Summary

The construction industry represents 13% of the world's GDP, now given this size there are also significant environmental impacts as the construction sector generates between 25% and 40% of the world's total carbon emissions . Similarly, it accounts for 23% of a city's single-use plastic waste consumption. It is estimated that 300 metric tons of plastic are produced annually in the world, of which 50% is single-use plastic, which means that the industry is responsible for an average of 35 metric tons of plastic worldwide.

For Ana Maria Montoya Arango CFO of Glasst, the company found the opportunity to develop a portfolio of new materials with better performance for the industry. This is how Glasst developed the universal protector, a biodegradable, oxodegradable and compostable product that replaces single-use plastic films and generates greater performance for builders without affecting the environment. Glasst also developed more resistant biodegradable concrete release agents for the market, generating a product that is environmentally friendly and non-toxic for people.

Innovation

Glasst developed two innovative products, the first is called Universal Protector which is a liquid product, elastomer type Biodegradable, Oxodegradable and Compostable thus meeting the criteria for LEED and EDGE certification. This product dries to an easily removable film. This product protects porous and non-porous surfaces of various objects against stains, scratches, light bumps, transportation, contact with chemicals, welding sparks, among others, efficiently replaces the polluting single-use blue plastic. Not suitable for textiles.

The second product is concrete release agent, which is an emulsified liquid product that forms a non-stick film between the concrete and the formwork material. Used in the concrete casting process in civil works, it prevents the adherence of the concrete to the forms, allowing the surfaces to be smooth, uniform and clean. This product is designed in two presentations that offer different advantages: High viscosity release agents that present good resistance to evaporation and rain, chemically designed to be anchored to the formwork reducing waste by gravitation, do not change the color of the final concrete, the product comes ready to use and does not need any dilution.

Inspiration

Working in Matisses, a family business dedicated to furniture and decoration in the city of Medellin (Colombia), Juan Camilo Botero required precise solutions to a problem they had in the company and was that the imported dining rooms arrived with scratched glass. He then began to look for solutions in different countries, where he found the way to solve the problem he had and he was also concerned that this product should not only be useful in the furniture sector, but also in others and that is where he contacted a friend in the construction sector and discovered that there was also the same difficulty with scratched glass, so he began to offer these products in Colombia where the construction companies did not need to change the scratched glass, but with the product that Juan Camilo offered the problem was solved and they were fixed. This was the beginning of what would become in 2011: Glasst.

While the business began to grow, it was still not a highly profitable business where at various times frustrations were generated presented in the entrepreneurial path prepared Juan Camilo to face and in 2017 competition comes out where he makes a similar product with specifications that were not of high quality but fulfilled its purpose, so Juan Camilo decides: "kill his cow" and get out of the comfort zone, where he starts working with chemical engineers in search of developing a new product that resists all the "blows" of construction, leaving aside the blue plastic that we normally know and that covers the glasses.

But this was not enough, Juan Camilo wanted to improve his product, creating a liquid that becomes a protective film and then removed without damaging the surface and is also biodegradable. He was concerned about the need for a product that would effectively replace single-use plastic films, which are highly polluting.

==============================================================
