Summary

As the founder of Blueboots Farm sees it, vertical integration of the whole system, starting from planting to marketing and selling, has helped Blueboots Farm create ways to eliminate the middleman between Indonesian local farmers and consumers. It ensures that production is effective and efficient with zero waste through surveys and calculation of demand. Blueboots Farm is also constantly educating all the stakeholders about the great potential of farming by proving that one can support oneself by growing their own produce.

Innovation

The basic notion of this innovation is to cut the middleman to speed up the process from planting to consumption, to increase effectivity and efficiency of the production, and to manage people, planet and profit in order to achieve sustainability.

Blueboots Farm does this by putting the process line into a vertical line and integrating one division to another so that everything can go simultaneously. Blueboots Farm starts by carrying out surveys and research on supply and demand, as well as what is available to utilize and needs to be added within the radius of Blueboots Farm. The result becomes the guideline for Blueboots Farm to start directing farmers for production including providing seeds, fertilizers, and tools, if necessary.. At the same time, Blueboots Farm encourages the marketing activities about the produce as it comes to harvest. Blueboots Farm supports the process through packaging, selling and making the customer satisfied with the product.

Inspiration

Blueboots Farm was found in 2015 by Samantha Gunawan who is passionate about organic foods. Her first encounter with farming happened when she went to Nafi’s Farm at Cisarua, Bogor. After her first time seeing, touching, smelling and tasting the plants right off the ground, she was hooked with curiosity and passion to learn more about farming. Gunawan was also inspired by Helianti Hilman, the founder of Javara Indonesia which has been contributing greatly to exporting Indonesian indigenous food products.

Overall impact

Blueboots Farm has impacted over 50 Indonesian local farmers at Cijeruk, Bogor. Today, these farmers have a good environment and community to plant and their produce can later be used for their own consumption or sale. This action improves the farmers’ standard of living and currently the company is working to provide farmers with good healthcare assistance. This has been an inspiration for the community to create a better lifestyle. In addition, they are also working together with farmers across Indonesia to supply other types of produce that are not planted at Blueboots Farm. Currently, Blueboots Farm is in the process of expanding into 11 hectares in a centralized area where the farming, processing and packaging can be done in the same space. This contributes to a large portion of application for employment for other farmers nearby. Other than that, Blueboots Farm also offers Open Farm Program where people can visit and learn firsthand about how to plant and grow produces.

Samantha Gunawan, the Founder of Blueboots Farm, is also impacting the consumers by becoming a speaker on workshops, conferences, talks, bazaars and events to promote what Blueboots Farm believes and doing.

Business benefit

With the benefit of getting their produces fresh from the farm, Blueboots Farm sells delicious and nutritious ready-to-eat products ranging from organic chips to organic crunchy peanut butter. These products are sold at their website, various Indonesian e-commerce, and several local organic shops in Jakarta. Currently, Blueboots Farm is planning to export their produces soon. Alongside the products, Blueboots Farm Open Farm Programs for people to come and visit the farm to learn about sustainable living, planting, harvesting and consuming whole, fresh foods straight from the plant.

Social and environmental benefit

With the Vertical Integration system, Blueboots Farm helps the local farmers to escape the middle man which drastically contribute to the cash flow for the stakeholders, mainly the farmers which fairly improves their standard of living. This innovation also better the system for detecting what the society and environment needed for their growth while still obtaining profit for the company.
