oportunidad en los escombros que son residuos de concreto y otros materiales que se usan en la construcción. Con estos residuos empezar a realizar pruebas para poder lograr nuevamente concreto sin utilizar nuevos recursos como la arena y la piedra que son la base del concreto. Después de dos años de pruebas lograron llegar a la mezcla adecuada que se utilizaría para mobiliarios urbanos a prueba de todo.

La cofundadora María Fernanda cuenta que “Empezamos en 2016, nos dividimos en dos frentes: uno la investigación y formulación de mezclas de concreto con estos residuos, y dos el diseño de un portafolio de productos donde se utilizaran, así nos lanzamos al mercado en 2018. Sustituimos la arena y la piedra por escombros en nuestras mezclas, evitando la explotación de recursos naturales, y los transformamos en productos finales con Diseño, de ahí que seamos la primera empresa en la Región Caribe de economía circular dedicada a la reutilización de Escombros para el desarrollo de productos funcionales con el valor agregado del Diseño. Nuestras Soluciones tienen alta resistencia a la intemperie, y bajo costo de mantenimiento, especialmente en zonas costeras como la nuestra donde es atacada por la corrosión y la humedad. Aplicado en productos de urbanismo, decoración y acabados arquitectónicos en los que destacan: bancos, mesas, jardineras, muros, lavabos, suelos, paredes, celosías, entre otros, para su uso en espacios públicos, comerciales y residenciales.”

Overall impact

IgNeo's constant innovation process contributes to objective No. 11 of sustainable cities and communities by promoting sustainable urbanization and mitigating the overload of waste, which promotes water and air pollution and affects the quality of life of the population (United Nations, n.d.). Similarly, there is an important contribution to the objective of industry, innovation, and infrastructure by carrying out specific actions such as the incorporation of new technologies and the efficient use of resources, thus achieving new economic dynamics in the region.

Likewise, another of the objectives identified is No. 9 sustainable production and consumption by counteracting impacts such as actions that generate destructive effects on the planet (United Nations, n.d.). Likewise, it mitigates impacts such as environmental degradation by promoting sustainable lifestyles. María Fernanda emphasizes "We replace stone and sand in our concrete mixes with 100% recycled aggregates. We work to minimize the environmental impact caused by construction waste".

El constante proceso de innovación de IgNeo contribuye al objetivo No 11 de ciudades y comunidades sostenibles al promover la urbanización sostenible y mitigando la sobrecarga de residuos, los cuales promueven contaminación del agua, aire y afectación de la calidad de vida de la población (Naciones Unidas, s.f.). De igual forma, hay una contribución importante al objetivo de industria, innovación e infraestructuras al ejercer acciones puntuales como lo son la incorporación de nuevas tecnologías y realizar un uso eficiente de los recursos, logrando así nuevas dinámicas económicas en la región.

Así mismo, otro de los objetivos identificados es el No 9 producción y consumo sostenibles al contrarrestar impactos como acciones que generen efectos destructivos sobre el planeta (Naciones Unidas, s.f.). Del mismo modo, mitiga impactos como la degradación medioambiental, al promover estilos de vida sostenibles. María Fernanda recalca “Reemplazamos la piedra y la arena en nuestras mezclas de concreto por agregados 100% reciclados. Trabajamos por minimizar el impacto ambiental que causan los residuos de construcción”.

Business benefit

In terms of profitability, the business is profitable by making use of raw materials whose cost is minimal and offering sales prices equal to the same products that are made with more expensive materials. "Currently, we are managing a margin of approximately 40% profit and we are projecting sales of approximately 600,000 million pesos for this year," says María Fernanda Vargas.

On the other hand, there is an opportunity to expand not only locally, but also regionally and nationally in the medium term. This also depends in part on the company's production capacity, which is consistent with the company's growth by maximizing its profits. "We are currently expanding in the Caribbean region and we are looking to grow nationally in the coming years," says María Fernanda Vargas.

En términos de rentabilidad el negocio el totalmente beneficioso al hacer uso de materias primas cuyo costo es mínimo y ofrecer precios de venta iguales al de mismos productos que se realizan con materiales mas costosos. De igual forma las proyecciones de venta son muy favorables ya que la compañía tiene constantes oportunidades al ofrecer los productos no solo a empresas, sino también en el sector público, los cual genera infinidades de negocios, ya que la ciudad está en un plan de urbanización muy acelerado desde hace varios años, y que seguirá en la próxima década. “Actualmente, estamos manejando un margen aproximadamente del 40% de utilidad y proyectamos ventas aproximadamente de 600.000 millones de pesos para este año”, dice María Fernanda Vargas.

Por otra parte, existe una oportunidad de expansión no solo a nivel local, sino también de forma regional y nacional en el mediano plazo. Esto depende en parte también de la capacidad productiva de la empresa, lo cual es consecuente con el crecimiento de la empresa al lograr maximizar sus beneficios. “Actualmente, nos estamos expandiendo por la región caribe y estamos en busca de crecer a nivel nacional en los próximos años”, dice María Fernanda Vargas.

Social and environmental benefit

This innovation process has a considerable and progressive impact on the city of Barranquilla because it mitigates the environmental and social impact caused by the more than five hundred thousand tons of debris on average that the city generates monthly, by reusing this material since they are elements that generate pollution in roads, streets, sidewalks and also in terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Likewise, by taking advantage of all these resources, unfavorable sanitation conditions are avoided in the city, which affects the health of the inhabitants and the quality of life.

In recent years, IgNeo has managed to collect about three hundred thousand tons of debris, which represents less than 1% of the material derived from construction in the city of Barranquilla. Because of this, there is a great opportunity to expand its process and positively impact more families and communities. It is also important to highlight that for each new project that the company executes, more than 10 new direct jobs are generated.

Another positive impact is that public street furniture is created with 100% usable materials, avoiding the use of non-renewable resources that cannot be put to any other use. Likewise, when the product reaches its final cycle, it can be reused again to manufacture other types of furniture. "Many of our products are in the common areas of the city of Barranquilla contributing to the infrastructure of the city generating spaces where society can share and enjoy," says co-founder Maria Fernanda Vargas.

This can reach the point where a significant percentage of the urban furniture of the city and its surroundings is generated by debris, and in turn, these can have a new use many years later, thus achieving a constant cycle that lasts over time.

The field of opportunity is so high for IgNeo, that in less than two years, it can reuse more than 10% of the debris that is thrown and abandoned in Barranquilla, of which about 60% are invading the public space of the city. This will increase the improvement in the quality of life of its inhabitants and the ecosystems of the area.

Este proceso de innovación logra impactar de manera considerable y progresiva a la ciudad de Barranquilla, debido a que mitiga el impacto ambiental y social ocasionado por las más de quinientos mil toneladas de escombro en promedio que genera la ciudad mensualmente, al reaprovechar dicho material, ya que son elementos que generan la contaminación en vías, calles, andenes y también en ecosistemas terrestres y marinos. De igual forma, al aprovechar todos estos recursos, se evitan condiciones de saneamiento desfavorables en la ciudad, los cuales conllevan la afectación de la salud de los habitantes y de la calidad de vida.

En los últimos años, IgNeo ha logrado recoger alrededor de trecientos mil toneladas de escombros, lo que representa menos del 1% de material derivado de la construcción en la ciudad de Barranquilla. Debido a esto, existe una gran oportunidad de expandir su proceso e impactar positivamente a mas familias y comunidades. Asi mismo, es importante resaltar que por cada proyecto nuevo que ejecuta la compañía, se generan más de 10 empleos nuevos directos.

Otro impacto positivo es que se crea mobiliario urbano público con materiales 100% aprovechables, evitando el uso de recursos no renovables que no se les pueden dar otro uso. Igualmente, cuando el producto llegue a su ciclo final, puede ser nuevamente reutilizado para la fabricación de otro tipo de mobiliario. “Muchos de nuestros productos se encuentran en las zonas comunes de la ciudad de Barranquilla aportando a la infraestructura de la ciudad generando espacios donde la sociedad puede compartir y disfrutar”, dice la cofundadora María Fernanda Vargas.

Lo anterior puede llegar al punto en donde un porcentaje bastante significativo del mobiliario urbano de la ciudad y los alrededores sea generado por escombros, y a su vez, estos puedan tener un nuevo uso muchos años después, logrando así un ciclo constante y que perdure en el tiempo.

El campo de oportunidad es tan alto para IgNeo, que en menos de dos años, puede llegar a reutilizar mas del 10% de escombros que son arrojados y abandonados en Barranquilla, de los cuales alrededor del 60% se encuentran invadiendo el espacio público de la ciudad. De esta forma, se incrementará la mejora en la calidad de vida de sus habitantes y de los ecosistemas de la zona.
