Summary

The social market in Colombia is constantly growing: the directory-guide of non-profit entities 2002-2004 (Codesarrollo, 2002) had registered 2,736 ESAL in the year of publication of its directory. Of that total, 1,767 (65%) belong to the Andean region (Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Eje Cafetero, etc.) and the remaining 35% to the other four Colombian regions (Atlántica, Amazónica, Pacífica and Orinoquía).

All these organizations work independently and disarticulated, in constant search of resources and volunteers who contribute in money or in kind to contribute to their social work. NIBI is the first social platform that integrates and promotes sustainable consumption, facilitating the social work of non-profit organizations and responsible brands.

This says Ignacio Rubio, co-Founder of NIBI: "we are inspired to see so many problems, but also the nice side of the coin: to see so many solutions there are currently. There are many people who wake up every day to solve these problems, to improve the living conditions of household mothers, to close those gaps with respect to gender equality (...)."

Innovation

NIBI’s innovation can be identified on two fronts: a platform that allows foundations or non-profit organizations to integrate, and the NIBI points that encourage the participation of social causes and the consumption of products that are socially and environmentally responsible and within their network of sustainable businesses.

For Ignacio Rubio, "our NIBIS or virtual points tend to be one of the most innovative features that have made us creditors of certain recognition in innovation issues because that is something that had not been seen in the industry or social sector."

Inspiration

This story begins with the initiative of two young Colombians who, thanks to their experiences and their desire to transform the world, sought to add the impact of sustainability, innovation and technology, with actions that promote aid and cooperation towards a common good. The word NIBI comes from Ethiopia which means bee, and is related to the action of pollinating good deeds through technology, From this, they ventured into the development of initiatives of support and social management that could generate a change in people's way of thinking, with opportunities to get involved in experiences of high social and environmental impact.

Ignacio Rubio mentions that "[there is] the desire to transform the world through what they do in their daily lives. One is related to environmental issues and the other is much more related to social causes, but with the same objective that is ultimately sustainability and achieving impact actions."

Overall impact

The value generated by NIBI is reflected in the development of technology that allows people and companies to relate to those foundations that work towards causes of high social and environmental impact, aligning with company strategies and the Sustainable Development Goals. NIBI creates the digital ecosystem that facilitates interactions and promotes sustainable consumption with responsible brands. In principle, it's about bringing volunteers and organizations together in initiatives and projects that add to a common good with more responsible practices in the public and in the structures of organizations, allowing the donor or volunteer to choose and know the impact of their donation or aid.

Currently, NIBI is the channel that contributes to the achievement of SDG #17. They are characterized by building a future through conscious and responsible tourism, and for this, they were recognized worldwide with the SDGs Global Startup Competition award. They also have received other national and international recognition that highlight their great work:

• Bolivar Davivienda Foundation - Social Skin: 2018 Finalist

• SAP Innomarathon: 2019 Finalist

• World Economic Forum -Shapers Impact Capital: 2020 Finalist

• BeChargeMaker 2021 - WorldSkills & HP Foundation - 2021 Finalist

• MassChallenge Mexico 2021 cohort - 2021 Finalists

According to Ignacio Rubio, "we are constantly generating a lot of value, and those possible synergies that have been created through the work we're doing is very valuable in the social and impact ecosystem in Colombia and Latin America."

Business benefit

The NIBI business model consists of charging a fee for all transactions they receive on the platform for donations, sales and other transactions. Additionally, there is the SAAS plan which is a monthly subscription Freemium model, in order to improve and enable some features of the platform. These strategies have allowed them to have a solid business model and, also, throughout the year 2021, have managed to close investments for more than USD $60,000. For Ignacio Rubio, "we are in the process of getting the two things to coexist, both the social impact and the economic part."

Social and environmental benefit
