Innovation

After careful curation and interactions with social enterprises and organizations working with local artisans, natural produce, socially deprived communities, and helping drive attention to legitimate causes, an array of ethically sourced and produced offerings are being made available on the platform. Decent Work and Economic Growth, Sustainable Cities and Communities, and Responsible Consumption and Production are the three key SDGs being focused on.

Looking at the World Through the Lens of Sustainability

Inspiration

Pallavi Srivastava, the founder of Our Better Planet, earned her master's degree from the Goa Institute of Management in 2005. She moved to the United States for a job after working in India for a few years. She learned more about the concept of sustainability while living there, and she was pleased by the people's knowledge of the matter. When she moved to India, she immediately noticed the change. Even in a tier-one city like Bengaluru, the concept of sustainable products was still in its infancy. Furthermore, the founder was concerned about what was put into her child's meals and other products. She started wandering in the streets of Bengaluru in search of eco-friendly, chemical-free, and natural products. She was able to locate many vendors selling different products like eco-friendly brushes, clothes made of jute and etc. But the market was very niche and scattered. All these were the inspiration for the project.

Overall impact

Our Better Planet describes itself as a platform that connects the consumer with the creator. When a customer shops with them, they may choose among handcrafted, ethically constructed products made using environmentally friendly materials. The goal is to make purchases more thoughtful and meaningful, while also fostering pride in possessing a one-of-a-kind item. Each piece is crafted in accordance with fair trade principles, resulting in a sustainable income and giving back to the individuals who created it. Our Better Planet has been able to make a mark in around 2 years of its inception. Starting with a few vendors, the company has been able to partner with 200+ vendors who can sell their sustainable products on the platform, ourbetterplanet.com.

Business benefit

Our Better Planet has been able to make a mark in around 2 years of its inception. Starting with a few vendors, the company has been able to partner with 200+ vendors who can sell their sustainable products on the platform, ourbetterplanet.com. The organization decided to organize a live case study for over 6000 MBA students with the support of YUGMA. For a research project, nearly six teams were shortlisted.

The research assisted them in determining the demographics of the Target Age group. This allowed them to recognize the significant level of interest in sustainable products and concepts among Millennials, as well as a number of other important results. This also aided them in developing a marketing strategy. They also realized that raising people's awareness was critical to achieving long-term change. For its initial cash, the company went with seed funding. Investments are few because investors are new to this area and have little expertise in sustainability issues. The company successfully raised USD 300K as the seed capital from VANS Investment in June 2021.

Social and environmental benefit

OurBetterPlanet is currently providing a venue for people who are concerned about the need for sustainability and their part in making a difference to come together. OurBetterPlanet describes itself as a platform that connects the consumer with the creator; when you shop with them, you can choose among handcrafted, ethically constructed products made with environmentally friendly materials. The goal is to make your purchases more thoughtful and meaningful, as well as to develop a sense of pride in possessing a one-of-a-kind item. Each piece is crafted in accordance with fair trade principles, resulting in a sustainable income and a return to the people who created it. They're also prepared to take the next step. That is, they want to include more people in their community. They want to do so by engaging in a variety of community-building activities. The first of its sort is set to take place in Goa. They also intend to convert their stores into experience centers where customers may be taken on a trip through their items. Aside from that, they intend to hold various research and development workshops in order to pave the way for more advancements in their sector. On a personal level, they are also preparing to take the next step, which is to establish their own product line rather than simply serving as a platform for exchange. They also have ideas for environmentally friendly packaging. Their overall goal is to lessen a product's detrimental influence on the environment.
