Summary

Turkish Airlines is a global company, as well as a company that is aware of the beauty of its world. In this regard, it does not forget that it has an environmentally friendly and sustainable business approach when using the most important fuels in the World. That's why THY is creating a new project: MICROJET A PLEASURE. It has started pilot production of synthetic bio-kerosene using hydrothermal fatty acids (HEFA) and hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) methods from microalgae within the scope of the project it is affiliated with. In 2022, biofuels produced from completely sustainable sources and whose engine tests have been completed by Türk Teknik AS will be blended and used in their flights. Thus, Turkish Airlines will become one of the rare global companies that can produce and use the cleanest type of biofuel accepted by IATA. Therefore, the scope of the project, pilot production of synthetic bio-kerosene using hydrotreated fatty acids (HEFA) and hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) methods from microalgae started. In 2022, biofuel, which is produced entirely from sustainable sources and whose engine tests have been completed by Turkish Teknik AŞ, will be blended and used in our flights. Thus, Turkish Airlines will be one of the rare global companies that can produce and use the cleanest type of biofuel accepted by IATA.

Innovation

The Tübitak project titled "Microalgae Based Sustainable Bio-Jet Fuel Project (MICRO-JET)", which THY applied in partnership with Boğaziçi University was accepted. Within the scope of this project, they adopt a more environmentally friendly fuel approach by reducing the use of fuels that have a great impact on the environment. The biofuel project, which will be used for the first time this year, is planned by THY to be registered as the fuel that has been approved by IATA and is the least harmful to the environment.

By using hydrotreated fatty acids (HEFA) from microalgae and hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) methods, this fuel will reduce the amount of carbon dioxide absorption by fifty percent, and the damage to the air and nature during the flight will be reduced by almost half. Considering only the day-to-day flights, this will greatly benefit nature and minimize air damage under current conditions.

The benefit of the initiative, which can be accepted by the UN, is to integrate a nature-friendly initiative into our lives. As we mentioned above. By minimizing the rate of carbon monoxide emissions released into the air, they prevent the air and nature from being damaged to a large extent. In this way, they protect the livable environment and breathable air to a great extent, and they are taking precautions for the future with the best we have for now.

Inspiration

During our meeting with Berkant Çolak, the Cabin Chief of Turkish Airlines, we learned that the biggest inspiration is that Turkish Airlines knows that it is a sustainable business as well as a profit-generating company. This company, which has achieved great global success, wanted to solve these problems by realizing that it was unintentionally damaging the environment while promoting its name to the whole world with its flights. According to Mr. Çolak, the biggest and most beneficial project of Turkish Airlines. In this project, unlike the harmful fuel used by ordinary aircraft, a new fuel is produced and this fuel is an extremely environmentally friendly product that does not harm the environment. Moreover, thanks to this fuel, the supply of other used fuels have started to decrease and continues to be used in almost all aircraft. According to the information conveyed to Berkant Çolak and other Cabin Supervisors, the biggest goal of the Micro-jet project is to be used in all aircraft starting from 2025. At this very point, Berkant Çolak adds: “Due to the current studies and the interest shown, this target will not be extended until 2050 and all our planes will fly the whole world with our new fuel in a shorter time.” We laughed and said that we would tell this good news to all our readers. In summary, Turkish Airlines will continue to move forward very confidently and decisively in this innovation change and will leave a green environment to the whole world globally.

Overall impact

Although this project of THY was accepted by important institutions and organizations, this year; It will be used for the first time in 2022. For this reason, it is not possible to observe any changes or compare air cleanliness. Because such great changes occur over the years and bear fruit. The closest measurement will be made in 2050 and the change will be observed. However, the expected impact is likely to be positive because it is a large and tested, and approved project. However, any definite claim in this project, which is currently in the testing phase, misleads individuals and institutions. We cannot say that no one can sink the Titanic.

Business benefit

Biofuel is of animal and vegetable origin and is tax-exempt in many countries. For this reason, taxes are lower. However, although its tax is low since it is a difficult fuel to store and protect, storage and preservation are provided with the money increased from taxation, and the budget balances itself in a way. The reason for this is; Biofuel, which has a content that can easily dissolve a tank material where normal fuels are stored, needs a special tank. As I said, with the money increased from tax, the company did not experience much difficulty at this point and they caught the money balance.

Social and environmental benefit

As we have already mentioned, it significantly reduces and protects from air and nature damage. So it's a nature-friendly project. But it destroys the air that people will breathe less for long periods of time, and increases the human life process and the earth's age, prolonging the cycle.
