Urbania café was born as a coffee shop of origin, which sought to stand out for the quality of its products; in their search for excellent coffee, they bought some coffee roasting machines to gain access to producers in the area of Granada, Antioquia. From this point of view, the opportunity was born of helping in the conservation of dangerous species as big felines throughout naturals barries made of coffee plantations, Urbania café is working on 3 main Sustainable Development Goals which are: (15) Life on land ; (12) Responsible consumption and production and (10) Reduced inequalities

Innovation

Urbania had direct contact with the harsh reality of the Colombian countryside and immediately afterward decided to take action and put her grain of coffee in solving a social problem that plagued our country for many decades: they decided to pay better prices to coffee growers, focusing on giving priority to those who are victims of the armed conflict and at the same time that they guarantee a high-quality product. Little by little, they began to train producers in the best cultivation and planting practices to support them and improve the overall process; later, and when expanding in other regions of the country, they found in coffee an opportunity as a natural barrier in the protection of certain species of large carnivores in the San Lucas mountains: such as tigers, jaguars, tigrillos, Andean bears, among others. This opportunity has been developed in association with WebConserva, an independent foundation with several years of experience in the defense and protection of the big cats and the Andean bears in the area. In this way, coffee becomes a vital tool in the protection of these exceptional animals and the farmers and livestock of the area.

Inspiration

A country rich in flora and fauna, which is capable of producing the best types of coffee in the world on daily basis, must work to continue being an international benchmark, managing to bring to each consumer a unique experience and tell the story behind each bean of harvested coffee, that is why Urbania Café strives to provide guidance, support, higher payments and allow growers to have a better quality of life, but their dream does not end here, that is why they work on the conservation of ecosystems and in their project in the Serranía de Lucas Department of Bolívar, where good practices and monitoring of the forest allow them to obtain an excellent coffee bean and additionally conserve wildlife, especially large carnivores that inhabit the surrounding forest.

Quote from the interviewee: “Many of our clients are companies, like us, small roasters, in the United States, who want to know where it comes from, who produced it, what project it supports, if it is a fair trade product or not, if it is a product that is preventing deforestation, all that ... "

Overall impact

Urbania is dedicated to roasting and marketing coffee with allied coffee growers that allow them to establish processes from each bean to the cup, taking care of the authenticity of the product they offer, thus achieving excellent coffee qualities and helping to strengthen the local peasant economy. They offer unique experiences around Colombian coffee and transform the country's tradition into unique experiences, believing in the solidarity economy, fair trade, and productive practices.

Urbania contributes to positively impact the recovery of illicit crops, increase income to coffee growers who are carrying out differentiated post-harvest processes, and organic pest control and fertilization processes. This optimization of processes helps to reduce water consumption.

With coffee crops and non-deforestation commitments, the buffer barrier between the reserve areas between jaguars and livestock areas is promoted, with which illegal hunting of these is reduced.

Business benefit

The San Lucas mountain range has been an area highly affected by deforestation that is accelerating because of the extensive livestock, informal mining, and crops for illicit use, the mountain range is located in the area of the Magdalena forest reserve declared through law 2 of 1959, over the years and after the signing of the peace agreement, there have been projects generated through agriculture, which seek that the population demobilized by the conflict can be reintegrated into society, especially families located in zones apt for coffee production.

Julian Gamboa Urbania Café Impact Manager, with great enthusiasm, tells us that Urbania sees “coffee as a tool to generate a positive impact by avoiding deforestation and conserving ecosystems and fauna”, the environmental project that began 2 years ago contains a large social component, contributing to the conservation of the endangered species like the jaguar by supporting the maintenance of an environmental barrier in 200 hectares of the 1,200 that they estimate include the mountainous area (Colombia only has 3% of protected areas for habitat Jaguar).

Additionally, 7% of coffee comes from shady crops that do not require the use of insecticides, which allows a more organic coffee with a payment of 10% above the average for growers and benefit 8 families. Urbania contributes by working with small coffee growers who have 2 hectares of cultivation, to improve the marketing processes they acquired a roaster and manage to reach the final consumer at their points of sale and through export processes.

Quote from the interviewee: "Coffee growers and peasants are looking for options that dignify their work and make it economically viable ..."

Social and environmental benefit

The Serrania de San Lucas is one of the most important patches within the so-called Jaguar Corridor, for which the conservation and recovery of the habitat for these big cats are imperative. Therefore, by promoting coffee crops in a sustainable and organic way, creating natural barriers to naturally separate jaguars from humans and their agricultural and livestock activities, their conservation is promoted and avoided.

Urbania’s business model is designed to generate a positive social and environmental impact on the communities and ecosystems that they work and interact with. Across our retail and supply chain operations, we make every effort possible to mitigate and reduce any negative impact that our daily activities may generate. We call this model “Café Consciente” (“Conscious Coffee”) and we have aligned it with 3 of the 17 objectives of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. These three are Reduced Inequalities (#10), Responsible Production and Consumption (#12), and Life on Land (#15). To maintain our accountability and seek continuous improvement within our operations, we have developed a set of key performance indicators (KPIs) that we track and analyze monthly

The conservation project in the Serranía de San Lucas through its strategies for the conservation of jaguar habitats “umbrella” species is supported. This is achieved thanks to non-deforestation commitments that are established with coffee growers in the area, wildlife monitoring through camera traps, and the use of coffee as a buffer between reserve areas and livestock areas.
