Summary

“It has not been easy to change the chip, as any product requires a good design, at first they called it bad when the design was improved the product began to gain more strength. Many companies have natural wood, which is a global resource, this natural wood comes from cutting down forests, we substitute this cutting down of trees by taking advantage of recycled plastic material. " Roberto Leon Arce, Son

Layco SAS is a company committed to the care and preservation of the environment, through the manufacture of products made of virgin plastic, industrial recycling, and 100% ecological and recyclable products. Currently, this company stands out for being friendly with the environment, by providing effective and innovative solutions to all its customers, offering multiple alternatives for the construction and use of structures, floors, walls, among many other applications that plastic wood allows.

Innovation

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Plastic is not bad, the mistake is not having a correct use of the final disposal (recycling), we must organize ourselves in a better way so that we are more efficient and can take advantage of this resource." Roberto Leon Arce, Jr.

The innovation presented by Layco SAS consists of the transformation of plastic, starting from a bonding process, where the size of the particle is changed and it is conditioned for the extrusion phase, thus allowing the production of plastic wood for subsequent assembly and assembly of the final product.

In the production phase, the waste continues in the process; that is, the waste never leaves the factory, there is a total use of the plastic raw material and there is also an after-sales service that consists of collecting the products damaged by natural use, thus closing the recycling cycle and incorporating this material again to the manufacturing process of new products.

Inspiration

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Our start was with a commercial focus. However, weaknesses in the wooden pallets were identified, innovation at this time was not easy, and environmental management has been done over time ” Roberto Leon Arce, Jr.

The innovation of this Vallecaucana company emerged 17 years ago as a family business led by Roberto León Patacón, whose initial objective was the commercialization of pallets in natural wood. However, with the passing of time when the weaknesses of the raw material used were identified, Layco SAS decided to venture into the use of plastic as a substitute for wood.

Additionally, under the implementation of resolution 1407, Layco SAS saw the opportunity to be transformers of solid plastic waste, since this resolution requires the entire production chain to adopt a comprehensive management program for the adequate disposal of post-industrial waste.

Overall impact

"Plastic is incinerated or taken to landfills, with the transformation to plastic wood the environmental benefit is evidenced" Roberto Leon Arce, Jr.

In Colombia, there is an approximate consumption of 24 kilos of plastics per capita per year and single-use plastics correspond to approximately 56% of total consumption. Globally, the production and burning of plastics are projected to emit as many greenhouse gases by the end of 2019 as nearly 200 coal-fired plants. Additionally, it is estimated that by 2050 there will be 12 billion tons of plastic waste in natural environments.

In accordance with the above, Layco SAS, aims to use plastic waste as an input or raw material for the generation of its final product (plastic wood), this being a substitute for natural wood in all its operations.

This initiative, when implemented and used in large Colombian companies such as Rimax, Alpina, Bavaria, EPSA, Colombina, Azúcar Manuelita, and Cruz Roja, which have bet on the use of alternative materials that are friendly to the environment within their infrastructure and logistics operation, has generated awareness in society and the business sector regarding environmental care, efficient use of resources and sustainable and egalitarian economic growth.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Layco SAS as a social benefit contributes to Development Goal number 8 "Decent work and economic growth" by providing direct employment to 50 male and female workers. Within this team of employees, the participation and formalization of the work of recyclers stand out, guaranteeing a decent salary and working conditions. According to Roberto Leon Arce Son, “the recycler has [the] knowledge and it is an art to classify plastics.”

Similarly, this company provides support to recycling cooperatives, a collection center, and plastic processing industries located in Valle del Cauca, through the purchase of their raw material. Currently, this company participates in the donation of construction materials to the organization “Techo para mi País,” thus promoting the construction of houses for vulnerable populations in popular settlements.

By using plastic as raw material, Layco SAS annually avoids the felling of about 1,200 trees and the incineration or final disposal in sanitary landfills of 2,400 tons of plastic, thus contributing to the Development Objectives number 13 "Action for the climate" and number 15 "Life of Ecosystems." These environmental benefits help to offset Colombia's current annual forest loss rate of 0.8%, or the equivalent to about 500 thousand hectares due to deforestation and forest degradation.
