Summary

The metal casting process has sand as a waste product, once the automotive part has been manufactured. So Mario from Nemak, together with his team were able to find a second use for that "waste sand"

Innovation

The waste sand is treated, separated, cleaned, and categorized. Once it meets the minimum standards for its use, the same sand that was before considered "waste" can be used again.

Nemak - Reusable waste casting sand

Inspiration

The supply chain impact of using the common sand. Its lead time is around 6-8 weeks plus the high costs of using such sand. Besides, once you use the sand once, you need to specially confine it somewhere...but where?

Overall impact

The numbers: more than 50k Tons of sand are reused, therefore you consume less sand.

Carbon footprint: no more large amount of delivery trucks bringing the sand from the supplier's location.

Confinement: no need to worry about confinement because you first use the "raw" sand, then you keep reusing it, this means no need to worry about safely confining the material because it is always in the process.

Business benefit

Cost: less sand purchases (more than 50% savings)

Environment: less sand needed to be mined

Social: no more confinement problems, less pollution

Transportation: less transportation trucks needed, since the requirement volumes are less than 50%
