Innovation

In accordance with Marta Turok “The art of weaving is a gift that the Mesoamerican gods gave to the indigenous hands of our country, dedicated for years to plotting and weaving their environment, their history and their vision of the world. Today textiles, more than a handicraft, are a cultural heritage that defines and identifies us as Mexicans ”- Marta Turok W. / Revolución Mexicanísimo, No. 96, 2016

Grecia Mondragón, through its company Nahui by GM, employs single mothers and elderly women from marginalized communities. These women are in charge of giving the unique and special touch to each hat that the CEO of the company has designed since 2018.

“Working with them is nice, but it is complicated because the tradition for them is to weave colorfully, there are no rules, they weave what they want, what they remember at the time with the thread they get. It does not matter that I send them the nude color palette, they weave yellow, green, pink, it is their way of expressing themselves ”, the interviewee emphasized with much encouragement.

Likewise, Grecia tells that "it is very beautiful because all hats are different, those that are hand-painted and those that have woven ribbons, none will be identical because, as knitting is something manual, it is impossible for you to keep them identical. Someone may have the knack of tightening the threads more and someone may loosen them more, or they make a slight change and change the design and pattern. ”

Inspiration

The story of how Nahui by GM was born is a story of love and unimaginable coincidences. Let's begin by explaining the origin of the name, as it is the inspiration of the CEO's great-great-aunt, nothing more and nothing less than Carmen Mondragón, a poet, painter, and passionate woman who lived to the fullest every day of her life. She was nicknamed Nahui Olin by her boyfriend, Doctor Atl. "When the time came to name the brand, my friends told me Grecia that name has always been with you, why don't you use it? It has a family history and it is also in Nahuatl," said Grecia Mondragón.

“One day I woke up and said: I want to make hats. I don't know how it got there, but it did come”. In this way, Grecia Mondragón decided to start with Nahui by GM because after she worked in collaboration with a hotel in Zacatlán de las Manzanas, Puebla, and having returned from a season in Europe, she decided to contact to an artisan from the region to place the first order. But not everything was going smoothly, because unfortunately, the craftsman did not comply with the agreement they had and had not covered the total number of pieces that Grecia had requested. Very sad, the CEO of Nahui by GM decided to go to a cafe very close to where she had the meeting. Just then, the craftsman's grandson came to tell him that his mother could make the order that she wanted, Grecia accepted, and since then, Lourdes became the chief craftswoman.

Overall impact

---

Nahui by GM proudly employs mostly single mothers and elderly women from the state of Puebla and Veracruz, as well as Jipijapa palm weaving artisans and weaving families from Tlaxcala.

Grecia Mondragón also commented that she tries to raise the salaries of artisans every time the company grows economically since artisanal jobs are the lowest paid in the country, and she wants to make that difference because in every purchase that customers make is a percentage for the artisans and the other people behind Nahui by GM.

Business benefit

---

Beyond the economic benefits that Nahui by GM enjoys, for the CEO, what is truly enriching for her company is knowing that customers trust their company to place orders and payments. In the same way, they constantly receive messages on social networks from customers sending their photos using Nahui by GM accessories. "For me, it is very nice when my clients send me their photos and want to replicate them, I know that this is not as important as saying I sold a thousand hats, but for me, it is very special that the brand alone took this shape and this personality."

Nahui by GM's goals for the future is truly challenging, as Grecia Mondragón wants to work with a community from each state in the country, as well as sell outside of Mexico and in department stores that share the Nahui by GM concept.

Social and environmental benefit

For Grecia Mondragón, the most important thing is to value the work of the artisans who work with her making the hats and accessories that it has to offer at Nahui by GM. During the interview, she stressed that "collaborations" with people who have a large number of followers on social networks, she prefers not to do them, and she does it for a simple reason: it is not only her work that is involved in the preparation and sale of their products.

Employing people from marginalized communities generates a positive change in society since it not only reduces inequalities and poverty, but also it creates a consciousness to her clients that all work has a monetary value, and that it should not be undervalued. It is important to highlight that each of Nahui by GM products is unique and unrepeatable, which adds even more commercial value.
