Summary

The achievement of peace has been a challenge throughout the world, but in a country such as Colombia, which has suffered for more than 50 years of internal conflict, this search is much more relevant. This can be seen more closely in San Vicente del Caguán, Colombia, where its nearly 70,000 inhabitants had to suffer closely the 485 armed actions that occurred only between 1990 and 2013, its inhabitants have lived and seen the war, stigmatization and state forgetfulness.

For this reason, and thanks to the Territorial Spaces for Training and Reincorporation provided by the Colombian government, it has been possible to carry out actions to consolidate the disarmament process through initiatives that seek to reincorporate into society all these people who directly or indirectly have been victims of this horrendous war.

Caguán Expeditions was born with the objective of demonstrating that changing weapons for oars is an option of life and reconciliation for all these victims, it also innovates by uniting the ecotourism of the Pato River and all its flora and fauna with the extreme adventure that is led by former FARC combatants who through the realization of each activity tell the story of this part of Colombia isolated because of the war, According to Freyin Alberto Noreña Ochoa, a person in the process of reincorporation, "With Caguán Expeditions we have made sure that the environment is preserved in this territory, we promote love for the rivers, for nature and we have tried to protect the environment in every sense in order to develop our tourist and cultural projects".

--------

Innovation

"Caguán Expeditions, aims to transform the territory through ecotourism," these words of Carlos García, Manager and Co-Founder, show the reason why this business is innovative, because it gives a sustainable use to nature through adventure tourism and ecotourism, that was previously closed off by the war.

This project not only offers a tourism plan, but also integrates the local knowledge of the people who live in and know the territory, generating a link and roots in their communities. That is where the former FARC combatants play a fundamental role generating a culture of economy based on all the derivatives of tourism as a great source of growth for the community. "It is important that the solutions that are designed for the environment and care of nature are designed from the territory. When I speak from the territory, I mean that the memories of the grandfathers and grandmothers who inhabited the territories are valued and collected, because each territory has a knowledge and a living wisdom that is there. That knowledge is on the way to extinction. Colombia has the luxury of living elders and indigenous people who are wise libraries, open to share the knowledge of nature that they have cared for during thousands of years." -Carlos Garcia Co-Founder

-----

Inspiration

This project was born from the need to provide former FARC combatants who participated in the process of laying down their weapons in Miravalle (San Vicente del Caguán - Caquetá, Colombia) in 2017, a new life alternative without leaving their territory - returning them to society without being removed from their roots, and with the full conviction that second chances do exist and even more so when they are developed on ideas and experiences that contribute to society.

Carlos García, Co-Founder and Director, mentioned, "One day when we were together we were talking about what was going to happen when they surrendered their weapons; they already had some fish farming, land cultivation and agriculture projects in place, but they had no ecotourism projects. I had the idea of showing them my phone with some rafting pictures and I suggested they try this river; this river looks good. I asked them, how well do you know this river and they answered, We know this river from day to night, from head to toes, with our elbows, with our nose, from top to bottom. That was when we started with the materialization of this idea."

It is a project that not only supports former combatants, but also provides opportunities for growth and inclusion to a population that has been excluded by society due to the war and that integrates ecotourism as its main attraction. Allowing people to see the other side of this part of Colombia through the experiences of its own victims removes the perception of violence and transforms it into opportunities for peace and repentance.

This initiative incorporates the factors that are key for ex-combatants to achieve their social transformation according to its Co-Founder and Director, Carlos Garcia, "We believe that every encounter between visitors, travelers and communities represents a profound experience of coexistence, learning and peace. We believe that nature and adventure tourism are a tool for social, economic and environmental transformation of the territory. We assume responsibility for the visits and travel experiences with the greatest logistical security, with the ideal preparation and with a deep love and respect for nature."

--------

Overall impact

Caguán Expeditions seeks the transformation of geographical frontiers of war into scenarios of peace, through ecotourism plans lead by former FARC combatants, allowing these people to reincorporate into society and to contribute their knowledge of the flora and their understanding of the territory, directly supporting the Sustainable Development Goals.

Providing ex-combatants with a new job allows them to see that there are new opportunities beyond forced labor, which is why this project contributes to SDG No. 8, since it provides healthy and inclusive working conditions and under the guidelines of a safe working environment, as well as allowing ex-combatants to work under the same guidelines as civilians, contributes to reducing inequality gaps - SDG No. 10.

By designing travel experiences of contact and immersion with nature, this project has the duty to give back to the environment something from which they benefit, and it is for this reason that each expedition works on monitoring biodiversity and measuring the flow of the duck river - contributing to SDG No. 15.

Caguán Expeditions allows people who have left their weapons behind to be part of this project and to integrate and show that there is a new way to tell their story and contribute to peace in Colombia in a non-violent way and thus heal their wounds and traumas - contributing to SDG Nº 16. The latter is based on what Edgar Portela, former FARC guerrilla mentioned, "Caguán Expeditions has taught us to have another business idea, to build peace and to build our territory, where people can come and see what we are building in our territory."

--------

Business benefit

Caguán Expedition has faced many challenges and gone through many processes to build this project after having to start from scratch without experience and minimum infrastructure for the safe and appropriate development of rafting. They were able to get together with instructors from SENA specialized in Rafting, who through visits and classes were able to issue a favorable concept on the Pato River route. In this way and through the accompaniment and support of Rafael Gallo, an international expert and founder of the rafting and adventure company in Costa Rica, Rios Tropicales, and the first honorary president of the International Rafting Federation, has managed to get former FARC combatants certified in Rafting, in a project called "Rowing for Peace", where instructors from Costa Rica support these tutorials and allow them to obtain licenses as rafting guides.

Currently and after the aforementioned efforts made by the project managers, who not only had to overcome difficulties in the ecological and business environment, but also some social inconveniences such as the desertion of some members of the project and seeing some of its managers return to the war. Caguán Expeditions has today more than 1,500 visitors, of whom 15% are from different countries which has generated exposure in different world media such as: The Economist and the Discovery Channel, among others.

Caguán Expeditions has had an increase in sales during 2018, with positioning activities locally and nationally, "We have had growth from 2019 to 2020 higher than 100%, in percentage traits our biggest growth was in 2019 where the rafting festival began to gain importance", explains Carlos Garcia. As a result of the good results and the trust and reputation obtained, the managers visualize the project not only as an ecotourism destination for rafting, but also the creation of the training center and activities of the Pato River, the construction of Ecolodges and Ecohabs that connect nature with a quality experience. This opens the spectrum of the project in the medium term and even the possibility of consolidating the first thematic Ecopark in Caquetá and putting it on the radar internationally as an example of social reintegration and Peace.

The company currently has 20 employees, including people in the reincorporation process, local communities in the Pato region, professionals and technicians in rafting and other extreme sports. In addition, they have already participated in several editions of the main national tourism fair, called Vitrina Turística, organized by Anato.

Social and environmental benefit

Located in southern Colombia in the Amazon region with a population of approximately 410,521 habitants, is the department of Caquetá, which has suffered more than 50 years of armed conflict in Colombia, where it is said that between 1998 and 2002, the homicides in the different municipalities of the department exceeded the national rate.

One of those municipalities is San Vicente Del Caguán, the second most important city both in population and economically in the Colombian Amazon region, but also throughout history was home to a large number of outlaw groups such as the FARC, who with the purpose of fighting for the end of inequities, forgetfulness and inequalities of the Colombian state, took up arms. In 2016, after the signing of the peace agreement with the FARC, more than 60,000 former combatants joined a process of reintegration into society generating new opportunities in this battered territory. That is where Caguán Expedition makes sense and adds value for this society.

The water sources of Caguán are one of its geological strengths, where the Yarí River, Caguán River, Tunia River and of course the Pato River stand out, where the main activity of Caguán Expedition is developed, which has a privileged location. "We are located in the buffer strip that borders with the National Natural Park Los Picachos, what we have done is to guard this reserve area; we are a kind of guardians of that border." Where the main function of this group of company collaborators who know the waterway in depth to carry out not only ecological tourism activities, but also as the project director mentions: "We do exercises of characterization and monitoring of flora and fauna. When we go on expeditions we do monitoring, we record the species, where and when we saw them, monitoring biodiversity," This creates a record and measurement of what must be preserved. They also monitor that there are no sewage leaks from the community that could affect the ecosystem.
