Okolo's Innovation is the design and manufacture of bamboo-based diapers, which makes the experience totally different since they are washable and have a specialized and unique system in the market for greater absorption and safety of babies. Furthermore, they are not only practical and useful but are personalized and come in several designs. In addition, each cloth is highly absorbent because it has an insert of 7 sewn layers, this is an exclusive feature of Ókolo diapers. It must be changed every 4 hours like any other diaper and, in order to wash it, you just have to remove the residue, disinfect and put it directly in the washing machine like any other clothing. Bamboo filters are placed on top of the diaper to separate the solid residues from the diaper; these are biodegradable wipes and with them, we prevent the diaper from getting dirty so you have a better experience in the use of diapers without having to invest extra time to scrub and wash by hand.

Just 12 ecological diapers are needed for the whole life of the baby. This diaper can be adjusted as it grows in height and width, and they are made of natural fibers called bamboo carbon fiber, which makes it much more sustainable for the planet. Each diaper lasts five years, a well-cared-for diaper can be used by three children. At the end of the Ókolo diaper life, it can be taken to recycling centers where they shred the diapers to create other products. Using the Ókolos diapers, the environment avoided having the harm of 20 million disposable diapers.

Katherine Correa comments “An important part behind the increase in the supply of ecological and environment-friendly products is the change in consumer behavior in Colombia and other countries in the world, a trend that was strengthened, especially during the pandemic. 43% of global consumers expect companies to be responsible for their environmental impact, while 45% have chosen to reduce the use of single-use plastics in their daily lives.”

La Innovación de Okolo es el diseño y fabricación de Pañales a base de Bambú lo que hace que la experiencia sea totalmente distinta ya que son lavables y cuentan con un sistema especializado y único en el mercado para mayor absorción y seguridad de los bebes, adicionalmente no solo son prácticos y útiles, sino que los pañales tienen diferentes diseños y son personalizados, por otro lado cada pañal es altamente absorbente por lo que cuenta con un inserto de 7 capas de tela cosidas, exclusivo de Ókolo, se debe cambiar cada 3 a 4 horas como cualquier pañal y para lavarlo solo debes retirar los residuos, desinfectar y llevar directo en la lavadora como cualquier prenda. Los filtros de bambú se colocan encima del pañal para separar los sólidos del pañal, estos son toallitas biodegradables y con ellos evitamos que el pañal se ensucie, así se tiene una mejor experiencia en el uso de los pañales sin tener que invertir tiempo extra para refregar y lavar a mano.

Solo se necesitan 12 pañales ecológicos para toda la vida del bebé. Este pañal se puede ir ajustando a medida que va creciendo de alto y de ancho, y están hechos de fibras naturales que se llaman fibra de carbono de bambú que lo hace mucho más sustentable para el planeta. Cada pañal dura cinco años, un pañal bien cuidado se puede alcanzar para tres niños, después de esto pueden llevarse a los lugares donde reciclan telas y ellos desfibran los pañales y crean otros productos. Se han dejado de usar 20 millones de pañales desechables en el país con el uso de nuestros productos.

Una parte importante tras el aumento en la oferta de productos ecológicos y amables con el medio ambiente es el cambio de comportamiento de los consumidores en Colombia y los demás países del mundo, tendencia que se fortaleció, especialmente, durante la pandemia. “El 43% de los consumidores mundiales esperan que las empresas sean responsables de su impacto ambiental, mientras que 45% ha optado por disminuir el uso de plásticos de uno solo uso en su cotidianidad.” Comenta Katherine Correa

Inspiration

Okolo was born 6 years ago in the department of Antioquia, with the mindset of being the number one substitute for disposable diapers in Colombia. Okolo additionally helps many families financially since buying ecological diapers saves 70% of the money spent on diapers. These ecological diapers are designed to fit babies in all stages of their childhood from newborn to 3 years old; they are made of natural fibers such as carbonized bamboo, which has anti-allergic and anti-fungal properties, protecting the baby's skin since it does not require the use of creams for diaper rash.

The creator of Okolo came up with this venture working on her own needs when she became pregnant with her first child in 2016. She became an entrepreneur woman that was aware of the care of the planet, and decided to start this path by showing society the importance of using these products that are not only ecological and have a positive impact on the environment, but also support the economy of middle-income families through the substantial savings for approximately 3 years, so Katherine firmly followed her conviction.

Today more than 3,300 families in the country decided to use Ókolo ecological diapers, and they avoided throwing more than 20 million disposable diapers in the trash. An ecological diaper replaces more than 1,000 disposable diapers, reducing the number of diapers that dumps receive in one year in Colombia.

Okolo nació hace 6 años en el departamento de Antioquia, pensado en ser el sustituto de pañales desechables número uno en Colombia y adicional ayudar económicamente a muchas familias ya que comprando pañales ecológicos ahorran un 70%, estos pañales ecológicos están pensados en ajustarse a los bebes en todas las etapas de su niñez desde recién nacido hasta los 3 años, estos pañales están hechos de fibras naturales como lo es el Bambú carbonizado, tiene propiedades antialérgicas y antihongos, protegiendo la piel del bebé ya que no requiere del uso de cremas anti-pañalitis.

A la creadora de Okolo se le ocurrió esta emprendimiento supliendo sus propias necesidades ya que quedó embarazada de su primer hijo Matías en el año 2016, siendo una mujer emprendedora y consiente con el cuidado del planeta decidió iniciar este camino mostrándole a la sociedad la importancia de usar estos productos que no solo son ecológicos e impactan positivamente en el medio ambiente, sino que apoya a la economía de los hogares de estrato bajo y medio mediante el sustancial ahorro que tienen estas familias durante 3 años aproximadamente, por eso Katherine siguió firmemente con esta convicción y emprendimiento.

Hoy más de 3.300 familias en el país decidieron usar los pañales ecológicos Ókolo, dejando de botar más 20 millones de pañales desechables a la basura. Un pañal ecológico reemplaza más de 1,000 pañales desechables, disminuyendo la cifra de los 1,088 millones de pañales que Reciben los vertederos en un año en Colombia.

“Estamos logrando un sueño con ayuda de todas las familias que han decidido unirse a este estilo de vida sostenible, ayudamos juntos al planeta y hacemos que muchas familias colombianas ahorren dinero y se concienticen que tenemos que entregarle un mejor planeta a nuestros hijos y a su vez haciendo que esos niños de alguna forma crezcan pensando en cuidar el mundo en el que viven.” comenta Katherine Correa.

Overall impact

Okolo helps the environment through ecological diapers, impacting ODS 6 since water plays an important and indispensable role at the time of manufacturing disposable diapers, which is why 545 liters of water are needed for manufacturing. Okolo changes this vision with its diapers showing water savings of 15 liters per diaper, positively impacting the saving and care of our most precious asset, water. On the other hand, Okolo contributes to the manufacture of ecological diapers to ODS 15 since the felling of trees is an essential factor for the manufacture of disposable diapers and the use of it by a child 0-3 years corresponds to 10 felled trees, Okolo generates change with its innovation because those diapers are already 100% ecological, made with natural products, without harming the environment or even having animal cruelty.

Katherine Correa says “for the production of 7,000 diapers, approximately 10 trees are cut down for a single baby, the equivalent of a million trees in a year”.

Disposable diapers occupy too much space in dumps since they are deposited for a long time in the surrounding areas of the city. They give off a liquid that is made up of toxic chemicals (leaching) that seep into the ground. Okolo, on the other hand, contributes to ODS-11 since it occupies little space for dumps and sanitary landfills, they do not take many years to decompose, are reusable, and have a useful life of up to 8 years. The use of 5 ecological diapers for 1 child for 3 years, is an advance and helps the environment.

Katherine Correa mentions “Let’s keep in mind that a disposable diaper takes up to 500 years to disintegrate, and even if it is thrown into plastic bags, it will not have the normal means to decompose such as light and oxygen exposure, those facts will delay the degradation process for so many years.”

Okolo ayuda al medio ambiente por medio de los pañales ecológicos impactando al ODS 6, ya que el agua juega un papel importante e indispensable en el momento de la fabricación de los pañales desechables por lo que para la fabricación se necesitan 545 litros de agua, Okolo cambia esta visión con sus pañales generando ahorro de agua a 15 litros por pañal, impactando positivamente a ahorro y cuidado de nuestro bien más preciado, el agua., por otro lado Okolo contribuye en su fabricación de pañales ecológicos al ODS 15, ya que la tala de árboles es un factor indispensable para la fabricación de pañales desechables y el uso de ello por un niño 0-3 años hace que corresponda 10 árboles talados, Okolo llega a generar el cambio con su innovación ya son pañales 100% ecológicos, fabricados con productos naturales, sin crueldad animal y daño al medio ambiente. “Para la producción de 7.000 pañales, se talan aproximadamente 10 árboles para un solo bebé, lo equivalente a un millón de árboles en un año”, dice Katherine Correa

Los pañales desechables ocupan demasiado espacio en los basureros y rellenos, ya que cuando quedan depositados es por largo tiempo en los sitios aledaños de ciudad, emanan un líquido que se compone de químicos tóxicos(lixiviados) que se filtran en la tierra. Okolo llega a aportar al ODS 11 ya que genera poco uso de basureros y rellenos sanitarios, no generan una descomposición de muchos años ya que al ser reutilizables tienen una vida útil hasta de 8 años. Uso de 5 pañales ecológicos para 1 niño por 3 años, es un avance y ayuda al medio ambiente. “Recordemos que un pañal desechable se demora 500 años en desintegrarse, y aunque se tire dentro de bolsas plásticas, no va a tener los medios normales para descomponerse como son luz y oxígeno, lo que va a retrasar el proceso de degradación en muchísimos años.” dice Katherine Correa

Business benefit

Okolo, in the beginning, was not an easy project. Katherine started this project and she remembers that she was broke when she began. After an e-commerce business that did not raise, Katherine took a loan of 300 USD that she had on her credit card and bought the materials that she needed to make ecological diapers. Thus, she started Ókolo, a business that grew thanks to the support of her relatives, who contributed with their own resources to produce diapers as the demand increased. In its beginnings, they invoiced sales for between 150 and 200 USD. From there, they grew until reaching billings of 900 and 1200 USD monthly. Katherine said that in 2020 they had their greatest growth since the pandemic raised the environmental awareness of many people.

Okolo is a good business, and it has grown fast after the pandemic. This company brings awareness to consumers of disposable diapers and the ecological and moral need to take care of the planet. On the other hand, economically it has also grown substantially, being profitable, so it has sold almost 40,000 diapers and the goal this year is to sell 50k USD, about 15,300 diapers a year. Okolo wants each baby in Colombia to have their kit of 12 ecological diapers, so far they have been welcomed by more than 3,300 families. There is acceptance in low-income families for savings, while with disposable diapers you can spend up to USD 2,000 in three years, with ecological ones you only have to invest USD 200 for a kit of 12 diapers that last five years.

Katherine Correa commented “I am aware that this growth implies new challenges for my family business, since at some point my own resources will be insufficient to respond to all orders and I will need an injection of capital to consolidate this business.”

Okolo, en sus inicios no fue fácil un proyecto fácil ya que ponerlo en marcha Katherine recuerda que estaba recién saliendo de una quiebra cuando se aventuró a emprender nuevamente. Luego de un negocio de e-commerce que no dio frutos, Katherine tomó el cupo de 2 millones y medio que tenía en una tarjeta de crédito y compró los materiales que necesitaba para elaborar los pañales ecológicos. Así comenzó Ókolo, un emprendimiento que fue creciendo gracias al apoyo de sus familiares, quienes aportaron recursos propios para continuar con la producción de pañales a medida que iba aumentando la demanda. En sus inicios facturaban ventas por entre 600 y 800 mil pesos. De ahí, fueron creciendo hasta alcanzar facturaciones por 3 y 5 millones de pesos. Pero fue en el año 2020 cuando tuvieron su mayor crecimiento, relata Katherine, puesto que la pandemia despertó la conciencia ambiental de muchas personas.

Okolo es un buen negocio, ya que ha tenido un crecimiento acelerado después de la pandemia en el despertó a los consumidores de pañales desechables la necesidad ecológica y moral de cuidar el planeta, por otro lado, económicamente también ha crecido sustancialmente siendo rentable por lo que ha vendido casi 40.000 pañales y la meta este año es vender $200 millones, unos 15.300 pañales al año. Okolo quiere que cada bebé en Colombia tenga su kit de 12 pañales ecológicos, por ahora han sido acogidos por más 3.300 familias. Hay acogida en estratos bajos por el ahorro, mientras con pañales desechables se puede gastar hasta $7 millones en tres años, con los ecológicos solo se tiene que invertir $889.000 para un kit de 12 pañales que duran cinco años. “Soy consciente de que este crecimiento implica nuevos retos para mi emprendimiento familiar, ya que en algún punto será insuficientes mis recursos propios para responder con todos los pedidos y necesitaré una inyección de capital para consolidar su negocio.” comentó Katherine Correa.

Social and environmental benefit

Okolo ecological diapers generate great benefits for the environmental impact in our country since it exposes several types of benefits and savings that make them the best fit for families that use these kinds of products. Okolo helps society by saving and reducing plastic consumption, as around 30 kilos of plastic (with packaging) are used yearly by a baby in disposable diapers. It also helps with the reduction and use of 270 kilos of cotton and other padding materials per year with 45% more water with cloth diapers than with disposable ones (even washing them in a washing machine), with 80% cutting down trees in our country, with 78% of waste that lasts more than 500 years decomposing in landfills, and with 545 liters in the manufacture of a disposable diaper. Also, something very important is that Okolo diapers generate economic savings for families since you will only spend approximately USD 200 on ecological diapers compared to USD 2000 on disposable diapers.

Katherine, the entrepreneur, highlights “There are many families who prefer the ease of disposables, but there are others, like the new generations, who prefer to take a little more time when using a cloth diaper because they know they are contributing to the environment, stop producing so much waste.”

Okolo pañales ecológicos genera beneficios grandes al impacto ambiental en nuestro país, ya que muestra los diferentes tipos de ahorros y aportes que realiza a las familias que usan estos productos, Okolo ayuda a la sociedad mediante el ahorro y disminución de consumo de plástico, alrededor de 30 kilos de plástico (con embalaje) al año para abastecer un bebé con pañales desechables. También ayuda con la disminución y uso de 270 kilos de algodón y otros materiales de relleno al año con 45% de agua con los pañales de tela que con los desechables (aún lavándolos en lavadora), con el 80% de tala de árboles en nuestro país, con el 78% de desechos que duran más de 500 años en descomposición en basureros, también con 545 litros en la fabricación de un pañal desechable y algo muy importante genera ahorro económico para las familias ya que, por 3 años de vida de los bebes, solo se tendrá un gasto aproximado de $500.000COP en pañales ecológicos en comparación de $6.000.000COP en pañales desechables.

“Hay muchas familias que prefieren la facilidad de los desechables, pero hay otras, como las nuevas generaciones, que prefieren tomarse un poquito más de tiempo al usar un pañal de tela porque saben que están contribuyendo con el medioambiente, dejando de producir tanta basura”, resalta la emprendedora Katherine.
