Innovation

There are two million people without access to electricity in Mexico as of today, an alarming figure, considering that in the majority of the world a technological revolution is taking place. That is why Manuel Wiechers, CEO and Founder of the company Iluméxico, wanted to cover a problem that has been unattended. Wiechers says: “Something we take for granted, just switching on a light, is something these families don’t have”. Iluméxico creates components that run on solar power for connecting spotlights, electrical wires and USB ports for charging cellphones. These components are adapted to each household’s needs. All this is possible thanks to previously doing a route of the communities that are not electrified, later surveys are applied and customized visits to communities are made to analyze what is needed and how much capacity requires each location. Iuméxico’s team, or the Iluméxico family as they call themselves, is constantly working from different departments to create the final product. Then the company installs the component in the house, ending with lighting on the switch for the first time, done by the family. Depending on the equipment or system to be installed, it can be small systems 25 watt battery and 18 amperes that weigh 5 kg, as can also be panels of 325 watts where the entire system weighs more than 200 kg.

Iluméxico has regional offices in 14 cities around Mexico called Ilucentros, and these can function as accessories shops, customer service centers for families, and / or offices mainly, and through these centers is where people can get technical support or answer any questions they have about their installed system. Currently, Iluméxico is the largest off-grid company in Mexico by capacity, therefore giving thousands of families something as basic as light. As Diego Márquez, Commercial Director of Iluméxico, says: "often these families lack even basic services: no water, no sanitation, the living conditions are very poor". Additionally, Iluméxico works in many indigenous communities in México. The portion of the population it helps is considered the bottom of the socioeconomical pyramid, and they're living with close to hundred dollars a month for the whole family, which is near a dollar a person, and that's comparable to remote communities in Africa and Asia and others, Wiechers says. That is why Iluméxico is currently changing this for the better, not only to improve their lives, but also to help the environment by using renewable energies, including flexible payment options that meets every family’s needs. As Wiechers mentions, “we'd assign different payment option for these families. You can pay either monthly every two months every six months or every year even and that way we can adapt to their financing needs”.

Inspiration

Manuel Wiechers aimed to combat energy poverty in Mexico. When Iluméxico was founded there were approximately three million Mexicans without access to electricity, people in very remote areas , "usually families who were at the bottom of the socioeconomic pyramid, low-income families who are in areas very far away from cities or suburban areas, and really no companies that were helping this sector", says Diego Márquez. Wiechers and a group of engineers at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) saw this huge need; a large sector of Mexican society did not receive any support, and thus they decided to put their grain of sand. It all began as a social project and not as a business for profit but, gradually, over the years, Iluméxico has been a social company that’s aware of the people’s electrical needs, and saving the environment at the same time.

Both Wiechers and Marquez, share that one of the greatest satisfactions and a source of passion to keep doing what Iluméxico does is to see the happiness on the faces of every person who witnesses their lighted house for the first time, or watch TV at their home, or a child who can read a book at night without pollution of wood smoke or having candles in their homes all night, avoiding fire accidents or respiratory damage from burning wood. In the end, their greatest inspiration is being able to see the growth and well-being of Mexican families that didn’t have these services before. Diego Márquez tells it this way: "I think there have been countless success stories. In Iluméxico, we’ve been witnesses of the development of thousands of Mexican families, which brings about many emotions, even hugs or tears from people who had been living their entire lives without light. It's those stories that really fill us with the desire to continue this project." Every word, every hug, every smile is a push to continue working to make this a better world. Manuel Wiechers says he had a commitment to his country and with these people who are in great need: “I had this commitment. I knew that I had more opportunities than the average Mexican. So I knew I had to give back, so going to this community was amazing, but also it helped really to understand what we were going to do". Dedication has been and remains present until today.

Overall impact

"The projects Iluméxico works on tend to be in extremely remote areas with difficult access. To reach the communities might mean to drive many hours on the highway, but also walking another additional hours or even crossing lagoons by boat. This implies that many of the areas are a high danger zone, be it because of geographical or social reasons, like being in an area where cartels and drug trafficking is high". This is how Diego Márquez describes the depth of what is being done in Iluméxico. They work in areas that, besides being remote, are also full of danger in many ways. However, knowing that the help given makes a difference is more than enough: "Everyone in Iluméxico feel it and live it, we are illuminating 15,000 families, 1,500 systems installed in more than 1,600 communities today".

Iluméxico’s vision for 2025 is to touch a million families, reaching them not only through renewable energy services, but with other basic services that fill the needs and desires of the people within the community. And the ultimate goal is to completely eradicate energy poverty". There are 1.2 billion people today who live without electricity around the world, and two million of them are Mexicans," says Manuel Wiechers. Through renewable electricity services is possible to be a catalyst for growth in areas such as education, health, basic services, entrepreneurship, and others. "Energy becomes a catalyst for the growth of the community," says Diego Márquez. Iluméxico helps combat energy poverty not only by giving electricity to households without access to it, it also helps not to pollute the environment by using components based on solar energy. Furthermore, it promotes the economic development of the community by providing a service that brings them greater opportunities in order to continue studying, use technology and so on. Wiechers says so: “it's really not about providing aid or help. I think it's about providing tools for people who want to grow".

Diego Márquez remembers thus the impact of Iluméxico: "being able to see a community that you helped to illuminate, and every home has a safe and quality lighting, that's something immensely rewarding. To witness within the family how they marvel at the light, or a child who can turn on the TV or read a book after dark".

Business benefit

Iluméxico knows how important it is to support communities without electricity, and also knows how vital it is to be in contact with people with whom it collaborates every day. That is why the company takes very seriously preparing people working within the company, in addition to teaching families that are helped. Iluméxico teaches them step by step how to install each component and how it works; this creates a learning network involving all participants in the process, from the moment the company visits the houses until having the final product up and running. Forming different partnerships with different companies involved in improving electric power, a support network is created in order to continue to assist families in need of electricity. In addition to this, the company has worked with other projects to improve the outlook for electricity in Mexico, for example, Manuel Wiechers says that “we're growing as a company. We're getting more and more installations on our own. But also, we've always thought that [other institutions] can be a catalyst for this kind of work and access to basic services. So, even though our business model is designed to be market-based, the energy reform in Mexico designed a new fund which is basically aimed to align to our vision: that every Mexican lives with electricity.” And so, this company helps the electricity business, by working together with other institutions, always with the same goal of ending electric poverty.

It is thanks to this that Iluméxico has won several awards around the world, besides also creating Ilucentros, which are the ones that maintain the connection between the company and the families alive. They are a Certified B Corp and GIIRS Impact Rated, positioning the company as an institution responsible towards society and the environment. Its presence in Mexico is growing stronger, with 14 Ilucentros in Chihuahua, Nuevo León, Durango, Nayarit, San Luis Potosí, Oaxaca, Guerrero, Chiapas and Campeche.

Social and environmental benefit

One of the main benefits Iluméxico brings is that families living in poverty can substitute lighting sources that are harmful to one’s health, such as lighting candles or firewood; instead of constantly inhaling smoke or having lit candles that can potentially burn down the house in an accident, the people can now be safer and healthier at their own home. In other words, "families replace their light sources for a sustainable source that does not generate neither health risks nor an impact on the environment", as Diego Márquez says. By living off firewood, the families depend on the chopping of trees to keep themselves warm, to cook and to light the house up, thus giving them a source of renewable lighting based on solar radiation means there is less dependence on natural resources, such as forests.

By having a house electrified and, therefore, being able to connect appliances such as a TV or cellphone, means there is now a connection to the outside world, and all this without having to walk two or three hours to the public buildings, which are often the only place with electricity in the area, to charge a cell. There is also the improvement in eating habits. With no electricity, foods are limited to things not dependent on cooling; Diego Marquez emphasizes that "giving them the possibility of having a refrigerated food helps to improve their quality of life because they can now preserve food, helping also in diversifying their diet since the food itself will last longer, creating a fundamental change in the family diet. " Health is also extremely important for the company. They can light up a health center and thus provide services 24 hours a day, or they can have access to drugs that require refrigeration, or, as it was mentioned before, not having to inhale noxious fumes, which is paramount in changing people’s health for the better. Regarding education, Iluméxico believes that by giving a school or community center electricity makes community activities thrive, including the educational aspect like classes, since they now have more hours of light available and not limited only to natural light; "students can go to school not only in the morning but can also have evening sessions," Diego Márquez mentions. Another important impact is that having access to energy, there is the possibility that a person can have a micro business. Iluméxico has also installed cooling systems connected to a solar panel, which gives the opportunity to a member of the community to have cool products, and therefore, can increase their income. “We have seen how through this, Iluméxico has helped the families grow so that they can have a micro business", Diego Márquez says.

Wiechers tells a story that illustrates very well the impact the company has had in people: "We were in Oaxaca and there was a woman, a single mother, who immediately expressed interest in the systems installed, and usually women are not involved. But she helped us install and even helped us convince some of the other families because she spoke the local language of the area. So she started getting involved and we named her the Community Ambassador. And for three or four months, she started helping us with the payments collection from families in her community, and we figured she had a good profile by being very proactive. So we offered a formal job. She is still with us three or four years later." What else is there to say?
